A short review of Season 4 of "The Strain"
ericrnolan19 September 2017
The fourth and final season of "The Strain" was easily its weakest, but was still fun enough to merit an 8 out of 10.

Season 1 was a unique, detailed, methodically assembled techno- thriller crossbred with vampire mythology — you could tell that it was adapted from a pretty decent book series by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. The show's subsequent seasons progressively meandered farther and farther into comic book territory … the fourth felt loosely and hastily plotted, with spotty and confusing exposition. (I was considerably confused until late in the game about who deployed nuclear weapons in the war between vampires and humans, when they did so, and what their strategy was.)

But what the hell. I still enjoyed this. The writers here still know where their bread is buttered, and gave survival-horror fans more of the screwball guilty pleasures they were tuning in for. There was plenty of blood and gore (even if it's only the white, worm-infested vampire blood that I suspect was easier for the censors to approve). There were more of the show's creepy, cringe- inducing monster effects. And there was plenty of action — right up until a finale that was predictable but cool. (If you've been following the show the way I have, do you not want to see machine guns, explosions, swords and severed vampire heads?)

Richard Sammel consistently outshined everyone in his role as the WWII Nazi turned vampire Himmler. What an extraordinary villain.) It's a further testament to his talent that the man actually appears sublimely good-natured in real life. (He interacts with his fans from time to time on Facebook.)

The show actually surprised me, too, by how attached I got to its characters. It hasn't always been a show that is strong on its characters, but … I'm going to miss them. Vasily Fet (Kevin Durand) and "Dutch" (Ruta Gedmintas) were two in particular that I found myself surprisingly attached to — especially considering that Dutch was a superfluous character that seems to have been added only for sex appeal and romantic tension. I was rooting for both of them.

So I'd still recommend "The Strain," despite Season 4's failings. To quote Jack Nicholson's Joker in 1989's "Batman," "I don't know if it's art, but I like it." (Yes, I do know that Walt Disney said it first. Whatever.)

And... what a disappointment, but actually I liked it... kind of.

Warning: Spoilers
Well, I don't usually make reviews from series (except maybe 2 that deserved my attention).

But, this one completely deserve it in the wrong way.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

I was very disappointed about the end of the series. I was "What the hell? they destroyed the Master with a nuke? AND WHAT WHAT ALL THE FUZZ ABOUT THE LUMEN?

Seriously, for three seasons I wanted to know how they will use "the secret that lies in the Lumen" that was heavily referenced even almost to the end. Specially when Setrakian had mentioned the two snakes.

I was expecting something awesome: and nothing on this matter happened. They just killed the Master with a nuke that wasn't even remote linked to the Lumen.

I was expecting that Zack and Eph would die, but not that "Change of heart" at last minute from the kid, who was the whole two last seasons being really evil and against humanity, that including let a girl being killed and converted. The cause? he liked her and she reject him because she had a boyfriend.

And Dutch was claiming that wanted to be with Fet. She cried for it when was trying to convince him to not sacrifice him self. She achieved, he didn't: she left him? I didn't get that.

I loved Dutch, but in the end she was kind of a jerk with Fet all the way.

END OF SPOILERS.

Despite all of that, was a nice end, giving a great fan-service and a closure with action and good performances.

The Bad: all things that were waited and not defined in the end. The Good: completely wrapped y with a fine end, with no cliffhangers.

7/10

Watch at your own risk, but to make a critic is necessary to watch.

Greetings

Zach´s Redemption
claudio_carvalho31 January 2019
The group is attacked by a horde of vampires and Gus and his team ask to be left behind and the others leave the spot to protect the nuclear warhead. Only Gus and Roman survive and Fet drive to a water tunnel that has been under construction for many years to hide the weapon. Then they plot a mean to bring The Master to the tunnel to destroy him and spare Manhattan and the population. Quinlan and Fet decide that they need to sacrifice their lives to get rid of The Master, since Fet needs to activate the bomb. Soon The Master, Zach and his horde invade the access to the tunnel and Quinlan drags him to the tunnel. Zach also goes to the place with a weapon and Eph uses the elevator and leaves Fet on the surface. Now the final showdown between Quinlan and The Master will begin. What will Eph and Zach do?

"The Last Stand" is a satisfactory conclusion of "the Strain" despite the confused Zach. This character is a complete mess and despite his final sacrifice, it is never clear why he detonated the warhead since he show Eph in the previous scene. Setrakian and Quinlan are nice characters that served to their purpose. Fet, Dutch, Gus, Roman are also OK. My vote is nine.

I will remember this show as one of my favorites

A good story that you can't wait to see next episode till you finish the show. I think The Walking Dead producers should learn when you should finish a show from The Strain because their show is becoming boring more and more. If Walking Dead people made Strain, they would continue making it season by season and all you see was people talking!

A rushed ending
anselmdaniel19 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This review contains spoilers.

The Strain's finale seeks to resolve a lot of plot lines. The heroes have assembled the nuclear bomb and are seeking to eradicate The Master and his vampires once and for all. Eichorst's death has left The master alone with Zach being the only one standing with him. The heroes are dealing with Setrakian's death and the others know they must win or die.

