Deeply Felt Incomprehensibility
boblipton10 July 2020
John Arlott and Ralph Richardson narrate this short film about a test match at Lord's..... that most incomprehensible of all. games cricket. And yes, I include baseball, golf, curling and tossing the caber. I've read P.G. Wodehouse's early Public School novels, full of cricket and football, and had to get through those closely detailed games, telling myself that baseball is weird too. It is, but not as weird as cricket.

So, lots of shots of men throwing a cricket ball, lots of shots of men sewing the balls, and building the bats. Arlott's narration is stolid and precise. Richardson's is poetic. I suppose if you can't explain something, talking pretty is a good strategy.
