The Comedy Is Really Funny, BUT
acutisnasus29 March 2019
I Liked the jokes very much, but it felt off.

The Pros:

Like I said the comedy is funny, all the interactions between characters is comedy orientated and you can see that in every single scene. The actors were somewhat acting over the top which, to me, fitted the mood and story of the movie.

Overall, all human interactions and dialogs were comedy orientated and you could really see there were a lot of funny ideas, it is pretty cool to see a very funny man show us what he does best.

The Cons:

Like I said the comedy is really funny, BUT It did not feel like a movie, there were a couple of things that felt off. And in my opinion there were 2 major things causing this;

Environment sound:

The change from having only environment sound or only music or no background sound at all felt clunky. And at some moments the environment sound did not fit with the scene.

Music:

The timing of the music felt off. It feels awkward when you are laughing after a punchline and 2 sec later music starts, I stopped laughing each time because I expected something to happen and this would happen a lot. In some scenes the music would suddenly stop or begin to emphasise the spoken or physical comedy at weird timings, It felt clunky.

Maybe it would have helped if the music was thought of as the introduction, applause and laughter within a standup routine, put the music where you would 'expect' those 3 things to occur in the movie and you would probably be on par with the audience laughing and each scene with music would not feel off and clunky.

The jokes are very funny, fantastic ideas, but to me the environment sound and the timing of the music stagnated the flow and feel of the jokes and the movie.

Therefore a rating of 5.

Torn

So I've been a fan of Titus since watching his shows and stand up, which are honed, finished products that have audience input that make them, when put to film, really good.

But what seems to happen to this film is that, with a low budget and possibly too little input, it's an okay film with funny moments rather than a coherent piece of filmmaking.

I think it really helps if you give characters a reason to exist. If I believe there is a story behind their behavior, it's a lot easier to understand their motivation. Other than a few moments, I couldn't understand why I'd want to care what happened to this group of people, and I really wanted to.

The Specials

A lady mayor, jilted by her ex-fiance, gets him to work with a group of cadets who are part of a disability scheme, in order to get re-elected. I really don't know what to feel about this, I would love to have a view from the disabled community. The four disabled cadets are excellent, very funny and yet there is so much 'cheap shot' humour. Although you expect that everything will turn out okay, calling people with disabilities "Retards" constantly, is just not cool! The idea was great, the acting and casting was spot on, the script was the only thing that I found close to retarded. Amusing scenes at a gun range and martial arts class. The scene where school kids parade to safety when a shooter enters their school is just plain harrowing. So much potential, I really did enjoy it, I just felt unnecessarily uncomfortable t times.

Disappointed
curtis_chappell8 April 2019
I have always liked Christopher Titus stand up. I think his comedy is genius. Since I am familiar with his act and his attitude towards the differently abled I do understand his attempt to make a comedic film with a message. However, this movie just isn't funny. Period. Either it's the production values, script or some other contributing factor that makes the actors appear to be bad, B-movie actors. Reminiscent of the same caliber of acting found in Ed Woods "Plan 9 from Outer Space" bad. Maybe it was the difficult task of trying to make disabled characters funny. Don't misunderstand me. I am not objecting to the material because the portrayal of mentally and physically handicapped people. I am objecting because this particular movie doesn't manage to make this uncomfortable subject humorous. And maybe no one can. Whatever the reason the production was just embarrassingly awkward and third rate. Overall, Special Unit is like a student film produced by immature frat boys.

A feel-good movie that ultimately lacked comedy...
paul_haakonsen24 November 2019
I stumbled upon the 2017 movie "Special Unit" by random luck. I picked it up and it seemed like a comedy that could be really good, so of course I sat down to watch the movie.

While "Special Unit" was watchable, it wasn't really a particularly outstanding, memorable or overly funny comedy from writer and director Christopher Titus. Sure, the movie definitely had its moments and there were some funny scenes. But this is not the type of comedy that will have you toppled over laughing so hard you'll have tears streaking down your cheeks.

The story was adequate although it seemed fairly out there at times, but in overall it was working out well enough for what it turned out to be.

As for the acting, well I will say that the actors and actresses in the movie actually performed quite well, taking into consideration the limitations placed on them from the script and storyline.

"Special Unit" is the type of comedy that you will watch once, if you don't get offended by the comedic jabs at disabilities throughout the movie and the portrayal of disabled people, but it is hardly a movie that you will watch more than once.

I feel that "Special Unit" ended up as a mediocre comedy. It did entertain adequately, but it just had too many shortcomings for it to be an outstanding movie, and it just never managed to move out of the mediocre sandbox. I am rating "Special Unit" five out of ten stars. It is a feel-good movie, but it was just lacking on the comedy parts.

I'm Batman

Warning: Spoilers
This is a politically incorrect comedy similar in many ways to Police Academy. After shooting his partner Garret (Christopher Titus) is in charge of training 4 handicapped people to be police officers. In addition to the overt funny lines, there are hidden lines such as when they say Sophie (Debbie Lee Carrington) the vertically challenged person, is always "grumpy." Or when they scream "Alvin" like Dave Seville. I found myself laughing.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Predictable and formulaic. Disappointing. Filled with old jokes. I was hoping for more creativity.

