Slow.

Ernesto the police officer was the best part. Very real and convincing. The main stars were played too stoic. It's was like watching want to express better , but were being held back.

WORTH A LOOK
bnewman-8193811 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie starts off as a very close parallel to the 1999 Richard Farnsworth movie, "The Straight Story", in which he takes off across several states on his old John Deere riding mower to find his estranged brother. But, then, this movie turns a corner to tell a different story. There are a few problems along the way...a wheelchair battery that seemingly has unlimited power; a lead, wheelchair-bound character shooting her way across New Mexico (retired cop or not) without consequence; a New Mexico State Trooper who has no other duties than to serve as a taxi for the lead character, and an unattended church in the middle of nowhere, even though all the alter candles are lighted and burning brightly. The last half of the movie seemed to lose its power and momentum, the closer it got to the end. Finally, the ending was disappointing and weak. However, the movie still had some degree of an entertainment value.

O Rose, Thou art sick!
mjknott-8232823 August 2020
This movie could've used a little levity. I think that about a lot of these movies, even the sad ones. It's a shame when decent actors are handed a script that has more blank stares than dialog. More focus on the A-list actors and less of the B's would have made this worthwhile.

Slow but worth it
sue-0623920 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Rose is suffering from a terminal illness and decides to take a road trip, trying to repair her broken relationship with her son. An ex-cop, she swiftly deals with a potential mugger en route and eventually meets a cowboy played by James Brolin, who brings her some happiness.

James would have been 77 years old when this was made and he is still a fine looking man! Cybil Shepherd is mainly expressionless in this, which is a little irritating.

Pam Grier is good as a free-spirited woman she meets at a health spa, and Rose's loyal group of friends are really well played. Ernesto, a patrol officer who befriends Rose, is one of the best characters in it.

Not a great deal of action but worth watching.

Tried to Stay Awake - Slow and Unbelievable
66Batfan22 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Wow what a snoozefest. There were so many unbelievable things in this move to stomach. An elderly woman that has a electric wheelchair that evidently never runs out of power. A retired police officer shoots her assailant ... in the foot - never happen - then leaves before police arrives then does it AGAIN ..... jeez. The sub plot with her rehab son unhuh - he's changed - Yeah cause heroin addicts always get better quickly. The Brolin romance - he loves her after a few days ... the whole move is unbelievable - watching someone ride around in a wheelchair with a tent on top ..... spare me and save you time for a good movie.

Director's fault
indialm24 March 2019
I could not understand why Cybil Shepherd's character was so stiff and one dimensional until I read her interview where she said the director kept telling her to "do less" so the viewer could insert their own emotions. Well I am here to say it didn't work. The dialog was slow and stiff despite a good cast. There are plot holes so big that all the actors should have fallen through them. I really wanted to like this film, but it's just poorly made by a person who doesn't understand pacing or that a woman can't go through a movie staring without cracking a smile. You never grow to even like these characters. Pass this one up.

I get it
HumbleMensa26 August 2019
Everyone expects a normal, happy storyline. This is not that sort of story, but it has nice messages and a few warm fuzzies. It's a realistic drama about facing a stage of life, ups and downs. I liked it, even the off center way the story is told ...albeit slowly in a few spots. Cyril Shepard is good. Worth my time.

Depressing and Slow
sonrisaparatu10 January 2019
I wanted to love it because I like both Shepherd and Brolin. While it had some wittiness to it and uplifting aspects, it's slow and overall depressing. If you feel like wallowing in a depressed state, watch it. Hated the pace and the overall slow pace of it too. #Boo

Funny and heartwarming
katiefanatic-791-30691821 January 2019
Cybil shepherd stars as rose, a woman with an illness that sets out on road trip. It isn't clear until about halfway through the movie why she takes the road trip, but it's heartbreaking why. On the way though, there are tons of laughs to be had and a final romance to be experienced. This movie's ending isn't happy. In fact rose falls into tropes that make her character sometimes downright frustrating, but we also have to remember who we are dealing with here- a woman grappling with the end of her life. She's not exactly rational. As a person with a disability myself I really enjoyed this film, especially considering I saw it at a q&a with cybil shepherd and it was really funny to watch her talk about struggling with things we deal with all the time. No spoilers but you'll see the moments I mean. Great film.

I had hoped for SO much more!
itmeansflower14 June 2023
I admit that I watched this movie mostly because of Cybill Shepherd and James Brolin. Despite the varying reviews, I had hoped that perhaps it was one of those diamond in the rough films that only people who appreciate independent or more unusual films would like. Unfortunately, this is a movie that moves very slowly, and in the end is not at all satisfying.

For me, the main problem was that Cybill Shepherd seems to have forgotten how to act. I've seen her in other things, and really enjoyed her.

In this, however, she shows hardly any emotion whatsoever. Most of the time she has a completely blank expression on her face. And because she is the main character, I found it very hard to get into the story at all. I don't know if it's how she was directed or what.

