On the morning of November 27, Kristy Woods called authorities to report her young daughter, Mariah, had vanished after she’d put her to bed the night before. Authorities issued an Amber Alert and began investigating the case, ultimately leading to the Friday arrest of Earl Kimrey, Kristy’s live-in boyfriend.
Last Saturday — five days after 3-year-old Mariah Woods was reported missing — her remains were found in a creek in Pender County, North Carolina.
Here are four things to know about the case.

A home invasion during the holidays takes a horrifying—and hilarious—turn in the official red band trailer for Better Watch Out, a film that references Home Alone and features innovative and painful traps that would likely please Kevin McCallister.
"This holiday season, you may be home, but you’re not alone... In this fresh and gleefully twisted spin on home-invasion horror, babysitter Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) must defend her young charges (Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould ) when intruders break into the house one snowy night – or so she thinks."
Written and directed by Chris Peckover from a story by Zack Kahn, Better Watch Out stars Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould, Olivia DeJonge, Dacre Montgomery, Virginia Madsen, and Patrick Warburton.
Well Go USA will release Better Watch Out in theaters and on VOD beginning October 6th. In case you missed it, read our own Heather Wixson's Fantasia review of the film, as...

Home invasion films are a great subgenre of the horror world, largely due to the fact that the premise is so simple. It’s a basic man-in-the-box plot — characters are confined to one, or mostly one, location and that’s where all the action takes. It’s a very easy idea to set up and pull off. The […]...

Home invasion tales are a well-worn narrative in the horror movie genre – but every once in a while, a film comes along that gives that tired scenario a shot in the arm. 2008’s The Strangers was one such project, with its story of relationship discord playing out as background to a terrifying encounter with masked intruders. A sequel has been in the works for a number of years, but is finally picking up momentum – as The Strangers 2 – with director Johannes Roberts at the helm.
The Strangers was notable for the way in which it specifically sought to leave the motivations of the attackers a mystery. Focusing on the perspective of the victims, the film was anchored by the idea that the target couple (played by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) would have no idea why they were being terrorised, and so the audience doesn’t either. Until now, The Strangers 2...

Few indie filmmakers today have broken the rules of Hollywood like Uruguay-born horror director Fede Alvarez. Rather than parlaying a low-budget first film into a job directing a franchise horror movie, Alvarez flipped the script, remaking “The Evil Dead” as his debut film before going on to direct an original horror feature. How did Alvarez land the “Evil Dead” job without any feature film credits to his name?

It took many different roles and countless wild animals, but James Wolk has finally made it past a critical hurdle: The second season of a network series. Home invasion thrillers have become so numerous over the past few years, they're pretty much their own genre now. It's easy to see why they work; they prey on our most basic fear of not even being safe inside our homes. Intruder, from director Travis Zariwny (here credited as Travis Z) is yet another entry in the genre, and even though it's nothing groundbreaking, it at least tries to break away a bit from formula. The victim this time around is Elizabeth (Louise Linton), a cello player spending some time alone and facing some big life decisions. She remains blissfully oblivious to the shadowy figure stalking her throughout her home, going through her books, raiding her fridge, and pissing in the sink, as most unwanted...

It’s been a pretty stellar year for horror so far, and not from the avenues you’d probably expect. Sure, The Conjuring 2 cemented James Wan’s status as a modern-day genre God, but plenty of other fantastic efforts have seemingly flown under the radar.
We’re talking about the little guys, who fight a (completely silly) stigma that comes along with the words “VOD release.” No longer are these non-theatrical openings a wasteland of avoid-at-all-cost titles, and furthermore, companies like A24 are giving these lesser titles the in-movie releases they deserve. This is a great time for horror – you just have to look hard enough.
If you follow my weekly film reviews, then you already know I watch a lot of horror. Like, probably an unhealthy amount (if you ask my family). But, in doing so, I’m able to offer recommendations with a much deeper knowledge, as...

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the teaser trailer for The Accountant starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Tambor, and John Lithgow.
The film is directed by Gavin O'Connor from a screenplay written by Bill Dubuque.

Home invasion thrillers share several aspects, but one of the more common among them is that the home being invaded is typically occupied by a single woman. Clearly women shouldn’t be allowed to live alone, but until we can pass a law forbidding such things from happening their dwellings will continue to be death traps. Maddie (Kate Siegel) is the latest woman to tempt fate by living on her own, but she has a second characteristic that potentially marks her as even more of a victim in the eyes of an assailant — she’s deaf. An illness took her hearing when she was just a teenager, and while she’s found a career as a writer and maintains relationships with family and a seemingly small group of friends, she’s also grown a bit withdrawn over the years.
