Director Nigel Dick's original idea for this music video was to have Britney Spears walking on a giant vinyl record that was spinning on a turntable. Spears hated the idea, and suggested instead to have the video take place in a school to reflect the lives of her potential fans. Spears also wanted to incorporate dance scenes into the video. She later chose the schoolgirl outfit during a wardrobe fitting.
The song is composed in the key of C minor and is set in the time signature of 4/4 common time with a moderate tempo of 93 beats per minute (Andante moderato).
