The time machine lands at sea, the trio beaches up separately on two sides of an island. Alone, H.G. finds it's run as an out of control top-secret military experiment by Dr. Monroe, desperate to hunt down his subjects turned monsters before the Army comes inspect him. That requires a radar which broke down, so Wells, whom Monroe admires as author, volunteers to repair it, but pretends he can't when warned by sane escapee Hudson of the evil nature of the experiments. John would do fine if he didn't get captured looking after clumsy Virginia, who does a poor job rescuing him. Monroe injects John as next subject, elated to find him immune to the serum that wrecked the others, risking a more potent formula. Wells has to watch, having been caught as saboteur, and gets the first injection with a new formula mixed with Ripper DNA. Monroes's scientific assistant wants to escape to rejoin his kid, but his wife is devoted to Monroe's genetic ambitions.
