Possibly the most satisfying payoff to a story-line I have ever witnessed.
Better Call Saul has been building to the last scene of this episode for two and a half seasons. If someone were to watch the end of this episode without context, they might say that it was well performed, but in order to truly understand how masterfully this was executed, one has to have seen the long, drawn-out, suspenseful building of the relationship between the McGill brothers that has occurred over the last three years. The slow-burn setup of season 2 has finally paid off.

There isn't much about the episode to discuss outside of the phenomenal final scene, as the whole thing (as well as the whole show) was just one masterful build of gradually escalating tension, all leading to this moment that none of us could have predicted and yet we all saw coming.

The Payoff
goldmonster8 May 2017
This episode is what is called a payoff. For 2.5 seasons we have witnessed Chuck and Jimmy do their little dance. The last 15 minutes both lay their cards on the table and show their true colors. Most of this episode is in the courtroom and in a brilliant move Kim let's Jimmy cross examine his brother. Even though you knew Jimmy had something up his sleeve it will leave a smile on you face. Enjoy the drama. Enjoy the payoff.

Impeccable

An incredible episode, the best yet. Courtroom drama is always riveting when done properly and this one's impeccable. Great acting from Michael McKean in particular and the dialogue really zings. The whole thing just builds in quiet intensity until letting rip at the climax. Wow!

This is what we have been waiting for!!!!
krisgames-336669 May 2017
This, this is what we have been waiting for. Finally all the puzzle pieces fit together. All the exposition from season 2 makes this episode as perfect as it was. We get the confrontation we always wanted and it is done perfectly by the directors who make this as intense as possible. We also get a great opening scene that seems a bit too slow at first but as the episode starts to conclude, we understand how relevant and important the scene actually was. I have been waiting for a scene that actually presents the skills both brothers posses in law and we also get that in this episode. There are some characters from BB who are beautifully implemented into the scenery. At last,we have one of the greatest conclusions to a TV episode ever. The acting is very good on both sides and the setting seems realistic. At the end, we get better call Saul's best episode and one of the greatest episodes of a TV series I have ever watched.

masterfully done.. Best episode so far
kyrross10 May 2017
There is more action in this courtroom than in all the Michael Bay movies combine. What an episode! Finally, we witness the awaited confrontation between the 2 brothers, and it was amazing. Masterfully directed, the pacing was incredible, the actors were perfect. With this one, Better call Saul fully deserve the attention it gets and goes toes to toes with Breaking Bad quality.

Speechless!

What we watched was the greatest court room scene ever. I've always been a fan of legal drama but my oh my, a legal face off between our favourite lawyer Jimmy and his ungrateful prick of a brother was so tense and exactly what we've been waiting for all along. Gripping, tense, shocking revelations being made, it's just one of the greatest hours of television.

Satisfaction!
Hitchcoc23 May 2018
I was happy to see that this entire episode revolved around the hearing relating to Jimmy's potential disbarment. Jimmy gave Chuck every opportunity to be civil to him. Instead, fundamental hatred oozed from him. Chuck was forced to deal with the idiot disease (psychosomatic) that he thought he had. For most of the series, Jimmy was there for Chuck and did his bidding. In a couple cases, Chuck was hospitalized. Jimmy went to bat for him despite being submerged in his brother's ingratitude.

Darn fine acting in the clash of the McGill brothers

Warning: Spoilers
This episode proves how hard and complex it is to take your time to develop a story arc over multiple seasons and how rewarding the final climax can be. Not only once was I a little annoyed by the slow burning of the "Jimmy & Chuck" story line. I found the "Mike & Gus" stuff from the last episodes a lot more interesting.

Man, was I wrong. After the last episode you wondered how Jimmy would weasel himself out of the mess. And then we finally witness how cleverly Jimmy turns his brother's trap against him. Thanks to Bob Odenkirk's portrayal we also see how it hurts him to destroy his brother in front of his boss and ex-wife.

For me the greatest revelation was the acting of Michael McKean. During Chuck's breakdown the camera moves closer and closer to the actor's face and he manages to hold the tension, every nuance is perfect and utterly believable. The best acting on TV I saw in a long time, absolutely award worthy.

A perfect work of art
nicofreezer8 April 2021
Vince Gilligan is a genius like no one else today or in the last 20 years. When I first Heard some fans calling better call Saul better than Breaking Bad Laughing but man oh man this show is Amazing. One of the best show in TV history, In my Book Breaking Bad still is above but its way Closer than what I though.

And This episode is a masterpiece from A to Z, the second best episode of the show. Mckean is an Incredible actor and so are the all crew.

Best show, of the last 10 years. You have to come back to The X files and Breaking bad to witness such greatness in Writing..

A long-earned payoff
kylamb8 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was a risky, yet carefully crafted episode that could have bombed. The show was reminiscent of Breaking Bad's season three episode, "The Fly," which was a self-contained bottle episode meant for exploring emotional character depth.

