Bored and uninspired, a young woman has been struggling to become an artist since she was a child. Dumped by the love of her life, she discovers unhappiness makes her creative and publishes her first collection of poetry. Compulsively seeking increasingly melodramatic ways to make herself miserable, the young artist believes that she can be successful if she is troubled. Heaven Knows satirises and challenges the stereotype of the suffering artist.
