A little from the past...
andrewkiller9 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
We all know Supernatural had lost its original scary-like, mysterious touch. Well in this episode they seem to try hard to bring it back.

Forget the Season 12 plot(not entirely), "American Nightmare" brings back some creepy-like murders when victims are whipped to their death by something evidently invisible. We also get the old plot from the very 2nd season, the one about special kids, Sam being one of them. Then, out of the blue, it gives us a touch of the main Season 12 plot, which to my taste is some good old cold-blooded, creepy-mysterious Supernatural that doesn't care much about our feelings.

To sum up, for me it was a great episode even if they wanted to make it a filler, it reminded me a little of the old days while keeping up at the same time. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because it felt they rushed, trying to mix everything up in 1 episode, not explaining at all how that special kid rose or what's up with that guy(probably MoL) "finishing" the jobs.

Definitely worth watching!

Great episode, except ...

Warning: Spoilers
The ending was awful. (Spoiler alert) After seeing this poor girl get set free after years of abuse, only to end up a victim of Mr. Ketch, was a serious punch in the gut.

Good all around - with heavy foreshadowing
proudhotkin23 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode of Supernatural contains a pretty standard horror story of an ultra-religious and seemingly friendly family who is not quite like they appear - but the episode does it well with plenty of hearkening back to past episodes - reminds me of a mixture of s1 episode 12 - faith and season 1 episode 14 - nightmare.

We may find out in the end that this episode is skippable in a supernatural essential episodes binge like some other for-shadowing episodes of past seasons. Then again we may find out it play's an important part in Sam's story arc and certain events in the episode may be mentioned again when it comes to the Men of Letter's. Either way the episode was gripping and foreboding enough for me to recommend generally.

  • General Review - Small hints or SPOILERS:

We see some possible foreshadowing of a return of the psychics as a supernatural faction in the coming season or seasons and we also get some foreshadowing of what the British men of letter's are like and why they might clash with the more ideological Winchester brother's - who have different idea's about virtue and what doing the right thing is.

  • More detailed review with heavier hints / moderate SPOILERS:

I did not predict the ending of this episode. This episode made me care about this young psychic girl through Sam and through empathy with her struggle in the episode. There is one thing for sure to me. Sam made a mistake in assuming that she could just go and live on a farm and live a normal life as a young girl. People like her, and Sam can not live normal lives in the Supernatural universe. Instead of Sam giving her their number and telling her to contact him if she needs help he needed to be even more involved if he cared to make sure nothing could happen to her. Psychics are a feared and very important faction in the world of supernatural.

  • Detailed review with MAJOR SPOILERS:

It appears something did happen to her after Sam gave this girl hope and she was to be transferred to live with other family. A mysterious figure following Sam and Dean early in the episode and later showed up to kill her. We do not see the struggle but we see the end result. It is her lying on the ground in a pool of blood. Thus we assume she is dead. Since we did not see the actual struggle, I would very much like a reversal of this, that it turns out the girl was alive. That would be a surprise too. In that case I would add this episode to the list of ones not to skip in a story arc binge. I actually hoped watching that she might kick butt against who wanted to kill her and then call Sam and become a part of the roster of characters on the show to be guided by Sam and Dean's experience.

However instead the ending of the episode served as a foreshadowing of the inevitable conflict coming between the Winchestors and the men of letter's. They have very different ideas about what 'doing the right thing' is. If psychics are coming back as a faction, the men of letter's believe in eliminating them i.e killing them just as it was revealed in earlier episodes that they kill every supernatural creature considered a threat who enters Britain. This is not only vampires which was the example we had in earlier episodes for creatures for elimination in Britain. This includes psychics, who Sam and Dean consider people, as Sam was one himself. For Sam and Dean it is just wrong to take the life of a good person.

Since Sam foolishly left this girl to live the normal life he hoped for her ,leaving her with a simple phone number, what happens when Sam finds out the truth? That the men of letter's followed them to test what they would do about this psychic girl and to "eliminate" her when Sam and Dean failed to.

Human is good! Siblings are better!..

Warning: Spoilers
Sam and Dean find their way up to a farm in which a post-traumatic converted, religious family lives and their secret is a burden to bear!

