I never heard of Todrick Hall until a recent episode of Queer Eye's target mentioned he was his inspiration. Watching this doc, I can see the fascination. By sheer will power, Todrick puts on a show based in part on The Wizard of Oz & his own life, w/the barest of materials & the largest of gumption to get his music & message across. If only someone could bottle up his nerve & 'tude, I think we'd have another source of energy.

This documentary is going off madly in all directions at once. TH checks each and every politically correct box during the documentary with motherhood and Christianity thrown in for good measure. His current boyfriend is featured but we are left with no sense of their relationship. We do learn a lot more about his first love which I found disrespectful of the bf.
More importantly, I left without understanding his creative process or why he took to the road with his first draft of a musical. More disturbing was his lack of financial backing, the risks that he took with such a punishing schedule, and no apparent understanding of how to turn a solid profit on tour. Music is a business, but nowhere was that apparent.
Bright stars flame out so I left the movie house feeling somewhat sorry for the guy.

Such an ambitious project Todrick embarked on. It all looked so chaotic and I would definitely stay out of his way, kinda like the path of a tornado. But when it's Showtime and the red curtains fall, the show glittered brighter than those ruby slippers.

Behind the Curtain is most amazing documentary that I have seen. First of all, I watched it with the most lit people you could ever meet and that made it even more enjoyable.
As for the actual documentary content, it was so emotional and inspiring to learn so much about a man, album, and stage show that I have grown to love over the years. It will make you cry, laugh, sing, and dance.
The process of putting writing an album, producing it, and directing the music videos and stage show for it simultaneously all while starring in every video is a feat that I don't even think the most accomplished artist can do and Todrick Hall did it in such a small amount of time.
If you already know of Todrick Hall and all he has done, watching this documentary will make you love him even more!
Do yourself a favor and watch this piece of art. You will not regret it!

As long time fans of Todrick Hall, on Mother's Day 2017, my daughter and I went to Boise, ID to see the show Straight Outta Oz live. It was the most fun we have ever had. A few months later this documentary was being shown at a film festival in SLC, UT of course we had to see it! It was wonderful to see all the hard work & dedication that was put into this production along with the love & compassion all the Team had to make the show a reality. You will laugh, cry & ponder your own dreams watching this 🎥. It was so much fun to see it after we saw the show, it brought the great memories of the talent, dancing, music & fun! A must see!!
10/10 - One of the best documentaries i've ever seen!

Todrick truly gives his fans, which are known as Toddlerz, an inside look into his creative process and how he brings his ideas to life. You see happy moments, stressful moments, and some crisis moments. It's amazing to see how Todrick can pull an album and a tour together so fast, it's just incredible. He directed, starred in, danced in and sang in every song and video. If you want to know what talent truly is, watch this documentary and see how talented Todrick is! I went to North Carolina, from Philadelphia PA to see it with some of my best friends, that I've met because of Todrick, and we laughed, cried, and sang along the whole way through!

I saw this at a film festival, mostly as a filler between screenings of things I wanted to see. But, since I knew of Todrick via Drag Race, I thought I'd at least get some more background on the guy, which I did. However, what was a big turn off was at the end discovering that the producer of this documentary was none other than Todrick Hall himself. That, more than anything made me lose a chunk of respect for this talented performer. What would drive a person to be so very narcissistic to think that producing a documentary about himself would be a good thing? Someone please send this dude a healthy dose of humility.

I saw Behind the Curtain at a film festival in North Carolina and I have never been more moved by a film in my entire life. Todrick is known for being very honest and open with his fans and this film took it one step further by allowing us to see his day to day. As fans all we want to do is support him and when he goes on tour or write an album all we have to do is buy it but we never actually get to see the work that goes into it. Todrick cares so much about the content that he puts out and works so hard to protect his brand so to be a fan and to watch this film was a dream come true. This man from a small town in Texas creates a world where those who may feel left out or who are struggling with who they are can come and be themselves. Todrick never ceases to amaze me and I am proud to be a TODDLER and I am so thankful that I got the opportunity of a life time to watch this amazing piece of art. I was able to watch my idol do what he does best and that is to use the talents that God has given him to create things the world has never seen before. If you haven't seen the film I Highly suggest you put it at the top of your bucket list because you won't regret watching Todrick create magic.

I'm always left in complete awe of Todrick and his immense talents when I watch his videos online, see him perform on stage, and I can say the same for this documentary. I'm in AWE! Getting the opportunity to see how much work he put into the music, visual album, and stage production from start to finish was beyond inspiring. Todrick is a force to be reckoned with! It's completely evident he put his entire heart and soul into this project. Katherine Fairfax Wright did an absolutely incredible job documenting every moment with Todrick and his team. I really feel like I got a true sense of life "Behind the Curtain". I highly recommend you check out this film, as well as all of Todrick's content on YouTube!

I love this documentary so much! It really takes a raw and real look at what goes on "Behind The Curtain" in the life of Todrick! Its a very interesting film to watch and you really get to know more about the performer rather than seeing him from the outside. Would give it 20 stars if I was allowed to.

I absolutely love this documentary it is amazing you really get a chance to learn more about todricks life and the lives of the other performers and how much hard work and dedication they put in to making sure the show is absolutely amazing it's so much fun to watch the cast and crew work together like one big family to make one wonderful masterpiece the documentary is just filled with so much love and joy and is just absolutely outstanding if you haven't seen it already you defiantly should.