This episode did much the same for Better Call Saul. Not only did the last five minutes of the courtroom scene eviscerate Chuck's vendetta against his brother, it put a bow on 2 1/2 seasons of a slow boiling arc and simultaneously proved that Better Call Saul is its own show. For sure, this show has been heating up as it evokes Breaking Bad nostalgia all over this season with the criminal element being introduced, but in one big bang this episode gave us Saul Goodman thanks to a tremendously written script.

This slow paced episode is not for everyone, especially given its biggest set of fans is due to the faster, suspenseful Breaking Bad. But critically, I'm impressed with how masterful this episode was. Now Saul has been born and this was a great sendoff to Jimmy.

SOOOO Overrated
haroldareynoldsIV10 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A 9.8? LOL! That has to be a joke. More proof this is the most overrated show currently and one of the most overrated ever. A 9.8 rating?

So the episode was good, like an 8. But because it's overrated, I'll give it a 7 to keep it real. Big deal- it was a good episode but one that was so predictably coming and had to come. It's not really a shocker or "the best payoff" like ever some are saying.

Brilliant Denouement, Can't Wait for the next one.

Warning: Spoilers
This was the best TV episode I've watched ever. Dare I say it, even better then the Breaking Bad Finale, on account of it being more cerebral. I thoroughly agree with what everyone else has posted here, Gordon Smith is a genius (and his collaborators of course). I was surprised about the battery. I was expecting either the receptionist or the planter to ring Charles on cue from Jimmy, thinking that he had dropped a phone in his pocket, but on consideration what actually happened was better, as it added another component to the scene and we could bask in the full horror a little moment longer.

For those who were complaining about the 'boring' episodes, I guess this pay off was a punch in the face of you all ha ha. I'm not saying the writing of BCS is perfect, yes it have a feel plot holes and it is a bit slow sometimes but when all the knots tie together it all make sense! Just saw the episode and I'm still shaking as I write.

Warning: Spoilers
Legalistic minds, petty con men and hypersensitive writer-poets alike should continue their viewership feast unabated with this episode, savoring as it does like a cherry or sprinkles on a towering spiral of binge-watcher's Reddi Whip.

A personal favorite moment here comes around 43:13 where Bob Odenkirk says "Yeah, I do" but with Bob McKean's voice-over. It's a subtle "Gotcha" moment in a series full of small, medium, large, extra-large, plus a few gargantuan-sized "Gotcha" moments.

What a Payoff!
animositisomina3514 May 2017
This is the episode that most of us have been waiting for! I know a lot of people have been frustrated by the slow pace of the show but it's worth it for an episode like this.

The writing, acting, etc. are all top notch in this episode. The opening with Chuck, his ex-wife, Jimmy seems out of place until the end of the episode. The showdown between Chuck and Jimmy is epic. It's the culmination of what I've been looking for since the end of Season 1. I can't wait to see where the show goes from here? So many possibilities and I can't wait to find out!

A Master Class in Writing and Acting
sdavid-416605 September 2022
The template for this amazing episode's courtroom drama was the famous court martial scene in The Caine Mutiny, where defense counsel was able to win his case by making the ship's captain appear mentally ill, even though he was not the one on trial and psychiatrists had testified he was totally sane.

In the BCS episode, Michael McKean's outburst and disintegration under cross-examination echoed Humphrey Bogart's in The Caine Mutiny, with identical results.

BCS is one of the finest dramas ever shown on television - if not *the* finest. Better than Ozark, The Wire, The Americans, dare I say even better than The Sopranos, and way better than Breaking Bad.

I am NOT crazy!

I know he swapped those numbers! I knew it was 1216. One after Magna Carta. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just - I just couldn't prove it. He - he covered his tracks, he got that idiot at the copy shop to lie for him. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He's done worse. That billboard! Are you telling me that a man just happens to fall like that? No! He orchestrated it! Jimmy! He defecated through a sunroof! And I saved him! And I shouldn't have. I took him into my own firm! What was I thinking? He'll never change. He'll never change! Ever since he was 9, always the same! Couldn't keep his hands out of the cash drawer! But not our Jimmy! Couldn't be precious Jimmy! Stealing them blind! And he gets to be a lawyer!? What a sick joke! I should've stopped him when I had the chance! And you - you have to stop him.

copying genius ... is still genius
A_Different_Drummer6 August 2017
The template for this arc is Inherit The Wind, considered as one of the top 10 best courtroom dramas of all time.

But copying genius is still genius.

The Spencer Tracy movie dealt with issues of religion. This deals with issues of morality. Difference? Not much.

The audience, the characters, pretty much know what happened "factually." But the law is an odd animal. It is man's attempt to grasp at something greater than himself. Messing with evidence is wrong. But using the law to get back at your brother for a lifetime of perceived wrongs is no better.

Also the way the producers set up entire episodes with flashbacks that initially make no sense is becoming almost a trademark.

Brilliant. Just brilliant.
