It's a goddamn 11/10 !!
ahmedali-0218212 April 2020
I mean to be honest when I first heard that a remake of this masterpiece was in the works I thought it would be a little tricky to live up to our expectations. But man I was in for a surprise! The game is flawless, I almost cried when I first heard the remade battle theme & the mako reactor themes. The combat system is way better than I expected, the characters are as fantastic as ever. As for the graphics, it's easily one of the best looking games ever made. So even if you haven't played the original, or any final fantasy games, get this played, you're in for one hell of a ride!!

Fantastic experience that does not disappoint
P9710 April 2020
What a phenomenal game, without a doubt the best final fantasy since x or xii depending on your taste (xiii trilogy and xv were equally flawed)

The graphics are so detailed and breathtaking, the music so moving and emotional as you would expect from a ff game, the combat also really improved over xv and it flows really well with the music, now it's not flawless and you might get a texture pup in every now and then which is alright for a game this big and it can easily be fixed with some patches.

All around this is a beautiful love letter to final fantasy and vii fans and even though the story is not complete, the game is up to 35+ hours with the side missions and you'll get your money's worth so don't hesitate to get this gem of a videogame.

15 years of waiting...and it delivers!

We all remember where we were in 2005 when the PS3 tech demo was shown to the world and we were all teased with something that few ever imagined would become a reality. Here we are, April 10th 2020, and the remake of Final Fantasy VII is a reality!! The graphics are stunning, especially if you have a 4K tv, and the gameplay is fluid and fun. I must admit that the goosebumps hit pretty hard once those first notes of music played over Aerith's face(and what a gorgeously rendered face it is!) and it felt like 1997 all over again!! Thank you, Square Enix!!!!

I can't stop smiling...
dvandenbrandt18 April 2020
I am a die hard fan of the original FF7 game, so I was both thrilled as well as nervous about this remake. I mean, how can you top one of the best games ever made? Also, how do you manage to satisfy the lovers of old school 'turn based' action, as well as the next generation? Well, they actually managed to pull it off! Not just in terms of gameplay or graphics, but also the effort to go much more in depth with each character and side character. I am truly impressed by the creativity of the developers, who managed to stay true to the original plot, as well as surprise those who know the story so well.

Although the story only covers the Midgar part, FF7 Remake has all the characteristics of a full game and much, much more!

Don't read if you have not finished

Warning: Spoilers
The game is a fantastic re-imagining of the classic with many changes that I really did enjoy. Though I would have claimed it impossible, I found Tifa and Aerith to be much improved characters. That being said I found Barret, who once was my favorite, to be somewhat annoyingly idealistic and kind of one dimensional. Cloud and Red 13 have promise as both seem to be slower in development, but I look forward to the payoff.

The battle system takes a little to get used to, but is very very good. In the original you could allow your build to over power the enemies. In the remake brute force wont always win. Learn early to block, dodge, counter, and stagger.

The "end game" feels a little strange as it is a chapter based replay system. I always like a free roaming end game where I can change the members of my party with a new game+ option. Ohhh and one where I can use items.

Now for the lingering whispers and the alternate reality. The whispers change this from a remake to an alternate reality in a style like the Star Trek re-imagining. A world where we are left wondering if Aerith will still die. and if Zack will be a playable character or have events turned him into an antagonist. The main questions though are how did Sephiroth see his impending failure and demise, and will we be left feeling strangely disappointed by the possible removal of one of the most meaningful deaths in video game history?

Stunning and perfect
little_fern11 April 2020
This game is absolutely stunning in every way. I'm so deeply impressed by it. Incredibly immersive, to the point where I forget I'm actually playing a game. I love all the new content and side quests. It really just adds to and enriches the game and story. Playability is also flawless. The materia, limit, weapon upgrades, etc are all very easy to understand. I feel like replayability is going to be very high with this game; at least for me!

A Treasure for your Eyes, Ears and Heart.
pboultonlear14 April 2020
The original game means so much more to me than nostalgia- as it does to many people. When the original released there were not many games of its scope, its wackiness, its maturity or its willingness to play with themes ahead of its time. Needless to say I was worried square would mess this up after FF13 and FF15 (at release). I was even tempted to not preorder after having my faith in the series shaken since FF12.

