Futurama is one of the best animated series of all time.
And you know what?
No matter how terrible this season or future seasons may be, nothing changes that.
(Hulu Trailer/Screenshot)
When the show debuted in 1999, its lobster claw was on the pulse of wisecracking liberal escapism. The natural evolution of The Simpsons, Futurama represented the best of Gen X and millennial humor.
It surpassed The Simpsons in many ways because it could delve deeper into surrealism and even apocalyptic (but funny) scenarios. There was no “net” of a nuclear family to fall back on.
This was the world, the unbridled imagination of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, and the possibilities were endless.

According to Futurama creator Matt Groening, a decade off the air was a welcome break for the series — after all, look how much better Fry’s life got when he took that thousand-year sabbatical.
Late last month, Futurama Season 12 opened with a not-so-timely takedown of Non-Fungible Tokens that confusingly included a solid seven minutes of expository dialogue describing the principles of cryptology behind 2021’s hottest get-rich-quick scheme. The fan backlash to “The One Amigo” and criticisms of the outdated topical humor provoked an irate reaction from Futurama star and Bender voice-actor John Dimaggio, who told the naysayers to “bite my shiny metal ass!” if they don’t like the pop-culture jokes in the new episodes. Still, some Futurama fans continue to questioning whether or not the series has enough novel ideas left for the next two and a half seasons of its Hulu deal.

After taking on the tragic tale of the people’s princess, Elizabeth Debicki found just the part to shake things up.
The Golden Globe winner opened up about going from her critically-acclaimed performance on Netflix‘s The Crown to starring in MaXXXine, the concluding chapter of Ti West‘s X horror trilogy that is now playing in theaters.
“I shot this quite soon after wrapping on The Crown and I found it to be a very medicinal palate cleanser,” Debicki told Forbes.
She previously won a Golden Globe for her performance as the late Princess of Wales in seasons 5 and 6 of The Crown after taking over the role from Emma Corrin.
In MaXXXine, Debicki plays director Elizabeth Bender, who gives Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) her big break in the horror sequel The Puritan II. While fulfilling her dreams, the young starlet must outrun her sinister past while the Night Stalker preys on 1980s Los Angeles.

When we last saw Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) in Ti West’s X, the adult film actress with Machiavellian designs on Hollywood superstardom had just killed Pearl (also Goth), the deranged, elderly killer of all her friends. In MaXXXine, she’s pushing 33 and still grinding in the dregs of the adult entertainment world in L.A., but her savvy agent, Teddy Night (Giancarlo Esposito), snags her a supporting role in a buzzy new slasher film, The Puritan II, to be directed by the Dorothy Arzner-esque star screenwriter Elizabeth Bender (Elizabeth Debicki).
No spotlight in Hollywood, though, is bright enough to eradicate the grime of Maxine’s past. Following the template set by another icon of the industry’s infancy, Joan Crawford, our heroine’s dirty secrets become weaponized against her. A menacing stranger clad in taut, rippling leather (shades of Cruising) sics his goon (Kevin Bacon) on her, sends...

By the time Matt Groening began to develop "Futurama," his previous show, "The Simpsons," had already attained legendary status. As such, you might think his follow-up would have been treated with nothing but reverence and support. However, it seems Fox, who had been lampooned by "The Simpsons" on multiple occasions throughout its run, weren't all that excited for the debut of "Futurama." As "Futurama" voice actor Phil Lamarr, once put it during a panel:
"'The Simpsons' had basically launched the Fox network, so the executives at Fox at that time [that 'Futurama' launched] were not the people who launched the Fox network. So Matt Groening was way more important than them. They could not give him notes on 'The Simpsons,' but they could on 'Futurama.' 'Futurama' was his redheaded stepchild [mimicking a Fox exec] 'Oh, let's kick that one's a**. Yeah, we have some notes, Matt.'"

Days of Our Lives (Dool) spoilers note that in a drunken state, Leo Stark (Greg Rikaart) recently spilled the beans about Jude to Ej Dimera (Dan Feuerriegel), without knowing that the baby’s biological father is actually Eric Brady (Greg Vaughan).
When confronted by Sloan Petersen-Brady (Jessica Serfaty), Ej learned the truth and has decided to keep things hush-hush about Jude, especially in light of how close Eric and Nicole Dimera (Arianne Zucker) are getting now that they are working together at the Spectator.
But how far will Ej go to keep Leo quiet?

The alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) drinks a lot. And he doesn't seem to have much of a preference when it comes to his alcohol consumption. He will happily down classy cocktails, girly drinks like Fuzzy Navels, cheapo beers, or jugs of XXX rotgut moonshine. The alcohol gets him drunk but also keeps his fuel cells charged. Bender, as his name implies, is always a little tipsy. He only becomes erratic when he becomes sober. Although when drunk (i.e. in a normal state), Bender is hardly a model of poise; he's a kleptomaniac who has taken hostages on live TV more than once, all while waving around guns, smoking cigars, and encouraging viewers to beat their children.
Naturally, Bender is a lovable friend.
In what is likely a design flaw, all the robots in "Futurama" belch fire. When they need to expel dangerous exhaust, they simply burp it out of their mouths.

Bender Bending Rodrigeuz (John Dimaggio) is the most irreverent "Futurama" character by far, which makes the 2002 episode "Godfellas" such a compelling character piece.
At the episode's beginning, Bender is taking a nap in the Planet Express Ship's torpedo tube; during a battle with Space Pirates, he's shot into the void at light speed. Drifting through the cosmos alone, he's eventually hit by an asteroid home to diminutive "Shrimpkins." The aliens settle on his body and worship him as a god — he tries both an interventionist and abstaining approach to helping his subjects, but neither works. Soon, the faithful and atheistic Shrimpkins wipe each other out in a nuclear war.
Bender, alone again, comes across an omnipotent spiral nebula that communicates in binary code — Bender speculates this eternal entity may be God himself. They exchange notes on Godhood ("You [Bender] were doing well until everyone died") before "God" sends Bender back to...

It took a lot of writerly sci-fi calisthenics to get there, but the events of the 2008 "Futurama" movie "Bender's Game" take place largely in a Gygaxian world of wizards, knights, centaurs, and dragons. There are no hobbits, but hobos and rabbits are doing what they can to redress their absence.
It seems that the alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) was built without an imagination, a grievous deficiency indeed when he is asked to play "Dungeons & Dragons" with his 12-year-old friends Cubert (Kath Soucie) and Dwight (Bumper Robinson). Bender eventually comes around and invents a character named Titanius Anglesmith, Fancyman of Cornwood.
Sadly, playing D&d forces Bender's newly discovered imagination into overdrive, and he soon believes that he is Titanius Anglesmith. Like Don Quixote before him, Bender now sees himself as a brave knight errant, tilting at the high-tech windmills of the 31st century. He will eventually be committed...

"Futurama" is a show that is funny and sincere when it needs to be, with characters that have endured in the pop culture landscape for more than 20 years. The show survived several different cancelations only to come back again, and again, and again. But another key component of the show is that it also managed to be incredibly smart along the way. The writers and producers embraced math and science in a meaningful way well beyond what most any other comedic animated sci-fi show would. It's that dedication to science that actually helped them solve a pretty crucial problem.
In the series, space travel is made possible through the use of dark matter. It's a concept based on scientific theory, but our actual understanding of it as a species is minimal. The writers decided to employ dark matter as a fuel substance early on in the show's run. In the...

In the 31st-century setting of "Futurama," the holiday season has been altered somewhat. Christmas is now called Xmas, and traditional Christmas fir frees have been replaced by palm trees. Gift-giving is still a tradition and, as of the show's most recent episode, "I Know What You Did Next Xmas," so is the cooking of a holiday turducken. People still wait for Santa to arrive, but not for the usual reasons. It seems that in 2801, humanity decided to build an efficient, gift-distributing Santa Claus robot, capable of delivering many thousands of megagifts every second. Sadly, the Santa robot went rogue, punishing all children it deemed naughty ... to death. And, given Santa's ultra-stringent standards, he kills just about anyone on sight. Every Xmas, the citizens of the 31st century crouch in their armored homes, hidden from the evil Santa's missiles and explosives. Think Christmas via "The Purge."

When it was announced last year that Futurama would be returning after a 10-year hiatus for another season courtesy of Hulu, there was a little something missing. As it seemed, John Dimaggio would not be returning to voice Bender, one of the most important and beloved characters on Futurama, as the performer had told the studio to bite his shiny metal ass — well, in terms a little more appropriate for a human being. Thankfully, things worked out, with the bonus of Dimaggio making an impression along the way.
According to John Dimaggio, his decision to reprise Bender for the upcoming season of Futurama was a tough one due to negotiations related to money, telling Variety, “When they made the announcement, it wasn’t like I had said no. We had been negotiating for a long time…It was a stalemate.” He added, “I didn’t want, nor did my agent want,...