In any case, my advice is to steer clear of this one.

The theme is a viable one...
graceoverpressure8 January 2019
-But it doesn't move the viewer, even those of us in the peer group of both Brolin and Sheperd. Mainly because Cybill Sheperd is "zeroed out" as an actress in the role and the daughter of Mac is churlish if not disingenuous. Cybill Sheperd, much as I like her normal zaniness? -Just doesn't fit the bill in this story of a dying woman...It leaves you feeling blah, if anything. Numbing movie at best when it COULD be so much better...

The story is unique however and one for our times, no doubt about that.

I just thinking the casting was misguided in the lead role and that of the daughter.

Loved this coming of age movie
msterrys20 August 2020
I could never understand how she kept the charge in her battery. What a beautiful movie. I admire Cybil Shepherd as the perfect retired cop. Somewhere I picked up there was an age difference between the love interests, but I did see it. Pam Greer it's great to see you again. And I relate always to Amy Madigan.

Ridiculous

I saw a preview for this and thought it looked cute, so I gave it a try. Boy was I wrong. The plot made no sense whatsoever. The acting was ATROCIOUS. Stupid boring sad movie.

It is a slow movie, but there is nothing wrong with that. Cybill Shepherd did an amazing job. This story was more true to life than a lot of them.

Needs a Director and script overhaul
gillyspirit31 August 2020
Although the cast showed promise, sadly the script and direction let them down. I've seen better Hallmark movies. Not believable. Backstory was missing which left me wondering why I should care about her journey. Chemistry just wasn't there between Rose and Max. She had more chemistry with Lily. Director wasted alot of film on wheelchair rides down the highway when he could have developed the characters.

Less is more.
misterybee22 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I just watched this movie and was blown away. There was such a touching reality to Cybil's performance. She had recently lost her beloved husband. Her adult son was a drug addict, lived elsewhere and had cutoff all ties with her because of a resentment he had with her concerning his father. She was ill, could barely walk and needed a wheel chair. She was waiting for her medical diagnosis, which she knew most likely would not be good. In the meantime life needed to be proceeded with and what became most important to her was to try to reconnect with her son. She was in a state of complete emotional overload and when too many intense emotions are all jammed up together, each fighting for precedence over the other, we can short circuit, shut down, become numb. She was a retired cop of over 30 years so had been trained and had learned to proceed into and through precarious situations mentally evaluating and assessing each step along the way. Her job had required her being non-emotional. So that was the default look on her face now: a cop proceeding into and through a precarious situation. She had overwhelming concerns on her mind that stayed with her each moment, no matter who she might be talking to or what she might be experiencing. Her resting face look allowed for the slightest smile, the slightest eye or facial movement, the most nuanced expression to SHOUT OUT what she was feeling or thinking. I think of Peggy Lee who, when young and just starting out, was singing in a nightclub full of famous people who were drinking and talking loudly and she realized that if she sang louder to try to be heard over them they would talk louder so they could hear over her, so she sang softer and they talked less loudly. She sang even more softly until all ears were soon on her and her voice was the only sound in the room.

The rest of the characters in the movie were basically props for Cybil to react to. The elder performers were very good. The younger ones were okay, their failing being they did the opposite of Cybil. They OVERACTED. Honorable mention goes to Pam Grier. What a delight to see her again and what a delightful character she created. I wanted her to be my friend and my next door neighbor. The movie is obviously a drama but along the way there are some really funny, fun and sweet moments. Cybil's encounter with a purse snatcher is a gem of a moment, TWICE!

Heartbreakingly honest.
peggysue42227 July 2020
Always admired Cybil for the "real" down to earth person she always seems to represent, with a little bit of orneriness thrown in! This movie is par for the course!! I don't usually watch movies twice but this one I'd watch again in a heartbeat!

Being Rose Becomes Your Friend
jdianahall4 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
You may not fully appreciate this film unless you have lived a lot of years and have lost a good friend like Rose. Rose is on a journey that we all must travel eventually. Cybil Shepherd plays the reluctant traveler who tries to repair her most important relationships. Her determination is admirable. Her friends' efforts taken on her behalf are also admirable. She accomplishes a lot, despite her limitations. In the end, I was quite happy to have known Rose who serves as a fine example for the journeys of the rest of us.

I was pleasantly surprised! This movie was very accessible. pulled all the right stings and was funny as well! I might have left out the addict son and replaced him with a special needs grandson for instance More warm and fuzzy so to speak. Cybill, if you read this, have your brother call me.,

Warning: Spoilers
This is a real life story filled with beautiful New Mexico scenery, first rate cinematography, down to earth storyline, excellent acting, and a real life ending. Hollywood, should take notice this is a wonderful and powerful human interest story that we can all relate to - you and old. Well done folks well done indeed. I started watching late and couldn't stop until I finished.

Deeply touching heartwarming movie.
