- Althea and John continue to argue. He eventually gives up, deciding that she needs to find a weaker man to punish. After he leaves, she phones Matt, thinking that Maggie must have gone back home because of the bad weather. Matt glances out the window at the storm which is growing worse. Still driving, Maggie tells the stranger with the knife that she's worried about the car going off the road as it's getting icy. When she further states that the road they're on is taking them out of town toward the country, he replies menacingly that it could be just what he wants. Nick and John cross paths in the foyer of the apartment building. Nick winds up John by suggesting that Althea rejected him again. John makes it clear that Nick is Althea's ex-husband; therefore, he has no privileges where she's concerned. He ends the conversation by saying that no further discussion of subject is needed because he and Althea have nothing to say to one another. Althea and Matt speak again and wonder where Maggie could be. Matt feels that Maggie won't return home and asks if he can wait at Althea's apartment. Althea's doorbell rings, and she's disappointed to find Nick instead of Maggie. Nick gives her a special note from Rico that was included in a letter that just arrived. He tells her about his encounter with John and praises the way she handled him. Althea refuses Nick's offer of a celebratory drink because she wants to wait for Maggie. Matt arrives and tells Althea about the events leading to Maggie's departure in the storm. Maggie's car skids and almost goes off the road. The stranger notes how well she handled the car. She tells him that she's from Wyoming and used to this kind of weather, but she worries because they're heading toward the mountains. It will be harder for him to get away in her car and harder for her to get back to town once he lets her out. With a gleam in his eye, he informs her that he's changed his mind. He's going to take Maggie with him.—Skip Eastport