The “Futurama” revival at Hulu has set its premiere date.
The new episodes of the beloved sci-fi animated series, officially the show’s eighth season, will debut on Hulu on July 24. New episodes will drop weekly on Mondays thereafter, with Season 11 (or Season 8 depending on how you break it down) consisting of 10 episodes. Hulu commissioned 20 episodes in total back in February 2022. Hulu has also released the first teaser for the new season, which can be seen below.
This marks the second time the show has been brought back since it originally launched in 1999. After its initial four-season run on Fox, reruns of the show found new life as part of the Adult Swim lineup on Cartoon Network and on DVD. Four direct-to-video films were then produced, which were later re-edited into a fifth season that aired on Comedy Central starting in 2008. Comedy Central would go on to air two more...

John Cameron Mitchell was originally cast in John Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club,” but that incarnation of the movie never happened due to lack of funding, the actor told TheWrap.
The actor, best known for his role in the 2001 cult classic “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” plays a sinister step-uncle to Jemima Kirke and Nico Tortorella’s characters in the new Apple TV+ series “City on Fire.” He had the occasion to revisit his brush with the Brat Pack when he and Molly Ringwald, who played rich girl Claire Standish in the ’80s high school classic, were both on the same flight.

John Allen is furthering his commitment to families in need. Ballen Studios — the studio founded by a true crime storyteller with 7.3 million subscribers and 1.4 billion views on his MrBallen YouTube channel — has made a million-dollar pledge through the MrBallen Foundation.
The MrBallen Foundation will spread its seven-digit sum across two groups: families affected by violent crime and organizations that support victims and their families. Since its inception last year, the foundation has already donated over $400,000 through its Hope and Honor Grant Programs.
Families who receive the grants will use the funds to cover the immediate and emergency needs they encounter after being affected by a violent crime. Last December, the MrBallen Foundation awarded a grant to the family of Athena Strand, a seven-year-old girl from Texas who was kidnapped and murdered in November.

John Dimaggio and Hulu jointly announced March 1 that the original Bender voice actor would return for the show’s upcoming revival. Dimaggio’s involvement was in question after he originally refused to join the revival because he felt the cast was not being paid enough. If you assumed Dimaggio’s return meant he was able to get his desired pay raise, then you’d be wrong, according to the actor.
“People are like, ‘I’m so glad you got more money!’ I didn’t get more money,” Dimaggio recently revealed at Phoenix Fan Fusion (via /Film). “But what I did get was a lot of respect, and a lot of head nods from people who are like, ‘Yo bro, I see you and thank you.'”

"Futurama" has been canceled and revived so many times that by now it seems like the show's eventual return is almost a given. Fans of Futurama can breathe a sigh of relief.
John Dimaggio has officially joined the cast of the forthcoming Hulu revival, completing the cast ahead of production.
There was a great deal of skepticism when Hulu revealed the existence of the revival, and Dimaggio's name was missing.
At the time, it was reported that he felt the cast deserved a higher salary than they were offered.
The good news is that those issues appear to be ironed out to make way for the actor's return in the role of Bender.
“I’M Back, Baby! So damn grateful for the love and support of fans and colleagues alike during this whole time, and I cannot wait to get back to work with my Futurama family,” Dimaggio said in a statement, according to Variety.

So damn grateful for the love and support of fans and colleagues alike during this whole time, and I cannot wait to get back to work with my ‘Futurama’ family,” Dimaggio said in a statement, via Variety. “#Bendergate is officially over, so put it on the back of a shelf behind Xmas decorations, or maybe in that kitchen drawer with all of the other crap you put in there like old unusable crazy glue, or maybe even put it in a jar you save farts in.

In the 24 hours since Hulu announced it was bringing back David X. Cohen and Matt Groening’s animated sci-fi comedy series “Futurama,” original cast member John Dimaggio has used social media to champion the many fans who are upset over his potential recasting in the reboot. Dimaggio, who voiced Bender and several minor characters, is not currently attached to the project. As reported by Variety, the producers of the series are hopeful Dimaggio will return. An individual with knowledge of the project said a deal for Dimaggio’s return was still being worked out at the time of the reboot’s announcement. Should one not happen, Bender will be recast.