This episode may not be of the original thoughts on this show, but it is good to see a story tying us to the first two seasons in an "old- fashioned way!"

The unfolding of the story was quite alright considering episodes that were "gone like a wind" the minute they started... without persuasiveness...

So, this one was real good for that matter, as Ms. Paloma Kwiatkowski played the role of a "psychic, innocent girl" so well that we even felt sorry after her death. Yes. She died!.. I'd like to see her again.

To the screenwriters; please stay on this track without holy graces or anything as "the human factor" makes the story relatable (as humanity is hard to comprehend for the most part) as well as inflicts much more fear in us!..

(I give this episode a "8,9". Yes!..)

We hate the British Men of Letters! Give the repentant / innocent a chance, you ivory tower residents!..

"Whoso bringeth (on the Day of Judgement) a good deed will receive tenfold the like thereof, while whoso bringeth an evil deed will only be recompensed but the like thereof; and they will not be wronged."

One of the stronger human "monsters" the show has done
CubsandCulture21 June 2021
This episode losses a few points because of how idiotic Dean is with the red herring in the case. But the religious family and especially the mother that this episode is built around are some of the most effective human villains the show has done; they are really plausible as characters. The episode largely flips the script on the supernatural-i.e the supernatural person is the victim- in an effective way. The writers have done this before-i.e. Gordon in seasons 2 and 3-but it is nice seeing this idea realized again. The show has an anti-clerical edge to it and this episode is one of the hardest hitting in that regard. It was also nice to see Sam's evolution on that point.

Great creepy feel and Dean's regression
shwetafabm26 July 2020
The atmosphere that was captured in the episode was really good, made me invested and made me care. This is a long running problem of supernatural since S7- Dean's character regression and development, sometimes it happens during the entire season and sometimes it happens per episode. It's simply annoying at times how clingy and unable to look at other's views he is. Also the message of toxic family love this series gives out, sure it is somewhat self-aware but in the end it always makes Dean's emotions as priority and makes everything work out in his favor, like Sam, who now wouldn't leave and thinks the same way, the "we always came back to eachother".

hate, really hate...

Warning: Spoilers
The uptight british men of letters, just where the heck do they think they get off killing an innocent girl ??? They have, well had, NO RIGHTS IN AMERICA, and thinking they are "better" NOT, they never met "god" or had angels with them both fig and lit, and were never brought back to life as Dean and Sam are more important than they are. To think they can come to some other country and crap all over Dean and Sam, who even had their mom brought back (ya know it hard on her as her babies in her mind are little)...so glad for fast forward as really hate the bmol, kick them back across the pond as their story does not belong, and that include the so called help by them... sorry ramblin rant, done.

Why?
hannahisaacs-6177512 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode sucked. Not only was it ridiculously boring but some of it made no sense. Having Dean hellbent on the fact that the CPS worker is a witch makes no sense and ruins his character development? We get it, he's upset that Mary left (which she shouldn't have), but there are other ways he can show it. Dean is one of the smartest hunters so having him push the witch agenda over and over again is so unlike him. Also, the fact that he thought he was right and didn't even think about if he was wrong. He was ready to kill an innocent person just because of Mary leaving?? That is not Dean AT ALL. There are so many other ways he could've expressed emotions that would've made sense. The family was creepy and the mom was seriously disturbed. This whole episode was just awful.

No, no, no and NO!
janedoe53003 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So, I let it slide the first time, but the second time Dean got all hell bent on killing an innocent girl because of a damn candle, I was done. I don't care about the rest of the episode, in fact I'm not even done watching it. After 12 years of building a character, you go and completely ruin his credibility like that, for what, to sell that he is pissed about mommy leaving? We get it, and even if we didn't, there is about a million other ways to show it. He's hurt, he's kinda regressing into the abandoned child role, he's bottling it up and taking it out on his surroundings, this is all Dean, and it's fine, it's believeable! But turning into a blood thirsty psycho, are you kidding me??? No, no, no and NO! This script is not worthy of Supernatural.

1/10, just for crapping all over a great, great character..

Why....?
SallyWilliams25 October 2020
....does every 2nd episode one of the boys get caught & stunned ? Even by amateurs.... This is so repetitive. Come on writers, you must bring some new ideas... The finale was intriguing though. The shape of things to come