Needless to say (as my opinion is in the title)- but this game is incredible. I will be replaying this game for a long time.

Without ruining anything- yes- it has changed things- but only for the better. Elements that needed fleshing out have been- there are no unnecessary elements (only side quests/mini games if you want them) and the finale is absolutely outstanding.

From a graphical standpoint, never have I felt so happy to have invested in a pro and a 4k tv- and this is from someone who thought that when I played God of War. It is breathtaking in every section.

The soundtrack is, again, incredible. From the intro to the outro I found myself occasionally just amazed with how well this game all fits together- and the music is the glue- I will be downloading it after writing this review. The voice acting is absolutely amazing, even from third party characters of passers by- there is nothing that annoys me more than screechy terrible voice actors constantly yabbing as you wander through an area- but in this they all talk about relevant (game) world matters and its really interesting to catch some of their conversations.

The gameplay (especially battling) has the welcome element of challenge and a really decent variety- in normal and hard. You have to actually consider equipment, skills and materia in this. It is not a button masher. There is plenty of choice of approach too- not just one method to beat someone or something- as well as varying small elements through player choice though we all meet many of the major story beats. I would akin it story path wise more to uncharted 4, than to say the Witcher- there is player choice and an interesting world to explore- but it is not open world. The story is amazing. Thats all im saying about that.

For those as familiar with the original as I am then there are so so many small and large elements to kick up your nostalgia. So many. I absolutely loved seeing what was a 2D painted environment brought into a living breathing world. Finding all it was super fun- and I am replaying now.

All in all, it is as my title says, an absolute pleasure for your eyes, your ears and your heart. If you had lost faith in square like I had started to- then please give them a chance- you wont regret it.

The story holds true.
atkinsonryan-7031117 April 2020
This game is technically perfect, (albeit the occasional camera issue) and it holds true to the story the original wanted to tell but couldnt. Its a wonderful tribute to the original and leaves the sense of a huge promise that has yet (but will) be fulfilled in the future. We believe in you Kitase and Nomura!

With praises that send the rocket into outer space! -Anon

Everything We Have Wished For, And More!
totoj18 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Not going to lie, when I heard that the game was going to be split into different parts, I was kind of disapppointed. However as I started playing, it was clear why that needed to happen. This game was packed with 100x more content than the original! There was no way they could have fitted everything into one part!

Anyways, here's three that was great about it for me! The game dove much deeper into each character's personality, story, and the dialogue between each character really showed the different relationships each character had to each other. This made it a lot easier to relate to the different characters, especially the side characters such as Wedge, Jessie and Biggs.

The chemistry between Cloud and Tifa, Jessie, and Aerith made the game more interesting, and added the right amount of romance into an action packed game. Even if Cloud had a personality of a potatoe XD. The slight curiosity between the three girls about Cloud's relationship status was remarkable. The flirting from the females definitely made the game feel more alive! They really thought this one through!

Now, the ending, OH BOY, THE ENDING! (POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD, STOP NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED AND DO NOT WANT SPOILERS!) This was totally unexpected and was such a great surprise for me! Throughout the whole game, I was secretly wishing that something like this would happen. I kept asking myself, "Wonder if they could change the ending to this game? Take a different direction with some of the things that will happen in this game." BUT, told myself, "there's no way they would do that, they already set the future of this game in FF7 Advent Child, that's how it's going to end." When the ending hinted at the change that I secretly wanted for the game....CHILLS, LITERALLY CHILLS.

Honestly, I can't believe how much work Square Enix have put into this game! Can't stop thinking about this game, it feels like the time that I watched Avengers Infinity War, and have to wait a long time for Avengers Endgame. Cannot wait to see where they will take this in the next part that will come out! Just....please make the ending as good as Avengers Endgame, and not like the last season of Game of Thrones ;) XD.

Played the original 13 times and this made me shed too much tears. So good
timario_toshihiko15 April 2020
Most faithful remake I ever played. I loved each part of it. It made me giggle to see the little nods and reimagination of things. The little additions makes sense and not just padding. The ending isn't bad but just felt like an OVA of an anime without changing a lot of stuff. Lots of time this game made me cry. This is absolutely beautiful. Part 2 soon please square!

