Lilly Singh’s success on YouTube has allowed her to become a multi-platform star, and she has now landed her most notable acting role to date. Singh, who makes YouTube videos on her iiSuperwomanii channel, has been cast in an upcoming film adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s classic novel Fahrenheit 451.
The film, which is being produced by HBO, will retell Bradbury’s tale of a dystopian world in which book burning and censorship have become commonplace. Singh’s character, who does not appear in the original text, will be a vlogger who serves as a propaganda peddler by offering live streams of book burnings. That description tells us that HBO’s adaptation will take place in the modern day (or, perhaps, the future) and that Singh won’t have to stray too far outside of her comfort zone to inhabit the character for which she has been cast.

One of YouTube's most beloved stars, Lilly ‘Superwoman’ Singh, is getting ready to hit the road again.
Following her massively successful A Trip To Unicorn Island Tour (#AT2UI), which she kicked off in 2015, and which became the focus of a YouTube Red documentary of the same name, Singh -- who counts more than 13 million subscribers across two YouTube channels -- is set to embark on yet another global escapade, this time in support of her forthcoming self-help book, How To Be A Bawse: A Guide To Conquering Life.
Launching in New York on March 27, the day before the book is slated to drop, Singh's so-called #BawseBook Tour will conclude on May 24 in Singapore. Singh will hit a slew of different countries in between -- everywhere from Canada to India to Trinidad & Tobago to Australia to the U.K. The tour will not only consist of signings, Singh wrote on YouTube,...

YouTube Red has unleashed its latest documentary about the life of an online video star. The platform that hosted A Trip To Unicorn Island and The Amazing Tour Is Not On Fire is now the home of This Is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous, an intimate look at the life of the titular beauty content creator.
This Is Everything, from veteran documentarian Barbara Kopple, uses a combination of YouTube clips, interviews, home videos, and new footage to tell the story of its subject, who first gained fame under the name Gregory Gorgeous before coming out as a transgender woman in 2014. The film examines how Gigi’s gender transition has affected her relationships with her family and the YouTube audience at large.
While some documentaries about YouTube stars have been criticized for serving as easily-digestible fluff, This Is Everything has been commended for painting a fuller portrait of its central figure, with outlets...

Lilly 'Superwoman' Singh unveiled her A Trip To Unicorn Island documentary exclusively on YouTube Red earlier this year, but since that service is only available in the United States, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand thus far, Singh is set to expand distribution of the feature film worldwide through a just-inked deal with Gunpowder & Sky.
The indie studio, which recently launched a sales and distribution arm called Gunpowder & Sky Distribution following its acquisition of FilmBuff, has acquired the worldwide rights to Unicorn Island, which was produced by Astronauts Wanted. And beginning today, Gunpowder & Sky Distribution will make the film available globally on VOD platforms like Amazon Video, iTunes, Microsoft Movies & TV, Sony PlayStation, and Vudu.

YouTube has remained rather mum on the success of YouTube Red thus far. But during her keynote address at VidCon this evening, CEO Susan Wojcicki offered a glimpse into the success of the initiative. Wojcicki said that more than half of all watch time for Red is taking place on mobile devices -- suggesting the social buzz surrounding its original programming is loud. A Trip to Unicorn Island earned more Twitter impressions when it premiered, YouTube says, than Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, House of Cards, and True Detective.
Wojcicki also noted that Scare PewDiePie, a reality series featuring YouTube’s most-subscribed star, boasted audiences that rival the top shows on cable. To this end, Scare PewDiePie is one of three series being renewed for a second season. YouTube is also bringing back Foursome -- AwesomenessTV’s high school dating drama starring Jenn McAllister, as well as an as-yet-untitled movie with Smosh...

Creator Lilly Singh isn’t even a beauty guru, but the bold-faced vlogger -- and star of the YouTube Red documentary A Trip To Unicorn Island -- just inked her very first cosmetics deal.
In collaboration with the 20-year-old Smashbox beauty brand, Singh, who goes by the Superwoman moniker on YouTube, is getting her very own lipstick shade fittingly dubbed Bawse. This is a term -- slang for ‘boss’ -- that Singh uses frequently in her vlogs, and encapsulates her own “indomitable, self-assured spirit,” according to Smashbox.
“At Smashbox Studios, we are always thinking outside of the box,” said founder and famed photographer Davis Factor in a statement. “When we started talking to Lilly Singh, about how she turns heads, reaches goals, and empowers her 8 million subscribers, we knew we had to collaborate.”

Digital platforms are not shy when it comes to advertising their original programs. Finding those shows, however, is a trickier proposition -- and it’s not always easy.
On February 10th, several months after its launch, YouTube Red launched its first pieces of original content. The subscription service, which costs $9.99 per month, is now home to four original programs -- Scare PewDiePie, A Trip To Unicorn Island, Lazer Team, and Dance Camp -- and will host at least six more over the next few months.
YouTube’s Red originals are led by some of its most prominent creators, and in the days leading up to February 10th, those creators embarked on a promotional blitz. Unicorn Island star Lilly Singh, for example, appeared on several TV programs, as did Scare PewDiePie’s Felix Kjellberg. Those public appearances worked in tandem with digital advertisements. “Our video ad campaigns across the web expose...

While it’s still too early to tell how YouTube Red’s first fleet of original programs have fared in terms of viewership, the social media hullabaloo generated by vlogger Lilly Singh’s A Trip To Unicorn Island documentary seems to bode incredibly well for the initiative.
On Wednesday, the date of the film’s launch, A Trip To Unicorn Island generated more than 601 million impressions on social media, according to data culled by Astronauts Wanted, which produced the film. (These impressions do not refer to Singh herself; just the movie.) In terms of engagement -- meaning likes, Retweets, comments and more -- Island generated 3.7 million impressions, said Astronaut’s vice president of social and transmedia, Megan Westerby.
The team purposefully kept the hashtag (#AT2UI) consistent across all platforms since the project’s announcement last April. All told, Westerby says, the film has received 2.5 billion social impressions, which peaked...

On February 10th, production company Astronauts Wanted released A Trip To Unicorn Island (AT2UI), a documentary about online video star Lilly Singh, on the brand new YouTube Red platform. AT2UI follows Singh on a recent tour, and it provides a look inside her life, her work, and her relationships with friends, family, and fans.
Singh has toured late-night TV to promote the new documentary, and by including it as one of its first Red originals, YouTube clearly has big goals for AT2UI as well. But what exactly are those goals, and how with the film achieve them?
To answer those questions, we spoke to Scott Winn, best known as the man behind the ScottDW YouTube channel. Winn directed AT2UI, and he has a very clear vision for what he hopes the film can accomplish. Here are his thoughts:

YouTube Red has launched its first four original programs, and it will not slow down its output. The $10-per-month subscription service launched last October by YouTube is now home to films and web series led by digital stars Lilly Singh, Rooster Teeth, Meg DeAngelis, and PewDiePie. It has also announced its upcoming slate of original programs, which includes newly-revealed shows from Gigi Gorgeous and AwesomenessTV.
The program included in YouTube Red’s initial lineup are A Trip To Unicorn Island, a documentary that follows Lilly “iiSuperwomanii” Singh during a recent tour; Lazer Team, a film from Rooster Teeth that was funded via Indiegogo; Dance Camp, an AwesomenessTV production starring Meg DeAngelis; and Scare PewDiePie, a series that puts the world’s most popular YouTube star into real-life horror scenarios. Viewers with YouTube Red subscriptions will be the first ones to experience these shows, but some of them will ultimately run on other platforms.
