Series 3 is neatly tied up.
Sleepin_Dragon28 May 2017
Series 3 concludes in good style with this offering, which sees Sidney and Geordie look into the disappearance of a schoolboy, from a wealthy but unloving family. Sidney has a painful decision to make, having tendered his resignation the reality of leaving the Church has a big impact on him.

They managed to cram so much into 45 minutes, the disappearance of the young boy, Mrs Maguire's wedding, Sidney's touch decision, Geordie's efforts to reunite with his wife, and Leonard's self realisation about his sexuality.

This could easily have been messy given the amount of content, but they did a fine job, it was emotional without being soppy. I particularly enjoyed the scenes between Sidney and Mrs M, who showed her softer side.

I sincerely hope we get series 4, but this one seemed to tie up all the loose ends. If it does return I think it would be difficult to write Amanda back in, we've had years of her and Sidney toing and froing, I feel like that story is done.

Very good way to end this series 8/10

Is This It?

Good stories. Good characters. Tough issues. In this episode, not everyone got what they wanted, but there was closure. If this series goes into a fourth year, I believe they need to get back to solving cases and have a little less personal drama. All the participants hand to face their various demons in the previous episode, but now the results of their actions. Sidney, in particular, is in the most tenuous situation (not the most dangerous, however). The story involves the disappearance of a schoolboy. Geordie gets the most involved for interesting reasons. There is also a wedding and a few tears at the end.

Thank goodness

Warning: Spoilers
The selfish needy Amanda is finally gone. It seems her yell at the end to Sidney "you're never gonna be there (for Grace, HER daughter)" sums up the fact that she didn't really love Sidney because love as a verb means To Sacrifice. And in that line, it is clear she is all about her and what she wants and needs (and her daughter), and not about Sidney's pain and suffering, his wants and needs as a person.

This is not a series to watch on binge (like I have been). There are good parts though and leads, Robson & James and Al and Tessa -- all good actors and worthy of a viewing whatever story they are telling.

One Vast Disappointment

Warning: Spoilers
Unquestionably the worst of all episodes in the series--at least at this writing. The kidnapped lad is himself less than likable, Geordie brutally beats up a suspect, and the parties guilty of moral and legal crimes seem to escape without punishment. On top of that, the absurd basic presumption of the series--that a vicar would be allowed to interrogate prisoners and carry on most of the other work of a detective--lies here like a festering wound. In other words, this episode requires so much of the classic "suspension of disbelief" that the viewer might as well imagine that the Lord, the Devil, and Winston Churchill will make an appearance to give the episode some overall coherence and meaning. One vast disappointment in an otherwise fabulous series.

Episode 3.6
Prismark106 March 2019
Local boy Jacob Reilly thinks someone was following him. However Geordie thinks he might just have an overactive imagination.

When he later disappears believed to be abducted, Geordie enters a dark road. Jacob's dad is a torrid womaniser. When the boy's teacher Mark Davies is bought in for police questioning, Geordie beats the hell out of him. His mood darkened because of the turmoil in his family life.

Surprisingly the show sweeps police brutality under the carpet.

Sydney too is in turmoil. It is not that he does not believe in God, he does not believe in the church. Sydney would not be able to marry Amanda as she is a divorcee. He contemplates resigning as a vicar and starts to look for a flat.

There is an air of tying up loose ends for the third series. Almost as if the producers were thinking if Daniel Craig leaves the James Bond role, there goes Norton on to bigger things. The mystery though was very much second place and frankly it was a third rate one. The soap opera parts dominated this episode, even wedding bells for Mrs Maguire now her previous husband has conveniently died.
