Storyline

THE UNTOLD TALES OF ARMISTEAD MAUPIN examines the life and work of one of the world's most beloved storytellers, following his evolution from a conservative son of the Old South into a gay rights pioneer whose novels have inspired millions to claim their own truth. Jennifer Kroot's documentary about the creator of TALES OF THE CITY moves nimbly between playful and poignant and laugh-out-loud funny. With help from his friends (including Neil Gaiman, Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, Sir Ian McKellen and Amy Tan) Maupin offers a disarmingly frank look at the journey that took him from the jungles of Vietnam to the bathhouses of 70's San Francisco to the front line of the American culture war. This documentary about author Armistead Maupin's fascinating life and career is an informative, charming and moving peak into a uniquely talented public figure. Within the LGBT world, Maupin is a downright rock star thanks to his longtime public advocating for equal rights and representation, not to mention his immortal series "Tales of the City," which originated in the San Francisco Chronicle in the mid-1970s. Director Jennifer M. Kroot has a knack for extracting powerful, insightful interviews with a variety of public figures and Maupin's logical family (including Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis) but the real star of the show is Maupin himself, whose interviews are insightful and charming. The audience is treated to a candid peak inside his personal life, and with the help of husband Christopher Turner, the portrait that's painted is one of sincerity, love and gratitude and it's hard not to walk away from the movie feeling touched and inspired.