Honest Opinion on the Remake of the Game that Made Me a Gamer
dlinderman-5544819 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
First and foremost, in 1997 little old thirteen years old me played Final Fantasy VII at a friend's house and was hooked. In an era where Google wasn't something you could use to look things up, I learned every bit of the game and how to accomplish everything. I've played it through countless times, so my opinion at least should hold some weight on this.

Remake is, visually, what I always wished it could have been in the 90s but never believed gaming would ever get to. The gameplay mechanics in battles felt very smooth, and even the slowdown when navigating the battle menu for spells or uncontrolled party members didn't break up the intensity of those fights. That said, some of the battles seemed to throw unneccessary challenge too often, one enemy in particular drove me nuts by not only flying all over the screen, but also being immune to physical attacks until using magic on it and then vice versa. It's fine but when there's multiples of them freely moving around it can be easy to lose them or get disoriented and it felt too grindy. Even so, the battle mechanics overall felt fantastic throughout the game.

Some areas of the game felt too dragged out though. And not the ones you'd think. The chapters with side quests didn't bother me, even though some of them were hopelessly dull (I'm looking at the cats and tracking down kids ones in particular) but most had charm. No, areas like the train graveyard and Hojo's lab felt terribly long, and not in a fun way. I'm glad they added depth to areas from the original but it was obvious they did those two in particular to shoehorn another boss in at the end of each.

From a narrative perspective this did a phenomenal job of filling in gaps, retelling the story well, adding small hints of taking from the Crisis Core PSP prequel game to further story telling, and adding in things to make some of the original games actions make more sense. Shinra pegging Avalanche as part of a conspiracy with Wutai to gain the people's trust was a good example of expanding on something small to make the story flow better. Seeing Aerith go to get Marlene and showing us how she got her to safety was much better than the originals off screen moment followed by Tseng and Aerith showing up in a chopper minutes after climbing the pillar. The pillar coming down and the characters reactions were more impactful than in the original because you spend time with the people of Sector 7 prior to it.

Then there are the "whispers". That's what I'm not a fan of. The explanation that they're a manifestation of destiny meant to ensure certain events play out a specific way felt like a very cheap way to push characters in a particular direction throughout the story instead of writing more sensible scenarios and was in far more ways a cheap way to give the Midgar portion of the story a more grandiose ending than it needed. To have to basically go into a pocket dimension to fight against destiny and Sephiroth just because you're cutting off the Remake into parts and wanted to show fan service to the originals ending and shoehorn a Sephiroth fight in was jarring because it never felt natural in the narrative (not that it wasn't fun to play because it was).

The additional scenes for Hojo gave him much more substance as a character who in the original (and prequel) was quite important but never felt that way from the little screen time. It's clear in this version that he knows who Cloud truly is, and that addition into this remake helps cement the prequel events as well because Hojo was essentially responsible for Cloud being as he is.

The worst transgression of this title is not allowing us control over Red XIII in the game. I understand their thinking was to not get us attached to using the character when he enters the story so late, electing to hold off on it until the next installment, but for such a fan favorite character to be there and not controllable was still a massive disservice. It's bad enough the scope of this project is so large we have to wait for installments, but in a portion that involves one of the beloved characters why prevent us from using him ourselves even in a limited way? Felt wrong.

Overall, the remake was outstanding, it's clear they want to stay as close to the original as possible in this remake. There are tons and tons of tiny nods to small trivial things of the original that many people will miss. They're clearly doing justice to their prequel story to make everything come together in the remake, even if those nods are small. The characters are far more likable, have a lot more depth, and the combat is a joy. Aside from a few overly long segments, the lack of control of Red, the whispers and destiny, and the unbalanced use of Sephiroth this early into the narrative, the game is amazing and a must play for any fan or anyone wanting to get into it the first time.

However, I still have to only give it a 7 out of 10 for the reasons above. They don't take away from the amazing quality of the game, but they do hurt it at times, and it would be irresponsible for me to blindly give it a 9 or a 10. I highly recommend it regardless.

