Familiar and Different at the same time.
dameon_green26 May 2020
It's impossible not to compare this to AoT in your mind reflexively, but it is without question it's own anime.

Yes it's another Post-Apocalypse show with a dash of "Steampunk" style action thrown in, with a hero with a special ability, but that is were the similarities end.

Overall it's a bleak and beautiful world hanging on by its nails, and as it tries to claw its way back from the edge humanities self-destructive tendencies strike as is to often the case.

Broadly enjoyable zombie/steampunk/train anime with some great animation
pjpears23 October 2019
There's not much (that I know of) in the zombie/steampunk world and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is a sold, interesting and generally likable entry into this market.

Its helped in this effort by some interesting world-building, the zombie (Kabane) outbreak seems to have happened at the height of the Japanese samurai age, with survivors grouped in great walled cities protected by samurai musket-men. At the start in particular there is a good focus on class, honor and society. These cities are connected by great iron railways on which armored trains run, taking supplies and people from one to the next, running the gauntlet of horrific zombie hordes from which, a single bite proves entirely fatal..

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress starts strong with a great two part episode showing the horrific attack of the Kabane (basically fast zombies with flowing hearts, eyes and a nasty bite) on a walled survivors city. Its a great two episodes with a high body count, some terrific action and a desperate escape by armored train. Alas the series steadily looses it's way, but the ride is nevertheless enjoyable while it lasts.

Whats good?
  • While it lasts, the story is quite enjoyable, being a sort of bizzaro 'Battlestar Galactica on rails' as our heroes and survivors try to reach safety aboard the great steam train. Its tense, interesting and fresh.
  • The supporting cast is largely interesting and well voiced. You care for them more then our main characters anyway.
  • The Kabane make for a horrific, interesting foe, a worthy entry into the zombie market.
  • Mumei is...well for the first half of the series quite an interesting, watchable character, seeing how the survivors view her and Ikoma is quite interesting.
  • The animation is generally excellent as is the character design, the use of CGI (for the iron trains) is solid and the Japanese voicework is similarly good.
  • Excellent opening track, one of the best, a thunderous operatic ode.

Whats bad?
  • Ikoma makes for a...well a fairly unlikable lead. He's not as bad as some might make out, but he is a little irritating and his character arc is fumbled.
  • The second half makes a regrettable choice to focus on more human enemies. These enemies are both obvious, cliche and uninteresting, the second half is watchable but a notable drop in tension, interest and horror.
  • This coincides with a notable change in Mumei from bad-ass mysterious warrior to the 'oni-chan' damsel in distress, hugely regrettable.

Conclusion This is a solid series, particularly for those into zombies, steamtrains and samurai, three things that don't normally appear together. While, yes, it probably never would have been made if Attack on Titan didn't exist it really is different enough to warrant a watch. Try it, enjoy it and don't watch the follow up (bleh)

Solid show, rushed at the end
collinszachary21 February 2021
If you like AOT it's got enough in common to make you watch but it's differences make it its own show. However, it's not as well fleshed out as AOT. The characters such as ikoma, ayame and mumei are interesting but they could use more character development. Also, i actually like the pop rock with the action scenes, it's different. The threat of the Kabane though suspenseful and compelling isn't explored well enough to me. Maybe I missed something but the show doesnt explain where they come from, how they came to be and how exactly the main antagonist uses them. The threat switching more so from kabane to human is a bit jarring because it happens quickly. The show is good especially the last 3 episodes which are exciting but they are rushed. A lot happens and i feel most shows would've stretched those last several episodes into 6-9 episodes easily. 12 episodes isn't enough to adequately flesh out the show but to keep it short I feel like 20-24 would've done it. Some motives, back stories, etc are cut short or i feel ignored entirely but otherwise an enjoyable fast paced show. A solid 8.

