- Three girls - Minal Arora (Taapsee Pannu), Falak Ali (Kirti Kulhari) and Andrea (Andrea Tariang) are staying together as tenants in a posh South Delhi locality and are normal working professionals in their respective fields. One night, after a rock concert they accept a dinner invitation from Rajveer (Angad Bedi), who is the nephew of a powerful politician from South Delhi, and two others to a resort in Surajkund, Faridabad district, Haryana. Rajveer is known to Minal through a common friend. Rajveer and his friends get drunk, and so do Minal and her friends. Seeking the opportunity, the three men separate the three girls from each other. Rajveer then tries to molest Minal, despite her telling him no. Minal picks up a bottle and smashes it on Rajveer's eye, leaving him bleeding.
Seeking revenge, Rajveer and his friends try to vacate the girls from their houses by threatening them and the landlord. Minal is even kidnapped and molested by Rajveer's friends in a moving car. Minal (with the support of her friend) is finally forced to approach the police with the intention of filing a FIR against Rajveer and his friends. However, knowing Rajveer and his family, the female police officer on duty does not register the complaint. Upon realization, Rajveer lodges a false FIR against the girls, labeling them as prostitutes, using his powerful contacts. Minal is then charged for attempted murder and for soliciting, where she could face imprisonment for more than 10 years, if convicted. The other girls are labeled as co-accused.
Deepak Sehgal (Amitabh Bachchan) is a retired lawyer suffering from bipolar disorder who experiences frequent mood swings and has an ailing wife (Mamata Shankar). He is also a neighbor of Minal, Falak and Andrea. He witnesses their troubles and after consultation with his wife, represents the girls in the court as their defense counsel.
Deepak arranges for Minal's bail petition and gets her out. He asks the girls to prepare for trial. The prosecution opens the case by saying that Minal and her friends met Rajveer & his friends at a rock concert. They befriended Rajveer and went together with him to a local farm house. There Minal propositioned Rajveer for sex against payment. Rajveer refused and then Minal attacked him with a glass bottle, which caused a serious injury and could have led to his death.
Prosecution produces witnesses that show that Minal was seen laughing with Rajveer and then going into a room. Then Minal came out after a scream and Rajveer's face was covered with blood. The bottle had Minal's fingerprints on it. The boys had put a complaint with the lady SHO the very next day and the SHO arrested Minal after 7 days as she was completing investigation to establish the facts and then when she was ready, Minal was found missing.
Andrea is accused of following a friend of Rajveer's (Dumpy) into a separate room. Andrea is cross questioned by Deepak to establish that Andrea wanted to use the toilet. When she came out, the lights were closed, the door was shut & Rajveer's friend molested Andrea. This is the reason she took time to come out of the room. Dumpy claims that Andrea solicited him and that he is from a good family and has a girlfriend.
Next Falak is put on stand. She has a salary of Rs 40,000 and has a few loans and a "special" brother who requires medical care and attention. Prosecution contends that Falak is staying with a divorced professor, who is paying her Rs 25,000 per month for the convenience. Falak says these are loans that she had taken from the professor for her brother's treatment and had now started returning them back.
Prosecution also contends that Minal has her parents' house in Karol Bag & yet stayed in a rental apartment, as she wanted to carry out prostitution, which was not possible under her parents' eyes. Finally, Deepak examines Minal. Minal says that she knew one of the boys from school, who introduced them to Rajveer and Dumpy. So, the girls went with them. Minal says she attacked Rajveer as he grabbed her and was not letting go of her. She is cross questioned by prosecution as to why Minal went to the farmhouse or accepted drinks when she didn't know anyone in the group.
Deepak then cross questions the lady SHO. He proves at the night of the incident she was at a wedding & according to records to she drove 22 Kms in 10 mins to get to the police station to file a FIR of the incident in 2 lines. Deepak contends that the report was backdated by the SHO after Minal complained to the police. Then Deepak establishes in court that while Minal lost her virginity at 19 and has had sexual relations before, in our society this is considered to be a sign of being easy to get. Then Deepak makes the point that in each previous instance, Minal had consented to sex and had not exchanged money. In Rajveer's case, she had not consented and thus this is the whole basis of the case. Lack of consent.
Falak finally breaks under cross examination and admits that they took the money. But she asks the court that even after taking the money, Minal changed her mind and yet Rajveer kept touching her. So, who is correct.
Deepak puts Rajveer on stand who is irritated by the personal questions asked by Deepak. Rajveer constantly argues that girls from nice houses don't drink. Deepak shows a photo of Rajveer's sister drinking. This infuriates Rajveer who says in open court that women who go with strangers, and drink are called "Raand" and "Unke Saath Aisa Hi Hota Hai"..
Court finds Minal and friends not guilty and finds Rajveer and friends guilty of molestation and unlawful confinement.
