Arrow - S05E05 Human Target
j_forbesy3 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
In a week where Supergirl and Flash took a step down in intensity, I was expecting Arrow to do the same. But it didn't, and because of that, it shone brighter than any episode this season. I felt like last week's episode was their step back, just at the time I didn't know it.

This is by far my favourite episode of the season and I think a large part of that was because we got Diggle back. Diggle is by far my favourite character on Arrow and he showed it this episode. I really loved his scenes with Wild Dog. It was great to see Wild Dog pushing back against Diggle and Diggle just taking it. I've really missed the dynamic Diggle brings to the team and it was great seeing him back in action.

I thought the action was some of the best we have seen this season. There were so many moments when it got me excited just watching action scenes. I really hope that they keep up this intensity of action in the rest of the season because it made this season so much more enjoyable.

Something I think they did really well this episode was handle the political stuff. I'm liking how Oliver is starting to tackle it head on, and even though it wasn't actually him part of the time. I like how he is starting to make progress and and the effects of Mayor Oliver is really starting to show and its great.

I thought the flash backs were again great this episode. Not much happened in them but I liked how they tied in the Human Target, who I will touch on soon, and how he will be the thing that brings the flash backs into modern day relevance, something we have missed the past couple of seasons.

I really liked Human Target this episode. I feel like he is going to be a Constantine type character where we know he is out there and he could be utilised in the future. I'm interested to see if he will play a bigger part now that we know he was present during the Bratva era because I would really like that.

By far, my favourite scene of the episode was the final one. Everything from how it was directed to the sound, it had a cinematic and horror feel to it and I loved it. The way we saw Church, who I've loved as a villain and am sad he is no more, scared as hell really gave impact to this scene. On a side note, what Church was killed with looked oddly similar to the ninja star that Heatwave got in Legends.

Overall this was my favourite episode of this season. The inclusion of Diggle was this shot in the arm that Arrow unknowingly needed. As much as I'm disappointed that we no longer had Church, it was nice to see his story arc end and the bigger villain of Prometheus taking a more main roll in the plot.

Human Target/Season 5's direction
BBloomcamera9 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
It is amazing how good this show is at making each season totally unique from the others. I do love this show. But in comparison to the other seasons, it just seems like the character interaction between the core characters is seriously lacking in season 5. The interaction between these characters is what made each episode so good in past seasons and that interaction alone would make an episode exciting/emotional. The new recruits are taking some of that magic away. Then, Laurel is so missed, especially in the bunker but also in the field and even in the courtroom. Thea and even Lance are missed in the bunker. They usually have such priceless reactions to Oliver's actions/skills. In Human Target, it was a good episode but more could have been done to keep the intensity and emotion during the plot. With a Team Arrow member captured and being tortured and Oliver been the subject of an assassination attempt, this should have been a nail-bitter. But there were too many gaps between each scene to keep that intensity and emotion.

***spoiler warning***** The jump from Christopher Chance (as Oliver) getting shot in front of City Hall jumped to Lance and Thea at the press conference to another jump to Christopher Chance (as Oliver) meeting with Oliver in the Bunker left too much to the imagination and killed the intensity of the action. **end of spoilers**

If season 5 is supposed to bring the Oliver Queen story full circle, it was a disastrous mistake by killing Laurel. Season 1 was all about reconnecting with Laurel after the shipwreck, and I thought that was the focus throughout the other seasons as well, even though - it was not in a romantic capacity. Wasn't the point of the flashbacks for the other characters to one day find out what actually happened to Oliver on that island? Well, honestly, most of the characters (Moira, Tommy, Laurel) have been killed off at this point and never learned anything about the island/Oliver's five missing years.

Mission Impossible(ish)

"Human Target" does what every episode of Arrow probably should. Provide great action, introduce comic book characters and make their villain terrifying. The show made Tobias Church's (Chad Coleman) arc come to a fitting, dark end and began the introduction of an excellent villain, Prometheus. The face masks worn by the titular guest star also spiced things up.