Dumb characters, bad story, nice scenery!
Pooyan192015 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I am all for a zombie anime with compelling story, beautiful scenery and great characters. Unfortunately is good at only 1 of these elements. The scenery and action squenses are great. Not that it wasn't expected from Wit studio. Other than that nothing else works. The core of the story is not original but it works. At least it's straight forward and includes trains which I like. The world building is not great. There is no backstory for the world, like how this thing started and how they built these towns. Characters also suffer from lack of backstory and personality. Almost every side character is more interesting than the main character(Ikoma). He's certainly on top of most hateful characters in all entertainment. I've watched many shows with bad main character but this one is on another level. Such a stupid, useless, weak, always yelling, cliche character. As matter affect i think the show would be better without him. Got to admit all the females character in the show had more personality and generally were more complex. Momei and Ayame even the other Kabaneri woman all were strong and faced with difficult decision. Unlike the stupid yelling main character or super cliche bad dude. The bad guy in this series is a joke. Overalll, it's a shame. I like their approach to zombie genre. I even like the zombies but bad story, disastrous main character and bad guy, stupid backstories, lack of character development, rushed story lines and many plot holes makes this show a below average kind of show. My score is because I was high watching the show and enjoyed the action scenes but not a great one.

This is not an AOT copy
uberloompa10 November 2018
First off, many are comparing this to Attack on Titan, but they are completely different. The kabane are zombie-like creatures with less intrigue than titans from AOT. The anime focuses less on the threat of the kabane and more on the social tension. The animation and soundtrack are amazing, often similar to AOT but that's to be expected given they share the same studio. The apocalyptic Japanese-steampunk setting draws you in and captivates you. Every episode kept you intrigued and hooked you to keep watching. There's barely any filler in the show which makes it packed full of plot. The villain is truly despicable, developing a hatred for him in just a couple episodes. Overall well done. I would give it a 10 if there were more episodes since some it did feel rushed in some of the backstory and plot points.

What a train wreck of a second half
NoneOfYourDamnBeeswax20 February 2023
This is a show that fails to deliver upon its rampaging and promising start, with a script and dialogue not on par with the animation quality accomplished by WIT Studio. For as good as the first episodes are, the moment the main villain is presented, everything turns sour, as the universe is pretty much unknown and none of the other characters are that enchanting or great to compensate for the failure of a character called to have that much weight in the story and who takes that much away from the Kabaneri and their ominous, fear-inducing portrayal when first introduced.

He is a stereotypical bad guy, with a cheap ass back story and purpose, with no nuance nor anything particular about him. He says ambiguous things with no real purpose or profound meaning, no subtext. It's nonsensical. There are no glimpses as to what great purpose or charismatic attributes would make him and his endeavor worth following. Are his followers driven by hate towards someone? What collective sentiments has he managed to channel and use? Things simply are and are so by repeating tropes in a poorly written manner. "The weak die, and only the strong survive". Really? Is that all that there's to it? That and the overall contempt for the general non-productive panic state that this world seems to be in? He just happens to be there to move the plot, aiming it to the dirt and mining whatever effort was there to make this universe interesting.

While the other characters also fail in a second half with its fill of cheesy, poor-writing moments that offer little explanation or sense for what is happening, the villain centers responsibility as he is the mayor contributor to the downfall of the series.

Looks good, but the story is pretty flat.
Lukasmj16 November 2022
The world is in the midst of an industrial revolution when near-immortal monsters appear and, through infection, turn humans into undead creatures: the Kabane. These monsters' only weakness seems to lie in their hearts, but these are protected by a thick layer of iron, requiring tremendous firepower or physical strength to destroy.

On the island of Hinomoto in the Far East, humans have built stations to protect themselves from these creatures; the transportation of people and goods between these stations takes place with the help of huge steam locomotives called hayajiro. The inventive Ikoma not only helps build these locomotives, he has also developed his own weapon to fight the evil creatures with.

When one day his home, the Aragane station, is overrun by Kabane, he tries to save himself with other survivors on board the Koutetsujou. After being bitten while successfully fending off a Kabane, he decides to sacrifice himself to allow the others to escape. However, he is saved at the last second by the mysterious Mumei, who explains to him what he has become: a hybrid of human and Kabane - a Kabaneri.

"Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress" actually surprised me positively, but that was probably because I wasn't expecting much.

