Lee Galea was planning to direct this film after Monster Pies (2013) with Lucas Linehan as the lead, but instead filmed The Neon Spectrum (2017).
This is the first time a Lee Galea film didn't follow the alphabet. L, M and N was the first letters of Lee's first three films. Filterphonic was nearly called The Opposite of me, which would have carried that tradition with the letter O.
To save on money some of the actors wore their own clothing and some costumes from previous films made by Lee Galea were re-used.
In the film there is a local theatre group doing a musical adaptation of the film The Neon Spectrum, which was Lee Galea's previous film.
This is the first film Lee Galea has made where the DOP was not a past student from Footscray city films.
