During the Winterfell feast scene, when Tormund is speaking about Jon riding Rhaegal, a modern paper coffee cup could be seen near Daenerys. The coffee cup received considerable news coverage and social media discourse, dubbed "CoffeeGate". Many news sources incorrectly stated it was a Starbucks cup, it was actually from the Belfast, Ireland coffee shop Paper Cup. HBO confirmed the next day on Twitter that it was an error, stating "The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea." By Tuesday morning HBO updated their OnDemand and streaming platforms with a new version of the episode with the coffee cup digitally removed, and confirmed the new version would be used for future airings and home video releases.
Just before the post-battle funeral pyre begins, Sansa places a Stark pin onto Theon's chest plate, honouring Jon's words from Season 7, "You're a Greyjoy and you're a Stark."
The drinking game that Tyrion plays with Jaime, Brienne and Podrick is similar to the party game 'Never have I ever...' , which he already played with Shae and Bronn in season one's Baelor (2011). Just like Bronn, Brienne correctly guesses that Tyrion already had a wife before Sansa, in reference to the horrific Tysha story told by Tyrion in 'Baelor': Tysha was a peasant girl whom Tyrion married, but Jaime later told him that she was a prostitute who was paid to do seduce him. Tywin then had Tysha gang-raped by his guards, to teach Tyrion a lesson about marrying a low-born without his permission. The last indirect mention of Tysha happened in The Bear and the Maiden Fair (2013): while discussing Shae, Bronn sarcastically told Tyrion "How did marrying a whore work out for you the first time?" The mentioning of Tyrion's first marriage here is treated as a light moment, surprisingly by Tyrion himself as well, but he may have made his peace with it, in the light of him taking revenge on his father and all that has happened since. This is in stark contrast to author George R.R. Martin's then-published novels, where Jaime later confesses that Tysha was not a whore (Tywin forced him to say that), and that she genuinely loved Tyrion. This knowledge becomes Tyrion's main motive for killing Tywin, and afterwards he vows to find Tysha again.
Many fans pointed out that Jon's voice sounded different when he was giving the eulogy of the fallen. It should be noted that Kit Harington does put on an accent for Jon Snow, and during that scene he is projecting his voice quite intensely which, for actors, can make it difficult to maintain accents or voices. As such, Jon's voice becomes deeper and his accent wavers slightly.
The first time any direct interaction occurs between Sansa and Sandor "The Hound" Clegane since Blackwater (2012). He reminds her that he offered to take her to Winterfell in that episode, and that she still had difficulties looking at him then. He also heard she was "broken in rough" (Ramsey raped her during their wedding night in Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken (2015)), but she assures him that Ramsay got what he deserved by means of "hounds" (Battle of the Bastards (2016)).
David Benioff, D.B. Weiss: the showrunners/writers have cameos in the banquet scene as wildlings. They can be seen standing in between Ser Davos and Tormund while the latter makes a toast to Jon.