The anime looks nice, just like the fights.

The story is relatively predictable, but the anime is still fun.

But it's mainly something for the eye.

Similar to AOT, but NOT a copy. Read below
gingeryzane30 November 2020
I see all these reviews stating this show is a COPY of attack on Titan. So does that mean every shounen of the past 10 years is a copy of dragon ball, one piece, naruto, or HxH? NO! This show shares similar points as attack on Titan as a Sienen show about survival, and it is incredibly fun and well animated. Do not listen to these reviews stating it's a copy - it is fun in it's own right. Watch it for yourself and see if you enjoy it, because others can vouch - it's a great time.

The same cliche but worth watching.
abhinavrajeev10 May 2018
The story line is painfully similar to attack on Titan but it deviates just a little bit around episode 5. It's too much violent but I still found it entertaining. I wouldn't recommend it if you already saw AOT.

Great freaking anime!
jace-rynearson3 June 2017
I'll be brief, I love this anime already. I watched the first episode not really expecting much and I was amazed. I then watched the rest of the season, and loved every minute. The story is great, the animation is beyond top-notch, the voice acting and characters are great, and I absolutely love the music (especially the opening and closing themes). On top of all that, it's intense but also emotional, and it mixes those perfectly. I don't know why people keep saying it's an Attack on Titan clone, because it's not. It's it's own original idea. It takes a zombie apocalypse to a whole new level and it is great. All in all, it's one of those very rare perfect anime shows. Can't wait for the second season, I hope there's a second season.

Starts strong and then goes Wrong.
galaxynova-2366223 February 2023
I was so excited when i started watching this(even though i got the hint that it's kind of a Attack on Titan copy), but as i finished each episode i came to realize why this never got a proper sequal (I'm unaware of the amount of source metarial). It became so infuriating (especially for wasting the hard work of the animators) that i almost deleted the last two episodes without watching ( beared my frustration somehow and finished).

Conclusion, superb animation (identical to aot by wit)+fine artstyle(subjective)+near trash characters+rushed story+pleasent audio experience(for anime).i rest my case.

It's a funny copy of attack on Titan
polli-9719219 January 2022
When watching Kabaneri, everyone catches flashbacks to Attack of the Titans, and I am no exception here. It's still the same plot that there are humans and then there are kabanehs (you recognize that, right? Humans and titans). There are kabane infected with a deadly virus and become monsters, and there are kabaneri who have the abilities of kabane but retain a human appearance. All the same walls around cities that we're used to seeing, except there's also a huge train around which events unfold. There's a young girl running around killing everyone around her. All in all, those who like anime will like it, but for once to watch, to be honest.

Watchable and fun
molobelalesedi11 November 2021
If you like zombies and action, then this is for you. It reminds me of Attack on Titan. The action is pretty good. I am just disappointed there is only one season. The story is solid and is anchored in grief.

If you want violence and death, youll like this. Its not the greatest, but it is worth watching.

Oh my...
guiden8016 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
...it seems some people are comparing this to "Attack on Titan". That's just wrong. This show is, at best, an extremely weak attempt to do something similar. But failing. Miserably. The protagonist is your run of the mill, screaming-at-any-and-all-injustice cliche anime hero. No matter how many times he gets told to put a cork in it or literally gets knocked out, he just keeps going for it. The story gets more boring every episode, the villain is beyond ridiculous (basically he's a pink haired emo samurai with lame daddy issues) and the ending is nonsensical to the point where it feels like it must be a joke. Avoid, it's not hard to find a better anime to watch. At all.

And i thought attack on titan was the best anime....
benjiboy-8449110 April 2016
This anime has exceeded my expectations the first episode (spoiler free) is 10 times better than attack on titan's first season altogether, we are introduced to a great variety of characters at the start- Mumei, Ikoma, Yukima, Sukari and a lots of other characters at the start first of all Ikoma is way more intriguing than eren yaeger but anyways on to the important stuff, there is some sort of apocalypse going on during and industrial revolution, you aren't given any explanations about how it started but all you know is that the creatures are called kabane (zombie like creatures) and they can only be killed by piercing their heart, as for the survivors, they all live in big walled cities called stations, the only way in and out is by armored trains which look awesome, Ikoma is working on a special weapon which he believes kills the kabane easily and one day his skills are put to the test when the kabane invade the station, I'm not going to say anything else, just watch it, I guarantee you will love it after the first episode.

