- Toni tells a visiting Carolee that she made her mother out to be a warm, caring person, but it backfired because now Billy wants to find her. She has an idea about contacting the musician's union in an attempt to locate Billy's natural father. Adam Reynolds tracks Carolee down at the research lab and requests a meeting with her. Maggie alerts Matt that John has returned, but Althea doesn't know that Nick hit him because John accused him and Althea of spending the night together in Greenville. She also warns Matt that she thinks it would be unhealthy for Karen to return to Hope Memorial permanently. Matt stuns her with the news that he already told Karen she could stay. When Maggie reacts, he reassures her that she's seeing flames from a dead torch. Later, Matt deals with John, warning that he doesn't want another recurrence of fighting with Nick. Against Matt's wishes, John offers an explanation of the fight, and unaware that Matt knows the truth, John lies about the reason. Carolee explains to Reynolds that she and Jason failed to change Steve's mind. She offers to testify to the grand jury on Steve's behalf, but finds that she can only testify during the actual trial, which seems inevitable. Speaking with Carolee, Reynolds realizes that only someone with medical knowledge would have known how to murder Dan by shutting off the vasopressor and cardiac monitor alarm. Carolee says that she can't think of anyone at the hospital with a motive to kill Dan, but armed with this new lead, Reynolds immediately phones Matt.—Skip Eastport