I do worry about the future installments. If Midgar was this massive, what happens when they let us out into the world... I hope this project is not too ambitious.

20% gool stuff, 80% disapointment
fallendrom30 January 2022
Tbh the ending of the game is so bad and exhausting that i truly wanted to rate it 1/10 after beating the story (it is just a constant tiresome streak of bosses one after the other - terrible game design decision, imo. I was like "just end it already, its getting worst and more stupid with every next boss fight in a row").

But with all rage aside it is worth a 5/10, and 4/10 if it would be a fresh new title, not world famous game remake with tons of nostalgia involved.

Plot - it is ok while it sticks to the original, but all this new whispers nonsence is total garbage and shouldnt exist

Combat - it feels incomplete. It is better than in ff15, but still needs improvement. Sometimes camera doing stupid things, mobile enemies are pain cause AI is bad when it comes to measuring distance to land a hit with skills, so u can often miss unless you manually get to right distance.

Overall teammates AI is very poor, they are way too passive and u cant really change it unless you controll them manually. And u cant do this with 3 units at the same time when the combat is real time. So your main unit always gets his action gauge filled 3-4 times faster than 2 other units and it is annoying. Sometimes AI controlled teammates just stand and block or standing afk instead of doing something and it is strange that i could't find any settings to change their behavior. FF12 used to have 10 or 12 setting for each character (for example, use offensive magic if u face flying enemy for the characters with melee weapon, use healing item of magic if ally health drop below 40% etc). And in FF7 remake sometimes allies feels more like a burden than like useful help (example, boss use aoe attack and all your charactes got heavy damage, but only main character have enough action gauge to use heal cause other 2 are too passive, so you waste your turns to heal the other two and not doing damage while they are slowly accumutating their gauge). And the action gauge system itself have 1 problem - spamming enemies, like one guy at the end of the game that constatly throws powerfull attacks at you and you cant accumulate enough gauge to keep the pace.

But still the combat system have improved much since ff15 with no chance to abuse items finally (which is major problem to a most modern rpg's) and i hope square will polish it for FF16.

Graphics - main characters looking really good, Clouds greatsword on his back with materia is looking great, but overall indoors and outdoors are pretty mediocre, and i'm playing PS5 version.

Game design - game is just a gut and absolutelly linear, it has next to none exploration and many "you cant go there right now cause Hey cloud, my home is this way" moments are annoying and feels like just poor game design

Main problem is lenght. They literally stretched a good fast paced opening to a big adventure from original (it took about 7 hours to get through) to a boring and awfully slow 30 hours of cuscenes, filler content + commonplace sidequests and very slow mediocre gameplay. Everything in this game except for combat is painfully slow.

If this "game" would be twice shorter it would be only for the best. Same plot with more details and depth for 15 hours and it wouldn't fail the pace so much (but then it would be harder to sell it for AAA price ofc).

P. S. Funny to see all those 10/10 guys that obviously dont spend even 3 hours playing before making a reviev)

23 years in waiting and by god have they delivered.. i was obsessed with the original. My all time favourite game so naturally i was sceptical and worried they were tampering with such a classic. I am absolutely delighted with it.. really felt like you were in the world of final fantasy 7. The characters, story, graphics and of course the battle syetem were absolutely on point. Not 1 complaint..groundbreaking game and i hope the next parts to the game continue to impress.

Worth the Wait
falcondj15 April 2020
Fans of the original along with newcomers will be blown away by the story, scenery, music, and game play. There are things like some background rendering that can be touched up a little bit, but that's not enough for me to dock any points from a perfect scoring game. The only thing I would say is if you're a newcomer or not an avid FFVII fan like myself, then you can save $20-$30 and get the standard edition, and that is more than enough content to please anybody.

Fantastic. But I sense it would've meant more if I had played the original.
Matrix_Gaming8 April 2021
My first ever Final Fantasy game.

Story was crazy, unpredictable and truly awesome. Characters were unique, each one had something interesting about them that kept me invested throughout the game. The game does a great job of making you genuinely care for them. However, I always got the feeling that if I had played the original, these feelings would've been heightened and the story would've meant a whole lot more.