Warning: Spoilers
Human Target surprised me in many ways. it was a great episode.

last season arrow really fell off the rails in terms of quality and story and action. there was no tension last season, it was all about felicity and her relationship with Oliver and her family. And to be perfectly honest I was not looking forward to season 5 at all.

so far the season has been strong and I have enjoyed it much more then last season. however this episode in particular really brought me back into the show. it was intense, it was fun, it had a great story, it was gritty and the characters had good dialogue and great developments.

the big bad makes his presence known in this episode. at the end of the episode tobias church has been captured by the green arrow and is been escorted to jail by a lot of police. this scene is great because the camera focuses on church whilst you hear screams of police officers outside. it creates tension and keeps you on the edge of your seat which is what season 4 failed to do. then we see Prometheus the big bad of the season. he warns church earlier in the episode that if church went after the green arrow he would kill church. well he lives up to that promise. in one swift move Prometheus kills church. this was the perfect scene because it showed us how ruthless Prometheus is and that makes us fear him which is something we have not been able to do since season 2. as Prometheus walks away from chruch's body we see about 20 dead police officers all killed by him. the introduction to Prometheus is perfect in every way and is the strongest point to this episode.

the action is great this episode. season 4 was a mess in every single way possible. this episode proved to everyone that arrow has potential to be great again. even felicity was good this episode.

if you gave up on arrow last season like me, I say give this season a chance. every episode has been strong so far and it feels like its going back to its roots like season 1 and 2. give arrow another shot.

Path to Redemption

'Human Target' was a pretty messy episode overall, but there were plenty of things to get excited about. Diggle is back, the conflict with Church is resolved, and Prometheus seems to be finally making his presence felt.

The episode's title is obviously in reference to the comic-book character of the same name, but he was hardly the focus tonight. Wil Traval plays Christopher Chance/Human Target and is an old friend of OliverÂ… or Diggle? Correct me if I'm wrong, but Diggle is the one who said "I know somebody" but the description for the episode states that Chance is an old friend of Oliver's. No matter, Traval wasn't given any real screen time to develop Chance. I had mixed opinions of him on Jessica Jones, so maybe it was best to keep him in the background.

Tobias Church provided the episode's main conflict as he had Wild Dog captured and tortured. For the second straight week, I have grown increasingly interested in his character. Rick Gonzalez clearly has acting chops, and I'm glad they are building out his character. Granted, he's making a ton of mistakes, but it's not like those mistakes are going unnoticed. It helped that he got to have some screen time with Diggle this week and it looks like that bond will continue.

Unfortunately, that screen time towards Wild Dog takes away from the time spent on others, like the rest of the team. It's funny, because this episode already felt overstuffed even without significant time spent with Artemis, Curtis, or Ragman (why the heck is he bullet proof by the way). Felicity got some of that screen time tonight as her dating Billy came to Oliver's attention. It was more than awkward watching him find out through the Human Target, but I actually believe the Olicity material this week was handled well. No, I don't believe they will date again, but I found their scenes together to be well- written and a necessary evil. Now if the show continues to focus on Felicity's new boyfriend or Oliver's jealousy, then I will address that when it happens. But there's no need to get mad at tonight's execution in that department.

Oliver also had his hands full in the mayoral department tonight with Susan Williams giving him a hard time and the lack of voting on a low- income housing issue. I enjoyed his dynamic with Susan, so it was unfortunate to see that it was basically all Christopher Chance's doing (masked as Oliver Queen). Really? This show really just pulled a Mission Impossible with that mask reveal? I thought we were going back to the more realistic and grounded take on the character?

I've been hard on this episode so far, but there are plenty of saving graces. The material in Russia nicely set up the reveal that Susan Williams now has some bargaining chips over Oliver. Prometheus knows who Oliver is. And I'm growing more interested in the new team with Diggle back on the table. I'll take what I can get this season.

+Wild Dog paying his dues

+Diggle is back as Spartan

+Susan & Oliver could be fun

+Prometheus knows

+Olicity was handled nicely

-Human Target not given a ton of time to do anything

-STILL way too much going on

-Mission Impossible mask? Really?

Thea, Chief of Staff? 😂😂😂

Yet another reason this show has fallen. Thea's background and lack of education would be a constant focus of the media.

This episode was a big disappointment
neeyoto3 November 2016
This episode was very disappointing , it didn't contain any good action scene and arrow is turning more into harry potter than it is a DC TV show. Oliver should have stayed dead when he fell off the cliff. The episode is called the human target because it targets us a people to be dragged into such a terrible episode. This should be the rating for this episode and I also think that arrow should stop because they are running out of ideas and it is becoming very boring. The other reviews are just people or bots who are out of their minds. Don't watch this episode just watch season 1 again because that is the only good episode. In conclusion don't watch this episode unless you want your eyes to bleed, watch season 1 or season 2 again because they are great.
