As with Conan-Doyle, Wilkie Collins sometimes pushed the laws of science and medicine (along with the supernatural). This final episode involves an experiment to recreate the night of the theft by using laudanum. While it is entertaining, it does pretty much stretch the realm of science. We are introduced to a new character, a doctor who is, himself, addicted to the opiate. He is quite fractured. We also find out that the motives of characters are more down to earth after we put that aside. I did get a kick out of this. I do plan to reread the book sometime soon.
