English version of "Wieczór wigilijny", adapted by
Anne Wood of the production company FilmFair, was shortened and re-edited to a ~5 minute episode titled "Christmas". It was originally broadcast in the UK in 1983 (as episode 22) on Central Independent Television, as part of its "Watch It!" strand of children's programming. The main differences of the UK episode include:
- The opening sequence of the snowy and windy Moominvalley is shorter. Some of the missing shots include the owl looking from the hollow tree, Woodland Spirits hiding from the wind, Fillyjonk walking with presents, and squirrels looking from the tree.
- Some shots are missing from the sequence where Hemulen climbs onto the roof of the Moominhouse and emerges from a trap door. Some of the missing shots include the wider exterior of the house, Hemulen shoveling snow from the ground and also from the roof, and some additional shots of Hemulen when he walks downstairs and eventually next to Moominpappa's bed.
- When the Moomin family wakes up, some shots are missing: anxious Moomintroll tells Moominmamma about the Christmas Eve, looks outside the window and adjusts the longcase clock. Some shots are also missing when the Moomin family looks outside the window and when presents are falling from Gaffsie's sledge.
- The sequence where the Moomin family is shoveling snow outside the Moominhouse is shorter. Missing shots include Moomintroll and Moominmamma shoveling snow and some shots when Moominmamma finds a small woodland creature from the porch.
- During the decoration of the tree, missing shots include the small creature coming to give instructions (later on the creature takes the red rose to the top of the tree), Moominmamma bringing decorations and spreading the tablecloth on the ground, and Moomintroll and Pappa bringing presents from the house.
- When it gets dark, some of the missing shots include the second shot of the scene where Moomintroll is bringing the candle to his parents, the owl landing on a tree, and the scene where the other forest animals and creatures arrive with candles (when they gather around the tree, Moomintroll is giving them food which they start to eat). Also missing is the additional shot of the squirrel and a few scenes after the presents are opened.
- Missing is the ending scene, where the tired Moomin family are back in their beds and continue their winter sleep. There are also a few shots of the Moominvalley while it's snowing.
- Notable soundtrack cue in the UK version by composers Steve Shill and Graeme Miller can be heard at the end of the episode, where Moominmamma and Pappa sit next to a decorated Christmas tree (and the forest creatures gather to celebrate). The arrangement of the Christmas hymn "Silent Night" by the composer Franz Xaver Gruber can be heard on the background.
