FilmLA has reported a strong first quarter as on-location film production in the LA region recorded 9,832 shoot days. The last time filming numbers were that high was in 2016, which reported 9,725 shoot days.
“The potential for another Covid-related cutback had us eyeing the first quarter with concern,” recalled FilmLA President Paul Audley. “But with strong protective protocols in place, the industry was in a good position to weather the post-holiday Omicron surge.”
Filming activity in the first quarter of 2022 increased by 40.2 percent over the same period in 2021. Though the pace of production slowed somewhat compared to the fourth quarter of 2021, industry output was much higher in early 2022 than it was in the prior year, when the spread of the Delta variant led to a voluntary filming hiatus that slowed production to just 7,011 shoot days.
The television category also saw an increase, up 18.7 percent over the same period last year to 4,470 shoot days,...

Film permit applications in the city and county of Los Angeles declined steeply in December, dropping 24.9 percent from November levels to 613 permits. FilmLA reported Tuesday.
This is the second straight month that FilmLA has seen permit requests drop, as production levels that picked up after the pandemic shutdown began to drop again. In November, monthly activity slipped 7.6 percent from October levels to 813 permits.
FilmLA spokesman Philip Sokoloski explained, “When production was allowed to restart last June, the majority of work that powers the greater Los Angeles economy didn’t start up right away. It wasn’t until September that we started to see some of the scripted television production work and feature work resuming.”
That accounts for the surge that happened in August when film permit applications rose 40% in August over July as location production restarts in the Los Angeles area amid Covid-19 restrictions.

The new owner of People magazine plans to adapt the entertainment and human interest magazine into a daily TV series set to launch in the fall on the company’s TV stations.
Meredith Corp., which acquired People through its Time Inc. purchase in early 2018, has tapped “Access Hollywood” veteran Rob Silverstein to lead the half-hour strip as executive producer and showrunner. The series will be “People-branded” but the formal title has not been unveiled. It will originate from New York and air initially on the Big Three network affiliates that Meredith owns in 12 mid-sized heartland markets.
Silverstein told Variety the series would mirror the venerable magazine that mixes celebrity and entertainment coverage with human interest and lifestyle stories. The breadth of People magazine’s coverage of pop culture, news and trends gives a TV series plenty to material to assemble a daily program.
“The magazine is so well respected for what they do now.

Unsolved cases dominate People Magazine Investigates Season 3.
Authorities found the body of Nanette Krentel, 49, in the smoldering wreckage of her home on Phillip Smith Road north of Lacombe on July 14, 2017. An autopsy conducted by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office revealed that Krentel died of a gunshot wound to the head, not from the fire. Her death was officially ruled a homicide. Two months later, the Sheriff’s Office ruled out her husband, Stephen Krentel, as a suspect. The case remains unsolved. People Magazine Investigates season 3 premiere hopes to change that.
Produced in partnership with People and Radley Studios, the 15-episode season People Magazine Investigates takes viewers to the "epicenter of America’s most compelling crimes," according to the official press statement.
In the premiere episode, “Somebody’s Watching,” Nanette Krentel is "found burned to death in her own home in St. Tammany Parish, La. Her husband and local fire chief,...

Meredith Corp. is continuing its overhaul of Time Inc.’s assets as it fully absorbs the acquisition of the iconic publisher, announcing what it calls a “new look, name and direction” of its in-house TV production company.
The shop, formerly Time Inc. Productions, will now be called Four M Studios. It will be able to draw on content emanating from Meredith titles, including key Time brands such as People and Entertainment Weekly, while also developing long-form projects independent of the magazine portfolio. When Mechele Linehan was convicted in 2007 as a conspirator in the 1996 killing of a man who’d once thought he was going to marry her, it looked like the crime was solved.
An Anchorage jury determined Linehan, a former exotic dancer, had persuaded a former lover, John Carlin III, to kill Kent Leppink, 36, a fisherman who lived with her and told his family that the two were engaged. At the time, Linehan also was involved with a third man.
But a 2010 appeals court ruling overturned Linehan’s conviction, leaving the case wide open.

Growing up, April Balascio says she always had suspicions about her dad, handyman Edward Wayne Edwards. He was obsessed with murder and detective stories and loved to ingratiate himself with the cops, inserting himself into local investigations wherever they lived.
Stranger still, Edwards would often move his family in the middle of the night without warning — Balascio’s first clue that something wasn’t quite right.
“Kids aren’t stupid,” she tells People.
But it wasn’t until 2009, as a 48-year-old mom of three grown children, that Balascio decided to look deeper, sure that she had to act on her nagging concerns.
