The Penitent Man
Prismark1020 January 2017
The end of season finale usually features Flambeau and they tend to be one of the best episodes, although, last season's Flambeau episode was marred with some dodgy green screen work.

Flambeau has been charged with murder and has requested Father Brown as his spiritual adviser. The victim is a business associate of Flambeau, Flynn Hardwick despite protesting his innocence, he pleads guilty to his murder and is sentenced to hang.

Bunty and Mrs McCarthy are not convinced of the behaviour of Hardwick's widow and both believe that he is still alive. Father Brown is convinced that all this is an elaborate plan by Flambeau. There is something in the prison he wants, something valuable.

As always Flambeau the master criminal is always one step ahead and Father Brown is not far behind always hoping that Flambeau will one day redeem himself. However Flambeau might have really landed himself in it this time with his complex schemes as his execution is brought forward.

Flambeau and Father Brown again make a great team and it is a nice way to wrap up the fifth series which has gone well despite the cast changes.

That's how to end a series.

Series five has been very good overall, I've noticed a slightly more serious, grown up approach to many episodes, and the show has been all the better for it.

There seems to be a definite pattern with the series finale, John Light is brought back as Hercule Flambeau, and the dynamic between him and Father Brown has become more complex, with a blur between friend and foe. The previous series finale was disappointing in some ways, but this one was excellent.

A wonderfully intelligent story, very unique and cleverly devised, it really had you guessing through til the end, plenty of twists and turns.

Great way to round of series five.

Flambeau's last stand?

Warning: Spoilers
I first saw John Light in the TV series Mars, and also he pops up in at least one episode per season of Father Brown, and his character Flambeau always brings a touch of tension to Father Brown. Anyway, here it appears Flambeau has his last stand as he faces the gallows for a murder he didn't commit.

Anyway, I'm enjoying watching the early seasons of Father Brown and it makes wholesome daytime TV. All credit to the writers because season five, of which this episode is the finale, ran 15 episodes, five more than the usual number.

Anyway, it was terrifying seeing Bunty being banged on the head by the murderer at the end.

A brilliant episode. And John LIght is brilliant.

Written by Tahsin Guner, this episode contains everything I could hope for in a Father Brown, or any other mystery, so applause, too, to producers, directors, set decorators... -- John Light's 'Flambeau'? I wish someone would make an all-Flambeau Father Brown set. His acting is superbly nuanced, but - hold on. This is supposed to be a comment about the episode itself...

Ridiculous story

Getting fed up with the poor stories. Would Father Brown really learn about the fraud and allow it to continue? Can the characters continue to behave so stupidly?