BEST anime of 2016, could be 2018 if there is season 2
moncikoma22 May 2016
This anime have something that interested me when i first saw the trailer, first of all is the Character design. it was created by Haruhiko Mikimoto (anime such as Macross, Gunbuster, Gundam War in The Pocket)

Because of that Kabaneri of The Iron Fortress stands out different and proud than any other anime at this time

Secondly, this anime was created by the same studio, same director, and composer who did the Attack on Titan 3 years ago.

As the results, even now Kabaneri of The Iron Fortress is gaining popularity so fast on its Twitter account (already gained 61.600 follower) since 6th episode aired.

I cannot review the final score for now, but i can give you just numbers, to get the idea on how great this anime is,

EPISODE score : ep 1 : 8/10 ep 2 : 9/10 ep 3 : 8.5/10 ep 4 : 10/10 - END OF PROLOUGE - ep 5 : 9/10 ep 6 : 15/10 - Beautiful. Simply beautiful.

Maybe i am overrated, but i believe it is true for many new anime watchers, especially for a 15 years old teenagers who loved action packed story with strong character such as Mumei, killing zombies on train.

Yes, Train combined with steam punk samurai settings is the main reason why this anime is interesting almost for everyone. even my 72 years old dad could enjoy it with me.

Kabaneri of The Iron Fortress story and plot is pretty much happening inside the train, which makes it very ideal for high speed fighting entertainment. and the characters also seems to be the big reason why people hooked on the story.

By the end of episode 6 i really enjoyed how the character developing with each other, almost all the characters in this anime have their own charisma and appeal for everyone.

Even if the story puzzle and questions did not answered by the end of episode 6, i am sure most of it will be answered when it reached episode 8, and everything will go south and plot intensifies starting from episode 9 to 12 (the final episode).

i hope this review meant something for everyone. thank you for reading my review!

ROKKON SHOJO!

Warning: Spoilers
i love anime have done since i was young, so far this is one of my personal top 5. the story line is great the characters are brilliant. Ikoma is definitely a fave out of the guys, and by hell did I wanna kill Biba until...well you'll have to watch it. that guy only has the one redeeming quality. Kurusu is a lovely character and Ayame you get to watch mature which is nice because they stick to the rules of Japan in Edo times.

The animation was amazing, you can really see the work they've put into it and its defiantly paid off. The only downside is the series was so short

Stop falsely comparing everything and you will enjoy it
sane12169 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Having just watched Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress I wanted to quickly address some of the complaints about the similarities to Attack on Titan.

The main similarities I see that someone could bring up between KotIF and AoT are these: 1) It takes place in a relatively post-apocalyptic setting. 2) Humanity is fighting against monstrosities threatening the existence of mankind. 3) Humanity lives in a walled city environment. 4) The walled city is breached in the first episode. 5) The main character wants revenge. 6) The main female character, so far, is stronger than the main male character. 7) There is some type of militarized fighting forced designed to protect the remnants of humanity against the monster threat. 8) The main characters have hybrid powers that help them fight the monsters.

In these comparisons there are differences that set Kabaneri apart and the reason I say people are over-reaching to find a problem with these. For instance:

1)In Attack on Titan the setting is 100+ years after the Titans appear. In Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress the time is still within the same period that the monsters appear, not 100+ years after it.

2)The monsters are not titans. They are not giants. I know some scenes make the monsters appear to be large, but when the humans, the Bushi warriors, fight the Kabane, the monsters, they all are of equal size with a few hulking or tall monsters here and there, but even then it is nothing beyond a tall human since the monsters are created when a Kabane bites an uninfected human. With that said, the Kabane are somewhat the equivalent to what most movies and television shows would call a Zombie. Not a giant. The Kabane/Zombie have the ability to heal, are stronger than normal humans, more durable, and for some reason their heart glows and is hard to pierce. Given that fact, piercing the heart and chopping off the head seem to be the only way to kill them which would also make the Kabane similar to the Western concept of a Vampire. Not a giant. Contrast this to AoT where the Titans are only killed by cutting out the nape of the neck.

