- Cosimo convinces the Signoria to spare Albizzi's grateful widow confiscation, but rumors that he arranged for Rinaldo and his son's murder by mercenaries are take seriously by all, even his family, so pope Eugene decides to leave his 'tainted' home. Pietro grudgingly helps arrange to have Runaldo's seat take not by him but lowly merchant Bredani, who is later murdered so Pazzi, the heir of the Albizzi faction, can sneakily arrange his own election. Seeing Cosimo haunted by Rinaldo's last sneer he caused his own father's death, Marco Bello hints to know otherwise and is forced to produce his theory, the dagger that killed the apothecary. Cosimo confines his suspect brother Lorenzo, whose protestations are believed by everyone else, and ends up believing him it must be a ploy from Marco after seeing him make out with Maddalena, whose presence may be the last straw for Contessina's tolerance of his sanctimonious ingratitude.—KGF Vissers

Meanwhile, Cosimo spends less and less time with Maddalena, who instead develops a rapport with Marco Bello. The latter at last decides to share with his master his suspicions regarding Lorenzo, and when Cosimo confronts his brother about his fathers murder, Lorenzo defends himself but Cosimo doesnt believe him. In the meantime, Albizzis wife accuses Cosimo of her husbands murder, which causes the Pope to leave Palazzo Medici and take up residence in a convent. Lucrezia, sure of Lorenzos innocence, helps him along with the accountant UGO and Piero to find evidence that seems to shift suspicion about Giovannis death to someone else...