I was sceptical of the battle system at first but, as I played and got used to it, it became the best part of the game. Especially when you have 3 in a party. The stop start nature is perfect for scoping out each fight and getting the best tactical advantage.

My one gripe would be that the majority of the side quests felt a little stale and had no other purpose but to lengthen the game.

Overall its a must play. Even for people who have never played a Final Fantasy game, as I hadn't.

Way To Be Bold, Square Enix
JayDeeezy11 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This review contains major spoilers. Please skip if you have not finished the game.

Fans have been waiting for this game for a long time. People wanted a straight recreation of what was originally presented in 1997 but with new graphics. What we got was a tongue-in-cheek remake/sequel hybrid and I love it.

The game itself is incredibly fun. The combat system is smooth and enjoyable yet complex. It incorporates the old materia system into something fresh and I'd argue it's the best combat system we have ever seen in a Final Fantasy game. The characters are brought to life with stunning visuals and good voice acting that can be a little cheesy at times but very much in line with an anime-like style. I agree that there are parts of the game that drag on a bit too long but at the same time, people waited for this for years and what they got was tons of content. As such, the story doesn't play out in an ideally efficient and smooth manner, but the original was the same way!

Now to the story: I just love that Square Enix took it in this direction. They obviously wanted to expand on the universe and create a surprise that would be both nostalgic but also breathe new life into the franchise. The idea of alternate timelines are floating around a lot lately in movie narratives but it's still an interesting idea. I'll admit, it was a bit hard to follow just what the heck was going on during the ending at first playthrough, but I ultimately don't mind the Kingdom Heartsy tone.

My hat is off to Square Enix for not just succumbing to the fanboys/girls's demands. It's quite a bold move to forge an unexpected path for one of the most popular games of all time. All the more reason why I love the title: Remake - they're redoing this story, and I can't wait to see what comes next.

Great except some bad camera and little story
EasternZZ19 April 2020
THIS GAME IS GREAT, but it is not perfect.

This is not really an RPG in the sense you don't really get much opportunity to level up since it follows a fairly traditional action game (stage 1, stage 2, etc...). In the places that you are given a choice to "grind," it is not worth it since the enemies give so little experience points and you have to leave areas and return for the enemies to revive.

There is still some customization involve but it mostly deals with material as opposed to stats, since stats are generally gain to a certain extend. I wish you had more opportunities to explore the city but you don't really get that. ONCE YOU LEAVE AN AREA, THAT IS USUALLY IT. You don't get a chance to go to that area anytime you want.

The camera is ok for the most parts but some battles can get really clunky, especially if the enemies are in a small area or if they are flying. The camera will just go all over the place.

The biggest issue is that the story really doesn't go anywhere, it is just a setup. The Midgar section in the original FF7 was around 3 - 4 hours long only, there is not much story there, just a set up. Square Enix took that and turned it into a fun 30+ hour game. It is not a spoiler but it literally ends when you leave Midgar so yup.

PC VERSION - Almost Great, but ...
Sandre-Monroe29 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I will talk about the PC version.

I got 650 hours on ff7 Ps1 so i can compare, and 40 years playing video games. I am not just a ff7 original addict far from it. I play many more games, and am one of the best tank of Division 2 worldwide for example.

This way, you know what is talking.

The combat system and materia system are very good.

The graphics, musics and the design are astonishing.

But, for the game it self :

way too much boring story about XYZ way too much movies, cut scene, walk there ... 95% filler.

It is a corridor game with too many limitations.

You can't go there, you can't have more than 1 materia on this style, you can't properly farm, you can't duplicate materia ... ... ...

The summon system is awful, you can't control them, they are just here, can't die, can't be attacked almost, and you do not feel them at all. They are just here to be here and hit. This is very lame and put them at the lowest position into the game. And honestly they are almost all the time useless. You can't summon them when you want. You can't upgrade them.

FF7 was for me a game who open the players to freedom and farming was easy, cool and simple. On this one you simply can't farm. The essence of the game was to : go wherever you want, run in circle and kill random zone enemies to upgrade stuff and learn new stuff, steal new stuff and so on,

here NOTHING! You go there, kill the bad guys, and that's all. When dead, it is almost impossible to get more. What is absolutely boring and a poor choice of game design.