This finale is mostly satisfying. Like the rest of the series, the finale has high production values. The plan to trap The Master is fine and all of the characters belong in the finale. The ending epilogue is satisfying and I am happy the series ended the way it did. I feel the series could not have ended better in its last season due to the somewhat sudden cancellation of the series.

One of the problems with this episode is the ending battle. The characters that are not involved with fighting The Master gun down strigoi like they are scenery. I did not feel tense watching these scenes as the normal strigoi are more like props by this finale episode.

The final battle between Quinlan and The Master is anti-climactic. This is unfortunate as the series had hinted at this fight since Quinlan was first introduced. This should have been an amazing fight but instead it was over after a few minutes. It seemed as if Quinlan should have been able to overcome The Master in Eldritch Palmer's body.

Zach's redemption also seems random and not well developed. Since the end of season two, Zach had been on a downward spiral. He was being groomed to be the next body for The Master, which he seemed fine with. Here in the finale, he somehow reconnects with his humanity and destroys The Master after his dad sacrifices himself. I did not like this switch on Zach's character that seemingly happened for no reason. Even in the earlier episodes of this season. Zach had betrayed his fellow humans and also turned an innocent girl into a vampire. Zach's redemption needed to happen earlier to have any effect.

Overall the series finale is great. Any fan of The Strain should watch this finale.

Grade: B

The Strain Season Four

The below contains spoilers for the fourth season.

The Strain season four takes place months after the end of the third season. The vampires have brought about an apocalypse and vampires can now roam during the day. The nuclear bomb detonated in the end of the third season by Zach is referred to as "Illumination Day". This plunges the world into one that is ruled by The Master and our heroes from the previous seasons are hunted by the vampires. The heroes seek a nuclear weapon to attempt to destroy The Master one last time.

The tone of this season is absolutely the best part of the season. All of the characters know the are nearing the end of humanity if they abide by the world The Master rules. They all resist in different ways and try to reconnect with each other. Eph had become disillusioned with his son's betrayal and now focuses on survival. Dutch is one of Setrakian's closest supporters and she attempts to escape a prison to find Setrakian. Quinlan and Fet attempt to retrieve a nuclear bomb in order to destroy The Master. The last season felt the most focused as there is little filler. This is a great benefit as all of the character arcs are resolved. Eph comes to terms with his son. Dutch and Setrakian make amends for the mistakes they made in the past. Quinlan and Fet must deal with aggressive humans that have surrendered to the new order.

The weakness of this season is still the rushed writing. Zach is not a likable character and the ending with his reconciliation with Eph felt mis-written. I did not buy the shift in his character at all.

The Strain season 4 is recommended. Across the entire series, the episodes provide high quality entertainment in a unique setting with vampires. I would recommend the series as a while.

The entire series as a whole is recommended. The best seasons of the series are the first and fourth seasons. The second season is the weakest with the third season simply a build up to the fourth season. The first season is good because it started out well. The fourth season was able to tie every arc back together in a mostly satisfying way. The main problem with the second and third season is the slow pacing. Nothing about the pacing can be considered good unless the audiences likes the universe of The Strain.

A Decent Way to End the Show [8/10]
panagiotis19931 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Reaction / Review for The Strain Season 4 Episode 10 ''The Last Stand'' (S4. E10) (Finale): Episode 9 was good and I gave it a rating 8/10. So they got the bomb but are they going to use it? They don't even know where the Master is. Wow Fet is willing to die by detonating the bomb? That's brutal but it sounds like a very good plan to destroy the Master. Nice to see Setrakian even if it is a flashback. Some cool action scenes. Wait what happened? Is Eph about to sacrifice himself to beat the Master? The Master just killed Quinlan, that sucks! Wow Eph just became the new host/master? And... we have Zach now being a good boy? I wont forget all the wrong things he has done. A spoiled evil selfish boy. Overall a good episode to end the show. My rating is 8/10.

Something to keep your taste bud going!
joereid8619 September 2017
Overall having followed the whole series I felt this one was the most rushed. some of the characters we met were just thrown in their for the mix. But it was a great finale with a few surprises thrown in for some blood thirsty drama. I will miss the on screen presence of David Bradley (Abraham Setrakian) & Richard Sammel (Thomas Eichorst)

Overall a good episode despite some weakness from some characters/actors (cough Zach Goodweather) the lead actors keep the show going. 7/10 for this episode. Now just give me The Walking dead!

Quick Ending to a Long Series
storm_cloud-5563917 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The Strain ended with a quick, fan-pleasing conclusion tonight but let's go back to the last episode of last season. Just when our heroes were about to defeat the Master, Zach detonated a nuclear device, destroying Liberty Island, the Statue of Liberty and coating NYC with radiation. On watching the first episode of the this season, I thought I had missed a few episodes. The team had split up and was dispersed around the country. Suddenly the Master had complete control of the world. Little by little we learn there had been a worldwide nuclear war with major cities destroyed. The writers weren't very forthcoming with this information.

The Great Ending owes quite a lot to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. The Master (Emperor) says, "Zach (Luke), kill your father and take your place by my side. Together we will run the world (universe)." Zach, who has been a traitorous little snot the entire series, refused to kill Eph and shoots the Master instead. Then he detonates a second bomb, killing himself, the Master, his dad and saving NYC. Why the sudden change?

Just think, if they had lured the Master into a trap sooner and killed him with just three people, the series would have lasted maybe only two seasons.
