Plot
Dinah Shore/Charles Nelson Reilly/Teri Garr/Thalassa Cruso
The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson
- Johnny looks at terrible song titles. Dinah Shore (Dinah! (1974)); Charles Nelson Reilly complains about the amenities for the show's guests; Teri Garr (Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)); gardening expert Thalassa Cruso discusses house plants.
- Dinah Shore talks about her current show and her interview of Governor Jerry Brown, but then has to leave to catch a plane. When Charles Nelson Reilly comes on, he pretends to be outraged that guests run off without finishing the show. Shore returns and presents him with a bouquet. Reilly then complains that he has never gotten the perks that out-of-town guests receive. When Teri Garr shows up, she's shy and nervous, more so when the lights behind Johnny showing the lake scene burn out, leaving a strange inky blackness. Thalassa Cruso, the prickly plant expert, makes her fourth appearance on the show.—WesternOne
- Ed and Johnny first discuss it being the birthday of the US Marine Corps, in which Ed was a reserve officer. The comedy segment is Worst Song Titles, based on a list by Dr. Demento. Dinah Shore talks about her experiences interviewing guests, and says that it is easier to be the interviewer. Charles Nelson Reilly tells some stories from his career. Teri Garr, clearly nervous about being on the show with Johnny (her only previous appearance was with guest host John Denver), talks about being a ballet dancer when she was younger. She also discusses the film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and UFOs. Thalassa Cruso is a botanical expert and talks about growing plants. She and Johnny then do a demonstration of dividing a fern into multiple pots.—lenab9011
