On 24 May 2019, in the middle of the broadcast of the fourth season, host Tom Gleeson announced via a media release that he was stepping down as the show's host. Two days later, he was nominated for the Gold Logie, the award given to the Most Popular Personality on Australian Television. Later, Gleeson tweeted that if he won, he would "un-axe" the show and return as its host. On 30 June 2019, Gleeson was announced as the winner of the Gold Logie, and in an interview with Australian radio network Triple M on 31 July 2019, he not only announced that the show would return in 2020, but also said that the fifth season would be expanded to 40 new episodes.
The host, comedian Tom Gleeson, has claimed he was surprised by the success of the program, saying he had given up hope of being a star.
The quiz is inspired by Tom Gleeson's "Hard Chat" segment on the satirical television news program The Weekly with Charlie Pickering (2015).
