No big bangs but a lot of depth
katsg231223 November 2017
Some people have considered this a slow/boring episode, but I felt that this episode wasn't about the monster of the week but the characters. As someone who loves the characters in this show, I loved this episode as it added a lot of depth to the characters. I've re-watched this episode multiple times and I'm marking it down as one of my favorite episodes of the series.

Don't miss the reasons why this episode is good

Warning: Spoilers
A Hunter's Wake draws in Jody and the boys and of course trouble ensues.

Minor spoilers in this review: This isn't a big plot-arc episode. And it's also not a new and interesting monster case ep. It's not particularly big on the humour. So you might wonder why I gave this episode 7 stars? Well the answer is simple, this episode is full of great human-elements that give nice depth to the Supernatural universe. (1) We hardly ever get to meet hunters who aren't directly working with the boys, and I loved the idea of Hunters sitting around gossiping telling Winchester Legends. (2) We get nice insight into the depth of the boys relationship with Jody, how she has assumed a mother / moral-support role for the boys, and we love her for her reaction to the whole Mary situation. (3) The episode also gives a tiny bit more information on what's happening with Mary and how it's effecting the boys. As many of us are still trying to figure out what's going on in Mary's head. (4 - Minor SPOILER) There is also the moment where Dean magically dives through the door to save Sammy, causally rolls to his feet and says "where's my brother?", that scene was perfectly devised and perfectly delivered, showing our boys bond at its best. I had chills combined with a little squeal of glee. Conclusion? Not every episode can be big bangs and major story arcs but that doesn't mean that the odd episode that makes our beloved characters more 3D is not as equally important. I'm not saying that the episode was perfect, there were a fair few holes in the actual story with the Demon (a few time I shouted at the TV "Christo!" Or "What about your tatts" or "Come on its just a crossroads demon") but although that side of the story was sloppily handled in places, I felt it wasn't the point of this ep. So I will appreciate this story for what it meant to deliver: the human-element. And look forward to next week for more story-arc or better baddies.

It's a good episode
scottemigh29 July 2020
Episodes like "Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox" annoy me. It's like the late-season writers haven't even seen the entire show and have glaring gaps in their knowledge of the in-show mythology. We know that anti-possession tattoos are a thing. We know they work. Sam and Dean have them. Several other characters have them. So why, in a house full of hunters, does nobody have a tattoo? Why is a demon able to hop from host to host with ease? It seems like a pretty fundamental warding that every hunter should have. Still a good episode, if you approach it with some cognitive dissonance.

About as good as season 12 gets
CubsandCulture26 June 2021
I think the show put too much stress on Mary not adjusting to returning. This episode goes a long way to wrapping up that less than compelling storyline. Moreover, Mary's interaction with Billy really nails that she is a Winchester. Add in some nice Jody moments and a look at hunter culture (not seen in this way since season 2) and this is a fairly entertaining episode. If this was the worst season 12 got the season I could live with it. Alas it is the best season 12 gets more or less.

Writers, come on...
janedoe53008 March 2021
So Jody knew this guy Asa for "a couple months". "A couple" is technically 2, we agree on this right? In this time she managed to fall in love with him, apparently get REAL tight with his mom, know all his hunter friends, and she's hunted with them enough to warrant a "remember that Jody?".. Come on man..? How hard is it to write something plausible, like say; she knew Asa for a year and a half? This kept bugging me the whole episode. I expect more from the writers at this point, yet every now and then a detail is just plain stupid and illogical, and it ruins the episode. Like "a couple" episodes back, when Dean wanted to kill an innocent girl without any tangible evidence, just 'cause he was pissed at mommy. There are countless other ways to show Dean W is hurting, than to turn him into a homicidal maniac for an episode. It's too bad, cause both that episode and this one were otherwise very good. Put in some effort for those of us who care about details and plausible backstories, please?

Confusing
productjunkie764 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I am a fan of most episodes of the series and am now watching again from the beginning. This episode is confusing to me for a few reasons. One is that we see Asa get scratched by a werewolf as a kid but yet he still remains human? The other issue I have is that a bunch of hunters who should all have anti-possession tattoos got possessed. Anyone in that life should know how not to get possessed right? Even friends of hunters like Jody. I do enjoy Jody's character and how mothering she is towards the boys. At this point, I am still not sure how I feel about Mary. Billie just makes me angry because she is so intent on making sure the boys stay dead. She is one of the few characters that never really come around to being on the boys' side. Overall this episode is okay but not my fav.

