Bob Neuwirth and D.A. Pennebaker sit down for a casual and amiable 31-one minute chat in this retrospective documentary. The pair discuss the Bob Dylan documentary "Don't Look Back" as well as several other movies that they have done throughout the years. Pennebaker reveals on the first day of shooting "Don't Look Back" in a hotel room that it wasn't going to be a typical concert film. Neuwirth talks about how he first met Bob Dylan at a folk music festival. Moreover, Pennebaker points out that Jane Fonda came up with the idea to read a negative review of her disastrous Broadway debut in the documentary short "Jane," states that the key thing that made "Monterey Pop" successful was simply hiring the right people and setting them loose, and describes Dylan as a poet who didn't know what poets are. In addition, the duo praise Janis Joplin to the high heavens and mention a documentary project they were going to do on Joplin that fell through. Recommended viewing for fans of both of these guys.

D.A. Pennebaker and Bob Neuwirth on 'Don't Look Back' (2015)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

You've got to give the Criterion Collection a lot of praise. When they released Bob Dylan's DON'T LOOK BACK to Blu-ray they not only ported over all the previous bonus features but created several new ones. This one here clocks in at 31 minutes and has director D.A. Pennebaker sitting down with Bob Neuwirth as the two discuss their friendship, how they started working together and various music festivals/events that have been put on film by the director. This documentary has a terrific feel to it as it really does seem like two friends just sitting down to have a long chat. Both men tell some terrific stories about not only DON'T LOOK BACK but also MONTERY POP and just an overall vibe of the music scene at that time. If you're a fan of Dylan or Pennebaker then this here is certainly a must see as there are some great behind-the-scenes stories shared.
