Discovering more of China
GANdeK15 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
These cities in China are amazing and it's great that Grand Tour went to Chongqing. The cars and challenge were great except the flamethrower drones which were useless - its scenes like that that Grand Tour definitely needs to chill on I prefer old school simple challenges versus high tech drones.

Mostly enjoyable silliness in China
Tweekums15 February 2019
This instalment sees the boys heading to Chongqing; a Chinese megacity. Here there set about trying to show that Chinese drivers could save a lot of money by heading to Europe, buying second hand luxury cars then shipping them to China. To this end Clarkson turns up in an old BMW 750iL, May drives a Mercedes S600, with broken air-con, and Hammond turns up in a twenty year old Cadillac STS. After driving around town and giving us information about the rapid development of the city we get the usual trials and 'improvements'. The trials include driving round a course while being attacked by flamethrower equipped drones and racing up a very windy road. Back in the UK we have a 'Conversation Street' discussion about Chinese cars and a test drive of Chinese electric supercar, the NIO EP9.

Overall I rather enjoyed this episode although a couple of times the silliness went a bit too far. Starting with the good stuff; I really enjoyed the general driving around Chongqing and the interesting facts about China's rapid development. This includes lots of great shots of new roads passing through stunning scenery. The 'Conversation Street' section was interesting and the NIO test was impressive. While silly I did enjoy the flamethrower drones. On the down side the 'car improvement' section went on a bit long and was pure silliness that told us nothing about cars or the country they were in. The final hill climb section was fun until the obviously staged crash involving a three-wheeler one of the trio were driving after their car broke down. Overall a solid episodes that was informative and amusing with only a few weak points; I suspect fans will enjoy it.

Wish there were better car challenges
vineetsaharan16 February 2019
Where are those challenges with old cars like drag race or show how fast it can go from 0-60. Creativeness with old car test challenges is greatly missing imo.

Hmm i think I didn't miss anything 😅 any episode starting from TG until now and this is the first time. You guys need to make another episode on Chinese build cars only.

Liked it, nice look at a part of China
polsixe16 March 2019
Fairly good travelogue film, enjoyed seeing the part of China selected and the new modern roadways. Some of the gags were a little mouldy but all in all pretty good. The EP9 test was interesting as was Hammond's good natured take on his previous crashes.

Felt a bit off

Warning: Spoilers
It's still good don't get me wrong but compared to the others this felt a bit off to me

Especially it seemed like they didn't like it there, at all.

Enjoyed conversation street and the bit on the EP9 which seems to be a brilliant car but the parts filmed in China weren't amazing

So far the 'least good' episode in the series in my opinion, still enjoyed three quarters of it then I lost interest a bit and I'm not the only one i suppose.

Ruined at the last minute (again!)
nigelfour6 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A perfectly good episode, ruined by the completely predictable "crash" at the end. Why do they bother with stunts like that? It stopped being funny 15 years ago.

2 week old takeaway for thought.

Warning: Spoilers
A few years ago on Top Gear James and Jeremy went to China to laugh at knock-off copies of European cars. There was another old episode where James kitted out an old S-Class interior with wood, one where Jeremy put a bed in an old BMW and I'm sure Richard tried cooking in the back of some old banger once before. Fast forward to 2019 and we have all those old ideas rolled into one under the premise that the Chinese should buy 20 year old western luxury cars and save themselves some cash. In past adventures the cast gave the viewer at least the impression that they were genuinely proud of their old cars and would defend them to the last and do anything to keep them going, not anymore alas. This time it felt like they couldn't care less if their cars made it through the episode. And that is my issue with this series so far and this episode in particular, no one seems to care anymore. Sure, the cinematography is as good as ever but the joy has gone.

We're out of ideas but paid a boatload
damon_jacobs4 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So this episode exists on the flimsiest excuse ever, that the Chinese should import European luxury cars instead of buying the local cars on offer. Plausible: yes. Execution: pathetic. Ignoring all of the laws regarding the importation of cars into China it just devolves into a pointless joke where each presenter tries to do something stupider and completely unrealistic than the others. It's Celebratly Big Brother with wheels without the sex appeal.

Pointless and dull
mr-vertigo-562-7701522 February 2019
So bad I stopped watching after the EP9 item. Awful drivel but in China. Conversation street is a yawn fest. The whole episode was so familiar it could have been a rerun of an old Top Gear. Chucking money at a tired format doesn't make it better, it just wastes the money.

A filler episode ?
classact682 March 2019
The first season was good, second season was ok, now this third season is boring. This episode was the worst i have seen so far, Clackson said it best at the end of it, a hour we will never get back. I think he even knew it sucked, I really hope it picks up, or there will be no 4th season for me.