3)In both stories humanity lives in a walled city, however, in Kabane of the Iron Fortress there is more than one walled city. In the opening scenes the train travels through one walled city, they call train stations that has already been overrun prior to the story starting. The walled city that the story starts in is another walled city and after that one is attacked by the Kabane you discover through character dialogue that there may be other surviving walled cities/stations. Contrast this to AoT's solo surviving human walled city.

4)As stated before, the second walled city you are introduced to is breached by the Kabane. Similarly, the walled city in AoT is breached. The differences are in how the breach happens.

5)The only similarity I can think of between the two main characters is Eren wants revenge against the Titans and hates them for the breach and the death of his mother and Ikoma wants revenge and hates the Kobane for something that happened in his past. The differences in these two characters are far more recognizable. Ikoma saves himself at a pivotal point in the story whereas had that been Eren, he would've gotten saved by Mikasa or someone else. Ikoma is aware of and starts to gain some relative control of his hybrid abilities despite misunderstanding them pretty early in the story whereas it takes Eren some time to figure out he is a Titan Shifter and how to control his abilities. In fact, deep into the manga, Eren still has a difficult time controlling his abilities. Their personalities are relatively similar, but one should chalk this up to anime and manga using stereotypical generic tropes in characterization rather than the creative team copying AoT into Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress.

6)Mikasa and Mumei, at least, start off stronger than the main male lead. I'll also add they both have somewhat of an odd, aloof, emotionless personality. I'd argue that Mikasa showed more emotion than Mumei early on in the story, but is somewhat of that stereotypical trope of an emotionless character who sometimes shows emotion. Still, the main similarity I see between the both of them is in strength. However, once again the differences are more prevalent. While Mikasa was good using the Vertical Maneuvering Equipment the corps used to fight Titans, Mumei started off with the impression she was simply good at fighting Kabane with fighting skills and the gas/air powered guns they use to pierce Kabane hearts

7)There is a militarized fighting force that defends and assaults the monster threat. In AoT these are the Survey Corps along with, I think, two to three other branches of the military. In KotIF, these are the Bushi warriors. While this is a general similarity, I don't think one could point to it with any real strength of an argument.

8)The main characters have hybrid powers, or the existence of hybrid powers. The problem with calling this a similarity to AoT and only AoT ignores the usage of this trope in a number of other anime and manga. Not only this, but again, Ikoma and Mumei have and use their hybrid abilities fairly early in the story whereas Eren doesn't unconsciously use his abilities until far later into the first season of AoT and even then it takes a small amount of time for the story to reveal it is Eren.

In all this, this show offers a unique view of various tropes mentioned above. Ikoma, the main character alone doesn't simply cry about his situation or declare loudly how he will win and overcome. He actually does it and it makes sense despite the lack of tact during his victories.

horrible
jmride8 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Started watching this with really high hopes, given all the hype and big names in the cast and that humongous budget it has. At the 4th episode this show already managed to go down the drain. Copying so many aspects out of Attack on Titan (main character becoming a kabane- human was already too much, but to add it up he can also regenerate fast because of it, whoa! Oh and guess what his main motivation is: You guessed it, to kill ALL the Tita-- I mean kabanes) but adding the unrealistic loli "idgaf and I beat everyone" characters (with the main 'loli bad-ass' fighting with gear that somehow stupidly manages to look so similar to 3dmg), having every other character be brain-dead (they get saved by kabaneris 23 times in front of their eyes yet still want to kill them), and adding your best blatant ridiculous shounen plot armour at EPISODE 4, with a character no one even likes yet (unarmed and defeated samurai doesn't get finished off/bitten by sword wielding kabane when he could have because reasons, instead just stab him in the stomach yeah we all know that works so well in anime right?).