I needed this movie
jerzio136 December 2020
Definitely not leaving any spoilers behind because I'd rather have people watch this for themselves. I just have to say that since we're not going to get to see any Al Bundy's down humor anymore or humor like this movie provides. On account of the fact that our delicate thin-skinned little Snowflake culture we've cultivated will no longer allow us to have a laugh. I am considered disabled. I feel that every once in a while we have to enjoy a little bit of dark humor or even humor that is completely inappropriate. This whole movie is completely inappropriate. But, it's intended to be. We just need to be able to laugh at ourselves more. If we can't learn to do that then we're already more disabled than we think.

comedy without humor
RvBreukie24 March 2019
So where to start? The bad acting? Poorly written script? The shallow plot? I would not recommand it, unless you're planning on watching this with a 10 year old, they might enjoy it enough not to instantly fall asleep.

expected a few laughs

Expecting a poor Adam Sandler movie, or low brow Deuce Bigalow- yes, even lower, a ridiculous concept with some possibilities for a lot of silliness- mindless humor. Partly bec I like Titus. However, this is so sad, as just bad. Giving it a chance despite a poor opening- It got so painful, from the beginning. Hungin the first 30 minutes, till I couldn't stand it anymore. I had to say enough. This makes "book club" look like a masterpiece. and that's saying a lot. Take the worse skit ever from SNL (when they miss they miss big) and make it 10 times worse. seeing that Titus really worked on this movie;believes in it, all I can say is maybe he was too close. Maybe this shows that some comedians don't understand their own comedy or what works and why- this is so bad!

Wasn't expecting this.
shadesofgrey-7713530 October 2017
I've been a huge fan of Christopher Titus for years and I listen to his podcast occasionally. Lately he's been promoting this movie and honestly his repeated promotions got old. It got to the point where I'd just skip them or even shut off his podcasts when he'd start. Eventually when this movie came out I saw promotions for it and I just turned away. I didn't expect it to be a bad movie but I wasn't expecting it to be good either. In order to prevent having a bad or meh experience I just decided to ignore it. Well, tonight I decided to just go on a whim and just watch it. I mean the way Titus has been raving about how hard he and his team have been working on this thing I figured I should at least be a decent fan and checkout his work and try to support him in some way. I went into the movie with low expectations and well, I was absolutely pleased with this thing! Like, The jokes in this thing were right after another at a few times I had to pause the darn thing just to catch my breath from laughing too hard. It was nice to see a few cameo appearances from some of Titus' old co-stars from his old sitcom like Zack Ward (He did a few stunts in the beginning) and Cynthia Watros (She played the mayor). As for the characters, I found Alvin's character to be the best dude stole the show and his scenes had me laughing hysterically. I have to say, if you've been on the fence about seeing this movie you should definitely give it a shot. Great job Combustion Films team! I can't wait to see your next project! Keep up the good work.

Christopher Titus delivers again
calibanplayer26 April 2020
I've always enjoyed the work of Christopher Titus and in this film he does not disappoint. The humor is slightly irreverent, but funny. The main plot involves a police department having to create a unit of police officers with disabilities due to the fairness in disabilities act. Titus plays a screw-up cop who ends up in charge of this "Special Unit".

The movie is funny without making fun of people with disabilities and the production hired several disabled actors to appear in the film.

The always enjoyable Billy Gardell shows up as the police captain, and we get a great performance from the late Debbie Lee Carrington is wonderful in this film.

The real star here is Christopher Titus, who wrote, directed and started in the movie and managed to make a great film that holds up to repeat viewing.

If you like funny, off-beat humor or are a fan of Christopher Titus's stand-up you will love this movie.

Fun, good characters and story.
algernonstruther10 September 2019
A puzzler for us at first - disabled detectives - how can it possibly work as a movie?! It did, and was funny too, although not at the expense of anyone's dignity. Innovative as well which is unusual for Hollywood these days. Although, in the end it did go with 'feel good' but that wasn't a bad thing. Many of today's movies are depressing because they're stupid in the literal sense, offering nothing much except cardboard cutouts and CGI. This movie gave perspective on what disabled folk face, but still allowed us to laugh with them through their difficulties, and like the characters, and root for them. We'll be looking out for more Titus movies.

Fairly good comedy
a_mundo23 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I liked it, but it's not a great movie. There is a lot of emphasis on the disability aspect, without clarifying the disabilities. While watching, a lot of time is spent trying to figure out what's wrong with David Figliolis character.

The movie is trying to do too much. There are too many characters with no character development. It just makes everything seem forced. It feels like watching the second half of the movie without having watched the first.

One of the funniest movies I've ever watched. Definitely not P. C. which made it even better. This is exactly what comedy is all about. Thank you Titus!
