Not What I Expected

I looked forward to watching this movie because it has Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott. I love both actors. I didn't get even 10 minutes into the movie when I realized they are perpetuating elder myths that elderly people are out of touch with the world. As an elder female computer tech, I was offended by how incompetent they made Katharine Ross look. I find that disappointing. The current bunch of elderly did grow up with tech and, while there are some that aren't "techies", most of us are at least familiar with the names DOS through Windows 7. Then some of us can fix a PC, Mac or Linux machine, too.

The same thing happened when I tried too watch Book Club. Within the first 20 minutes of the movie, I was so offended that I could scarcely even finish the movie much less enjoy it! Hollywood, movies that make elderly people look like fools offend those very elderly that you want to watch the film! As an elderly woman that is a certified computer tech, I know that even the oldies that aren't knowledgeable aren't as bad as this. I know a lady that's 103 that gets around her computer just fine. All she needs me for is to do the maintenance on it. I couldn't find enough redeeming things in the movie to warrant finishing it.

I watched this solely to see Katherine Ross. The story is about the relationship that develops between a computer illiterate older woman and the young man who comes to teach her about computers. It appears to have begun as a play and it certainly feels like a play despite attempts to open it up. The first scene between the two principals has all the hallmarks of a first act as they are the only ones we see. Ross is given dialogue that makes her character resemble someone suffering from dissociative identity disorder. And her co-performer has little charm. Ross deserves a better movie.