In PS1 you get 600h of pure gameplay to upgrade everything and you can get more than 150 combinations to do whatever you want with your stuff

Into the remake you got 45h of 3D MOVIES !

And less than 9h of gameplay.

The story is good, but we do not want to watch a movie we want to play.

Sorry, but any good mmo gives you 90% of gameplay and 10% of movies into ff7r you get 95% of movies and corridors.

When you finish the game, you unlock hard mode, and this mode is the most stupidest mode i ever played this last 40 years. You can't use ITEMS anymore. What a good idea, into any mmo's and particularly ff mmo's all players will COLLECT stuff any stuff, and now you have the hard mode on and you can't use them, what put the MONEY , the ITEMS and everything useful you have found this last 20 hours into a big trashcan.

And now we need to redo the game a second time to unlock stuff in hard mode ??? Sorry but no thank you. Game design is very bad on this point, because there is no point to do it.

The story will stay the same! There is no DER RICHTER like ff10, there is no real purpose to do it except 1 summon -_- and when you got it ?

That's all. There is the simulator, there is the arena ok ok but they are limited spaces with exactly the same enemies at the same moments at the same places what ti is extremely boring.

So to be simple, hard mode is : upgrade your stuff more for almost no purpose. And mash the skip button because 45h of cut scenes are coming AGAIN! Well ...

i am disappointed.

After 22 years waiting for that, it is a correct game but a bad rpg.

Without freedom, without customization, without a real purpose ...

i really hope : when all the opuses will be released, the game will be complete and we will have "at last" something extraordinary.

But for now it is a blablabla rpg with way too many limitations and i am not motivated to redo it just for scraps.

Ok, but didn't meet my expectations.
loganren5 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to get into this one after everything I heard about how it was "the best story in gaming" but I just couldn't get into it. I beat it so I can say that it only got good near the end, the gameplay was not very forgiving to my play style, the game weirdly has no balls even though it killed off Jesse thanks to not killing Barrett and Biggs even though they should've been dead. The arsenal is a massive pain in the ass, the camera was hiding the debris leading me to get owned by the death beam multiple times. I'm sorry but I couldn't get into this game like everyone else, I can only give it a 7/10. Edit: 5/10 because the sequel demo looks like the exact same game.

Nostalgia with love and respect
arnoud-bekker6 January 2021
I have fond memories of this game, i simply adored the original when i was a teenager.

I was obviously afraid to even try the remake. Would they destroy it like disney destroyed star wars? Another cash grab, for al the fans who would try anything to get this nostalgic sense of wonder and adventure they once experienced?

But i did try and square redeemed themselves in an epic fashion. This game is loyal to the fans and the original game. They didn't try to force it on a new generation with the gameplay they expect. Instead, they lovingly took what made the original so memorable. Tried to expand on what worked and what could be improved. At the same time reworking the story, to fit within a modern game and modern storytelling.

They succeeded beyond expectation. Even the music is perfectly improved. I am enjoying everything, experiencing this story i already know and love, in new ways as an adult.

Good job Square! More of this please(ff9)

Fantastic in Almost Every Way

This game is pretty freakin amazing. From the openimg cinematic to the credits roll, I was completely immersed. The voice acting is great. The gameplay is accessible without being too simplistic. The boss fights were phenomenal. It just worked. I absolutely loved this game.

I only played about an hour of the original FF7 before playing this, but from what I saw, this game both faithfully recreates the magic while successfully expanding the story, characters, and overall experience. The side quests can be a bit fluff at times, but I never complained about spending more time in the world this game created. It was beautiful and gritty in a way that seemed to really bring back the feeling of what games were like in the late 90's and early 2000's.

The flaws are few and far between, but if I was picking and choosing I would have removed the majority of the Wall Market chapter. There were a few moments and cutscenes in particular that I would have happily done away with. Other than that, though, no glaring errors come to mind. Without the aforementioned portion of the game, it would be an 11/10. With it, it still gets a 10 from me.

In conclusion, I believe this game to be an immersive and moving experiences for both fans and newbies alike.
