Well written and directed
bosstrangla7 April 2018
Let me start by saying the wrestling and fighting scenes... Horrible. They should've done better at choreographing the scenes but I use to compete so probably over critical about them. Now that that is out the way, this movie really touched me. It wasn't about wrestling or fighting but about life choices. The characters grow on you just like the movie. At first it seemed to be to fast and scattered but finally finds a better rhythm, displaying the girls love for a father who is lost. I definitely recommend watching

Netflix Movies
dogukanaksu1 April 2018
I watched Titan right before this movie. Both starts with rich content and finishes with unreasonable endings. I am sure that we will not see the second part of these movies. Netflix needs to do something on this issue.

Loved this Movie
tamykovision5 July 2018
Great Movie that showed the struggles of a teen trying to be accepted in her environment. I love how this movie not only shows this but also ties it in metaphorically with what she is wrestling with, and shows the battles she has to endure to overcome her biggest challenge. Elvire Emanuelle did an Amazing job Portraying that character. Great Cast and Film!

It really becomes a touching father/daughter love story at the end.

'FIRST MATCH': Four Stars (Out of Five)

The new Netflix drama about a teenage girl from Brooklyn's Brownsville, who's spent years in foster care, that decides that joining the boy's wrestling team is the only way to reconnect with her estranged father. It was written and directed by Olivia Newman, and it stars Elvire Emanuelle, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Colman Domingo, Jharrel Jerome, and Jared Kemp. The film was released by Netflix through it's streaming site, and I found it to be a bit of a tearjerker at times.

Monique (Newman) is a teenage girl from the Brooklyn Brownsville neighborhood, who's spent most of her life growing up in foster homes. She really wants to reconnect with her father, Darrel (Abdul-Mateen II), and she thinks the only way she can do this is by joining the boy's wrestling team. The team even allows her to play, and she's good at it, but of course this isn't enough to win over her hard to pleased dad. So things become more extreme.

The movie is a little slow-paced, and too reminiscent of other similar themed dramas, but I have to admit that (towards the end of the film) the drama really got to me. Especially the climax. The two leads are really good in their roles (especially Emanuelle), and the movie really becomes a touching father/daughter love story at the end. There's even some exciting fight scenes in it as well. I definitely recommend it.

Fighting
kosmasp8 August 2018
Life is a ... fight? I guess so, better than the other "b-word" comparison maybe. In this case it really captures what this is about. A girl that has father issues and also anger issues. Why not combine both and "fight" them? So that is what is happening here and it really hits home with the drama and the acting is really good too (fighting also).

This may offend some people, especially if you don't feel the relationship between her and her father. But it is painted nicely and it doesn't try easy ways out. It's not like you are going to get something you yearned for. Something a let's say more cliche movie might have done. So you may like this approach and ultimately (re)solution this aims for, or you may hate it for not being the way you would like it to be ... hopefully you'll enjoy it for what it is! And take the message to heart! Fight for what you believe in

Great Story, Excellent Cinematography

A little gem in Netlix's huge library.

Great story, great acting all around. Definitely worth the watch. I appreciate how the director and screen writers kept in clean for viewers in comparison to what is being pushed out into the market in this day and age. No sex or nudity, just great story telling.

The lighting, the handheld looking shots, the overall cinematography was absolutely on point for the style.

Great

I loved that it was very authentic and the acting was great. Sad to see how some parents ruin their kids' lives and have such bad influence. This film is inspiring and shows the true power of will and complexities of our society. That poor girl really had it rough. Being a girl in a place where girls are only being sexualised, poor and basically almost homeless, with a beatup dad who only tried to use her, and a few good people on the way.

Strong film that takes radical turn from typical high school coming of age movies.

Would recommend. Worth the two hours. Funny how the main character is a black woman named Mo (short for Monique).

Went in with low expectations, came out a huge fan. Newman tells a story that should resonate with anyone who sees it, and I've been recommending First Match to everyone I know.

This is her fight
gewaltgenuss26 August 2020
Really enjoyed this film. It was incredibly interesting and touching to observe the transformation of the main character, her attempts to get close to her father, doing the same sport. Despite all the difficulties she doesn't give up to prove to her father that she is strong.

Really touching and realistic
catalinapopa-688258 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I loved it. I cried in the end, it's really touching.

The story is about a gril who tries to be the best version of herself for her father. She makes a lot of trouble for all the foster families. It seems intentional because she doesn't want a new family, she wants her father approval and love. She exceeds her limits for her father's attention.

Even it doesn't look like that, I think the end is happy because sometimes you just have to realize when someone is toxic for you.

The end is somehow open, a lot of things that are not shown to you, it doesn't need a second part because you find out the most important one. The one that gives you the belief and the hope that things you'll be alright for that girl.

I'm not native in english so I hope my mistakes won't be judged to harsh 🙈.

Watch the movie. It is worth it.