Respect and love, that is what I felt watching this documentary.
No matter what color or gender, you just 'have to' love him.
I only watched it because it was the last day it was on Netflix but it spinnen my head.
He has way to much energy and ideas to just play a role on Broadway. He should be directing it.
Even if it will never thinkable to physically love him, the world and for sure the USA would be a lot more livable.

One of the reviewers here indicated that Todrick is egotistical and narcissistic for producing his documentary 'Behind the Curtain'. The very thing he sees as a fault is why I admire him. I ran across his 'Greatest Showman' video after watching the movie. I was VERY impressed and felt it portrayed the spirit and passion of the songs superbly. It took me several weeks more to look up this artist. He had just released 'Forbidden' and I fell in love with him as a performer.
Why had I not heard of him before? I know more than I want to know about Cardi B and I've yet to see a full length video of hers. What I do know is that she is making some serious change on what I think is subpar talent (my own opinion). While Todrick is struggling to write and produce his visual album as well as put on a tour on what appears to be mostly on his own dime.
He is wildly talented, and a self-made success of mostly his own means. It sounds like he self-publishes his own content and doesn't have a record company to back him. Why? Why would a obviously talent like Todrick have to do everything himself? Because he is deemed unmarketable by corporate record companies. If they can't put him in certain profitable niches, then they want no parts of him. Other than mostly Broadway interviewers, I have not found any music related publications doing reviews of his music.
He is invisible to a certain degree. He said this over and over again and even wrote about it in 'Dumb'. He's created all of his own content thus far, so why wouldn't he advocate for his own projects? Why wouldn't he want people to know more about him and what he believes in and want to be a part of his music? It's a no brainier. If you can't advocate for yourself nobody will.

I Really Enjoyed this filmed. It will inspire you to never give up on your dreams and to keep pushing towards your goals. He went from American Idol to Broadway! I love how it takes u behind the scenes of his life and the back story of who is is today. And what got him to the amazing person that we fell in love with. I really loved seeing Todrick on American idol and then i fell in love with his youtube videos and his film Straight outta Oz. So when i watched this i was just amazed how hard working he is. he is truly a inspiration. The film will make you cry and laugh.he is really So Amazingly talented i will forever be a fan. Amazing movie! Amazing Cast. Defiantly a must see.

I saw this documentary at a LGBT+ film festival and my oh my So many tears were shed during this documentary! This documentary really showed the true side of Todrick Hall. This documentary showed just how hard and long Todrick works as well as Team Toddy. Having been a toddler (Todrick fan) for almost 3 years, I've never seen such an authentic side of Todrick portrayed as this documentary did. Katherine did an amazing job documenting the Straight Outta Oz tour and production and the cast members (whom one I'm very close to). I would rate it more than 10/10 because this documentary definitely exceeded my expectations!

Why had I never heard of this man before? One reviewer said it was narcissistic of him to produce his own doc (check most stars and if they weren't credited, you can bet they were producing behind the scenes). So I haven't heard of him because the music biz can't pigeonhole or control him, nor can Hollywood. How dare someone control their own art! There is nothing bad you can say about this film, and I don't usually give even films I love a 10. He is entertaining off-stage as well as on. He puts his money where his mouth is, and you can't fault that. I am glad to see that Straight Outta Compton has been released on film, but sad to see that it hasn't been picked up by any Broadway producers yet. Guess they can't walk the talk. Big surprise. So many no talents are gumming up the 'waves now, so I just don't pay much attention to new music at this point. As if he would be included, anyway. Well, I am a fan now, and hope to follow him to a very bright future indeed. Glad I caught this on NF and cheers to them for picking it up. Wish they had this musical, too.

Whether or not you've ever heard of the name "Todrick Hall", you will enjoy this documentary! I was already a huge fan or Todrick before watching this film and it only confirmed the many reasons as to why I adore this man as an artist. Although the film focuses mainly on the production of his visual album, "Straight Outta Oz" and his journey on tour, it goes beyond the surface level aspects of fame and will give you great insight into his personal life and the motivations behind his work. There are funny moments, sad moments, inspirational moments and so much more. I promise you will walk away from this film being inspired by his story with a new appreciation for such a true talent!

Todrick Hall is one of my favorite YouTubers so I had to see his documentary. It was so entertaining and fun and it showed all the challenge and struggles he faced trying to make his album and when he went on tour. He is such a hard worker and you see that in this documentary. He is so inspiring and he encourages so many people to be themselves and to never let bully's take you down. I love his Straight Outta Oz album and the video he made for it on YouTube. It's so creative and inspiring. I would definitely recommend watching this documentary if you're a fan of his.

I have looked up to Todrick Hall for many years after seeing him on American Idol, binge watching his YouTube video's, going to multiple concerts and traveling to see him in NYC as he starred as "Lola" in Kinky Boots. This Documentary is fantastic. I love watching the creativity Todrick Hall puts into his work. Without giving away spoilers, this documentary will take you behind the scenes of the Amazing Todrick Hall, and him pouring his entire heart into his creations. He is Brilliant. If you enjoy talented, kind, hard working individuals, I 10/10 recommend you watch this documentary.