Aready episode 4 and kabanes feel like no threat at all, main character and op loli are practically immortal and can kill em all with no effort, just give them some blood whoa so bad-ass. This is an attack on titan copy done wrong, it's cast, studio and budget aimed high but it was terribly disappointing, pointing clearly to being a standard shounen with standard characters, and even pulling attack on titan's only animation weakness: those panning over still images scenes, FOR NO REASON AT ALL, given their huge budget and being not based on a manga, and it won't surprise me when they pull out code geass-style fan-service of which we already had a glimpse. It's like if they said "yeah lets grab all these popular animes, copy everything from them, mix them together and make em worse! It will still give us cash so whatever wohoo!". After reading such an intense chapter 81 of the Attack on Titan manga, kabane episode 4 felt just so shallow and useless, never even managing to give a slight sense of danger that a zombie apocalypse style series is supposed to make you feel.

In conclusion, don't waste your time, it looked promising but then it decided to take the exact same path as other mangas but mix in ALL THE Clichés and plot armour you need when you write a flat out bad story with no direction at all. The supposedly so dangerous kabanes went from big threats where managing to kill one was an accomplishment to useless punching bags that anyone can now kill one-punch-man-style (except of course for your cliché useless female princess character that everyone has to protect), IN A SINGLE EPISODE. Add in how predictable the story is, and you get the worst and most disappointing show I've seen in years. Absolutely not recommended.

Brillant anime
boucquey29 February 2020
Surprisingly good, this anime grabs attention with ambivalent characters and an original work of scenario where nothing is never totally settled, brave and attractive personalities , the only concern is about the easiness how killing and mass destruction is used, like no concern for the masses, as long as one or two still safe. A question if a specialist might enlighten me, does some of the crew of drawning and animated department worked with Miyazaki ? Creatures and some face features strongly remind the master hand.

MAIN CHARACTER PERSONALITY TRAIT
assessresilient9 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have never seen a plot that addresses the mutilation like it. The mutilation between Kabaner and Human are called Kabaneri.

There are certain Mutilation that can Modified or reversed to original kind, which it never seen before in other shows.

IKOMA, deserves the best among his gang because he is wise with his invention and providing his idea to his people. IKOMA is Excellent with his defence ability and at the same time he is Outstanding with his executive plan which makes him a reasonable person to lead a team.

IKOMA- character personality is far outstanding then Luffy in One Piece, Naruto in Naruto series, Goku in Dragon Ball series, Natsu Dragneel in Fairy Tales, because their Main character lakes even the little wisdom and at the same time their stupidity lies clearly in their action. An example where the character thinks about feeding his stomach rather then his brain on the most sensitive and dangerous situation and end up wining.....surprisingly.

The closest character to Ikoma is Gon in Hunter x Hunter, even though he has not made a invention, but rather he was one of the executive planners among his Group. Also he was supportive from the beginning to bring and work together on several projects.

I did not add Conan in Detective Conan, because he is not willing to use time wisely and work toward Ran nor the organization that sized his original size.

I know the story of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is not realistic, but absolutely the Main Character deserves the credit in real life situation not the story plot line.

Fast-paced steampunk apocalypse
cacanindinb14 April 2018
While none of the elements of this show are highly original, the whole, in this case, is much greater than the sum of its parts. Set in medieval Japan, the characters have no effective weapons against countless undead zombies. Instead, they apply ingenuity to build defensive cities connected by a network of train tracks. The characters respond to dire challenges with relatable levels of bravery and wit, and the show moves from obstacle to obstacle at a blistering pace. Still, there is enough character interaction for us to form a connection and desire to seem them succeed. Dramatic sequences play out with surprising deft of color, angle, music cue, and character. Strap in for a thrilling ride.

How to destroy a good idea in the first episode
josenaruto-5344220 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So in this anime they say that when a zombie bites you, you are dead. Is a really cool idea that is obviusly not original, but it makes things difficult for the protagonists. Except that it doesn't, in the very first episode the protagonist gets biten and survives in the most dumb way posible. So instead of a zombie anime, is more of a half-human half-monster tematic anime that is starting to bore me.
