An admirable attempt to synthesize cultural expression, to close what superficially looks like an unresolvable gap. Yet, in the end we see plausibility.

I discovered this documentary at an Anime North presentation. I was mesmerised at the dedication of these two artists into bringing traditional medium to popular art. The documentary is beautiful and inspiring.

Inspiration!
skepticalchemyst6 February 2019
I saw this on an airplane...don't miss it. This is a frank and compelling story of creativity combined with drive to excel. The doggedness of designer and carver and the view of the collaborative process is inspiring and salutary. I hope you enjoy it!

A Wonderful, Detailed Look at Creating Modern Ukiyo-e
josh-2508013 February 2019
I happened upon this documentary while aboard an airplane and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It goes into a lot of detail about the conception, people, and process behind Ukiyo-e Heroes, and follows the creation of one print from conception to completion, and even showcases some of the tools and materials used to create the prints, as well as the people behind those.

It was fascinating to see how these prints are made, and this documentary does a great job showcasing the skill, artistry, and attention to detail that is clearly required by the craft.

I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary, and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has even the slightest interest in Japanese art.

Fascinating!

As a graphic artist with 37 years involved in various forms of print I have to say this is a very passionate entry into the technique of Ukiyo-e. The documentary embraces this culture in many ways, not only the craftsmanship involved in the printing, but the use of traditional paper and inks is utterly fascinating.

I have recommended this film to former students and to anyone with a passing interest in Japanese print making,

The phenomenal thing is how the artists have incorporated modern popular culture into this craft. The film shows the passion and devotion of all involved and should not be missed!

Streaming on TV, but should be part of ANY art curriculum.

A Great Combination of Informative and Entertaining
lschmi-0046611 February 2019
I loved this even more than I thought I would(and I came into it expecting it really like it)! I've watched some of David's Youtube videos on how he's made some of their prints, but this documentary takes you through the entire process, as well as some history on woodblock printers, and even where they get all of their supplies. I didn't realize how much time and work went into each print, it's fascinating! I would highly recommend!

East meets West and tradition meets modernity
ritgig6 February 2019
Last time I was in Tokyo I stumbled upon a shop selling lovely prints in the Ukiyo-E style but of a subject matter that was quite foreign and quite unique. Instead of scenes of nature, Kabuki actors or geisha, here were two rickshaws racing, one drawn by a boy and the other by a turtle. As someone who taught video game design at a university, I should have recognized the video game on which this was based it it wasn't until I talked to the expat who made these prints that I made the connection. This film is a labor of love about a labor of love.

Captivating!
lobo-182776 February 2019
When Ukiyo-e Heroes first started to hit the market I was immediately excited as it combined my favorite art form with my favorite games. This deeper gimpse into the hard work and passion behind the art, including a fascinating exploration of the process by which the special paper was made is simply captivating.

A Surprising Collaboration and How it Came to Be
AoiChibi6 February 2019
Ukiyo-e woodblock prints are a beautiful art form with a history of centuries. This film on how two people, one in Japan and one in the United States over time came to work together to create a wonderful group of works based on games I enjoyed it very much and recommend it highly.

A great surprise found on flight TV!
liamomurchadha6 February 2019
Watched the documentary during a flight from Vancouver to Hong Kong where, as a fan of both Ukiyo-e and comic books, it caught my eye while perusing the flight tv offerings.

The documentary is very enjoyable (I watched it twice in succession) and I enjoyed it so much I booked a flight to Japan within days to go visit in person!

A great documentary about great art
tenpromos6 February 2019
I am a person who enjoys games and appreciates art. I have purchased several of the Ukiyo-e created in this film, and I love that this can give a better backstory to their creation. The old world tradition lends itself beautifully to the themes of the modern age. I highly recommend checking this out.

Bringing a traditional style to a new audience
eclapointe5 February 2019
The documentary does an excellent job of showing how the artists blended together two passions in order to create a truly unique and impressive series of works. It serves as an easily accessible introduction to woodblock prints that helps to leverage the familiarity western audiences have with video games to introduce them to a treasured part of Japanese culture.

amazing collaboration of technology and tradition
dvanderwatt-181795 February 2019
This is a perfect example of how when thinking outside of the box you can come up with such amazing new collaborations. Combining a digital product with an old traditional technique.

I saw this on a cross-Atlantic flight and looked up the site when I got home and ordered some prints. The quality is amazing and I just love seeing these framed prints every day.

For anyone that loves art, loves Japan, craftsmanship, dedication and the wonderfulness that comes out of friendship, I highly recommend this movie.

Check out their shop also! Prints are amazing!!

Amazing
bluefuze-799255 February 2019
I really love this. There's so little attention given to true craftsmanship these days, and I think it's great to have a documentary that helps combat that. Well done!

Having a set of prints, it was great to see the intricate details that go into creating the original art. You also get to learn about the history of ukiyo-e and how much work goes into making every piece to make the final product. A great blend of pop culture and traditional art! Go watch it!
