Fatphobia?
welshone-1733928 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Most of these reviews are complaining about the 'real' woman being fat-shamed in this episode. Firstly - I'm fat and I can tell you I saw no references to weight at all. The intern was incompetent. The Jeffersonian is for the best of the best, the squints have to be geniuses. Yes, the others make mistakes but if you can't see the difference between their behaviour and Sammy's, maybe you should go back and watch the 11 previous seasons. Second - enough with the 'real' woman BS in the comments. It's seriously offensive. What, a woman can't be real because she's skinny?

Good Episode
tmorris51111 December 2021
This episode was really good. I'm not positive why the other reviews are going on about it one fatphobia. The intern being bad had nothing to do with her size, but her incompetence. I think what the show was trying to do was show how hard it is to be an intern for the anthropology field. The other interns make it look easy and we were just taken back to season 4 when they first started to come around. Not everything has to do with body shapes, and this episode certainly did not. There was another episode in season 3 when it was completely about the body type of a female.

Anyway, I liked the acapella boys banter and how much Aubrey got into it. Hilarious.

Missed opportunity

While there are no references to the new intern's size, the fact that the writers chose to cast a completely incompetent intern as a fat girl is very disappointing.

Seriously?

The one time we get to see a little bit of body diversity, and she's completely incompetent?

Fatphobic episode tells everything you need to know about the show's producers and writers.
VaughanMurrae18 July 2022
The only intern in which body diversity was presented is as clumsy, sluggish and with lower mental acumen than her peers. Shameful, and definitely not the first time this show shows it's contempt for body diversity.

Cringey episode all around
ndtieche16 February 2021
Between the fatphobia and the cringey a capella performances, this is one of the worst Bones episodes. The writers' treatment of non-thin people on this show is gross.

Disappointing
mechanoid-675884 February 2021
Overall I enjoy the series, the complex interpersonal relationships and the overarching subplots but this episode succeeds at only disappointing.

Apart from the annoying main story, the sub story with the new intern is the most disappointing. The take from this episode seems to be "You can work yourself to the bone to get to be an intern, but if you lack confidence because of your life so far, and are not skinny then sorry your fired". How is that supposed to encourage younger viewers who may look to bones as an inspiration. So much for encouraging diversity in stem.

Bones should be fired too
madsmatrix4 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
To me, this is one of the worst episodes of Bones. I do not care about the rest of the plot, but firing the intern because of a series of mistakes on her first chance to work with the team? Initially I thought, the conclusion of this episode would show some humbleness on Bones side. But no. Just like that out of the door goodbye, you suck.

Bones as a person has so many flaws, and especially flaws that make her entirely inadequate for most aspects of her professional life except the science. With no social skills whatsoever, she should have been fired so often for serious misbehaviour, overstepping her competence, publicly blurting out accusations that in the end had no ground. But no.

All of her missteps end with "I see this now ... I should not have ... " and three episodes further on we see her do exactly the same kind of mess and socially inadequate behaviour again.

And let's be honest, especially with American standards for squeezing money out of situations, many of the wrongly accused could get back at her legally for her terrible behaviour and would win unless the system does not work (eh Booth, ehhh ?). And the Jeffersonian would have to pay big time or FIRE HER. But it makes a good story.

And it probably caters a lot of people to see the weak, non-brilliant, who has a dream and works hard for it get dismissed just the way Sammy was. If you see somebody struggle, you move them into a supporting role, have them observe, do more homework. You can eventual dismiss them entirely, if there is no drive to get better, but you need to give them time. And inviting an intern that clearly is not yet ready for the "stage" to be primary assistant is just unprofessional to begin with.

The series tries to be strong on moral - but is actually super arrogant, stereotypical and fails big time. It started good but ... fell flat towards the end.

Two very different storylines
herriwood4 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the rip off of Pitch Perfect and the fact that Aubrey, love him, sang in college. It was fun and crazy and my escape for the week.

HOWEVER, and it's a BIG HOWEVER, on the one hand you have a female striking forward into a male only environment and then you have a lovely new intern, who looks like a normal woman, who was treated appallingly. Made me angry when Sammy was fired for being inexperienced and trying to learn. The only reason she was in this episode when we've never heard of her before, was so she could be abused by Bones and have her whole life destroyed. She was made to look incompetent when really it was all about her size.

Shame on Bones for tearing down a woman trying to get into forge a career in science. Shame on the show for fat shaming and making a disposable character be a larger framed girl. I'm spotting a trend with the show's treatment of real women. It's not a good one. Not a kind episode and certainly not forward thinking. Left a bad taste. Women are all shapes and sizes, not stick insects or clothes racks. No one's had a go a Bones for not losing the baby weight, so why attack Sammy?

Missing the point - re the *fat* girl
Glitterykittywitch3 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The reviewers trying to defend the episode are entirely missing the point.

***Contains spoilers for other episodes*** The fact is the episode (arguably the whole show) is fatphobic, they CHOSE to cast a larger girl, the only larger intern we ever see, as a complete failure. This is one of hundreds of micro expressions that people are bombarded with shaming body inclusivity.

A few other examples in this very show Howard Epps mother, created a monster, smells of fungus - Played by a very large lady.

The human candle episode, mocks the eater/ feeder lifestyle, the victim while thin now, committed fraud to get thin.

The entire *fat Pam* incident

The entire main cast is thin, to the extreme in the case of Cam Saroyan.

That is what people are complaining about.

A 3 simply
charlotteiflick16 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love Pentatonix. So I enjoyed that portion of the show. That would have been a 10 for me. I agree with most of the other reviewers who said the fat phobia in this episode was annoying. They equated her inadequacies to her body size. No one completing a doctorate could be that ineffective. We didn't see any of that phobia when Emily Deschanel was carrying around that extra 40 lb after her first pregnancy. There are too many storylines in this episode. We had the acapella singing groups, Parker's summer plans, a new intern, and Aubrey's University escapades, and Hodgins application for surgery to reverse his paralysis. Too many to follow.

If I wanted to watch a boring singing show I'd watch glee
zachariestp21 August 2022
The many boring music scenes detract from the plot, just like all the "hidden" car and tech ads. Additionally, many plot points are so trope-y I felt like I was watching an isekai anime.

Disgusting Behavior
Hitchcoc22 March 2023
So we start out with the new intern, Sammy. It's obvious that she is frightened and it is her first (and only) day. Bones sends her packing. She is chunky and sort of unattractive physically. Unlike those women in the singing group who have every advantage, including their fashion model appearances. The men's group is the same. Weren't those the Pentatonix in there? Then we have the Boorish Ape Booth passing judgment on the kids in the singing group because that's what they chose to do with their spare time in college. What? No football? What? No using your size to intimidate people. The way he walks into their rehearsals is disgusting. Finally, he gets a shot at Aubrey and diminishes the importance of his musical accomplishments. One more shot! And Brennan and her high horse. Of course, she could put down that poor woman because she could pick and choose her ammunition. I'm really surprised that Booth decided not to go after his son, who wanted to pursue his dreams. How generous of him. He gets the joy of being this big guy, condescending despite his feelings.