A waste of time
blackmagpie-623682 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Not sure what the point of this episode is. Getting together a bunch of hunters who don't bother to protect themselves against demon possession is just weak writing and frankly they all deserve to die. No story line just another demon, no need for Billy to be there, rather pointless all in all. No character development to speak of, Sam is Sam, Dean is Dean and Mary is just Mary a bad mother overall simping around the place feeling sorry for herself rather than making up for lost time.

Asa... Asa... Asa...
blairlemmer28 January 2022
In this episode, there isn't a single new character who isn't annoying : from the mother who plays the diva to the two magician-nympho kids. And... Asa Fox, couldn't be more unlikable when we've only seen him in three scenes, but talking about him every 2 seconds to say he was awesome... it's annoying. Looks like a series from the 80s where we talk about Thomas Magnum's best friend from the distant past during the Vietnam war. Asa Fox : never seen, not interested !

It reminds me of when my friends would tell me about one of their "awesome" buddy and in reality he was a... jerk ! Asa Fox was a jerk, If he wasn't fictional, I would have killed him myself !

All the clichés that can be piled up while telling a story... in this episode: we can list them all ! I won't list them, because if you watch Supernatural, you're old enough to know them all.

Sorry for my lousy English, I'm not an English speaker, I tried my best, I tried not to be as offensive as I would be in my native language.

Dean saves Sam again
morrisonliz27 September 2020
How does someone the size of Sam get overpowered every episode but can knock down heavy locked doors with one kick?

If I watch one more episode where Dean has to save Sam in order for the spn to show what a badass Dean is I'm done.

A copy of exorcist
iroshank19 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I have been a die hard fan of supernatural. But so far this series has been an utter disappointment. It lacks a main story. Also why.. why did they copy that famous "head-spinning" act from the Exorcist..Are you worried about the new TV show??shame on you writers!! I thought last season was a good one.In fact episodes like 'Don't call me Shurley' gave me goosebumps. It was almost as good as Season 5 which we were given awesome episodes like "Swan Song". So as a fan I had been waiting so eagerly for season 12.But since the start, this season lacked main story and quality in story that they used to have.Add to those, they actually had to spin someones head like in "The Exorcist" and use dialogues like "All right,an exorcism,it ain't like an Angel Blade.". Why would you want to say something like that? It gives us the impression that writers are trying to imply that exorcism is something of a less importance and it begs the question? after all these years why a sudden need to discredit something? Is it because of the recent TV show? Writers please wake up!!Supernatural is Supernatual and you don't have be copy some other film or a TV show.It has been quite fascinating in it's own way. Please keep that on mind and please don't kill our favorite TV show..

Plain and boring
blackpoint18 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Well it's getting boring again as the first four seasons were. Actually i watched first season and quit it all together on the second and started again on fourth and just loved the season 6. The last 2 episodes, this one and the previous are more or less garbage to what we were used to and it seems that someone is lacking some good stories and writing. I especially don't like how they are trying to force some hacker title on Sam as it was obviously made before and it was just hilarious in the previous episode when Sam said i hacked the hard drive. Why would someone even need to mention that.. beside that i wonder how Sam hacked the drive in those 20 seconds as it must have been encrypted or not? Perhaps finding the drive letter is hacking for the one who wrote those lines. It's just going downwards with the story that's all and time to end watching on my side or just stop filming series all together, before silly and poor writing destroys what they'we built so far.

Good set up but fails
shwetafabm26 July 2020
I have always wanted to see more hunters, it started out fine but its too much of a soap opera, its directionless, Mary is fine, her character is fine, i just can't seem to care for any of this and Dean acting like Dean does all possessive has always irked me, and what is what the "in our blood" ws are family we sticl together nonsense, i feel like its such idk there used to be depth to this hunting or wanting a normal life thing, now its all empty especially on Sam's side. As for the main plot...these are a bunch of hunters and don't know how to handle stuff, the demon is this stupid too?
