"Das Mädchen vom Änziloch" tells the story of a young girl on a mountain farm in Switzerland, who desperatly longs for a friend and finds him in a boy from town, who shows increasing interest in a supposedly haunted valley. When he leaves and doesn't come back, the girl decides to face the challenge on her own.
Most of the time this documentary is basically the story of a young, lonely girl that is caught between the hard life on a farm and the beginning of puberty, alongside a growing interest in boys and adventure. At times the cut is a bit exhausting, especially in the beginning it wasn't easy to follow the plot, because it isn't established in the first place. On the other hand it was fascinating to see the challenges a young girl has to face under these circumstances, the believe in the superantural among the adults and to see a girl emancipating herself from a boy and conventions. Personally, I'm not a big fan of editing certain things into a documentary, but that's rather a question of style.
All in all there are surely bigger stories and more thrilling documentaries than this one but it is carried out professionally and it does follow a story that's worth being told.
