Not bad, save for one big flaw
Jalow54729 May 2018
I just watched this movie and I kind of liked it. There were a lot of things about it that I liked a lot. That being said, this is exactly the type of movie that a lot of people will hate. I saw some reviews stating that the film was boring and didn't really go anywhere, which is true in a way. So if you're the type of person who needs lots of action or drama and a fast-paced story and doesn't enjoy interesting character development a slice-of-life type films, this probably isn't the movie for you.

This is the type of movie where we see a long, single take in which one character describes to another how to solve a Rubik's cube. It's the type of movie where the dialog is all realistic and probably improvised and yes, much of it could be described as boring. It's the type of dialog that makes you laugh, not because it's funny per se, but because it feels so very real, like a playback of a conversation you swear you had last week, word-for-word, but which you never see in movies.

This is the type of movie where, if I had the volume up too loud and my neighbors heard it, they wouldn't that think I was watching a movie, but that I was having a boring conversation with my boring friends. It's the type of movie where all the characters' names are the same as those of the actors playing them, because they're probably just playing themselves, more or less. But I like all that stuff.

I liked the story and I liked the dialog and I liked the camerawork and I liked the whole pacing of the film. I liked the length. At 73 minutes it was not too long. I always felt like more movies should be closer to that length. It seems like most of them always try to shoot for about an 85-minute-or-so minimum, even if it's not necessary.

The acting in this movie is sometimes good and sometimes pretty bad. There were a couple times when it felt like they should have done another take and tried to get it right. But the real problem with this movie was the lead actor, along with his character. He's annoying to watch. His face and his hair are unpleasant to look at. I understand that we're not necessarily supposed to sympathize with this guy or want to be his friend, but that guy just made the movie worse than it had to be. And his tiny shirts were terrible!

Worth it, unusual abnd funny
grantfiske9 May 2018
We've just watched this film and found it very creative and well made and kept one wondering how it would end. Not my lifestyle but young people would find it entertaining. How to smoke a bong for instance is something I never did. But I did make it to Amsterdam. Aaron's next stop and all on credit to be repaid sometime I hope. Funny but also sad and disturbing. Well done Mr Murray. A big talent and look forward to your next one.

An unbelievable waste of time!
njdayguy8 May 2018
I don't review movies, but this was so horrible that I have to say something. Maybe it'll save some poor soul from wasting their time. This is supposed to be a "slice of life" film, but believe me, you could be more entertained by watching paint dry!!! I gave it 1 star because I couldn't give it less. In reality, it deserves a minus amount. At the time of this writing, there are only 3 reviews, and all 3 are 10s! They had to be written by the makers of this "film". Garbage.

Boring and didn't go anywhere.
uwprof11 May 2018
It's like a Gus Van Sant movie without the interesting sound design to keep you motivated and interested. No music, no plot, just watching a boring loser of a guy go through a few days of his loser life. I'm fine with slice-of-life films, but this is just really boring.

Authentic and contemporary movie that draws you in
gystore6 May 2018
This authentic movie brings you deep into the superficial life of an aimless millennial. His irresponsible priorities and values are juxtaposed against a backdrop of the more serious and ambitious lives of those around him. I loved the funny and awkward, but realistic, dialogue between the two roommates arising from living together. It may start slowly but it builds on you, and it's worth it to stay until the end. Great production values with compelling camera angles and lighting choices.

It's A Mystery
clintstevens6 June 2018
The mystery is how did this joke of a movie ever get made? It was the longest 3 hours I've ever spent watching a film...oh wait, it was only 73 minutes. It just seemed like 3 hours. If your cup of tea is watching a slacker try and solve a Rubik's Cube puzzle, then this film is for you. That is pretty much all that happens. For those who gave this 10 stars, what planet are you from? Take my advice, do NOT watch this! Buy a Rubik's Cube...you'll have more fun.

A little movie gem!
caro-lien2 May 2018
This movie came up in my Netflix recommendations and I thought I'll give it a try - I am really glad I did! Even though it is not quite the scam/heist/crime movie that the description suggests. Instead Withdrawn is a very calm and intimate movie about the guy that went to high school with. The one that is kind of friends with everyone and very laid back, but also doesn't seem to get his life together. The one that people forget about something very random reminds them of him. And then they think: "Hey I wonder what his life looks like these days.."

I can enjoy big screen movie action but I really love when a low budget/minimalist film manages to suck you in and entertain you until the end. This movie seemed so authentic and was beautifully shot and acted out and I was really sad when it was over.

chrispost-9481117 December 2019
I was watching waiting for the movie to atleast tell somewhat of a story , instead nothing happened...Probably the worst movie I have actually forced myself to watch. I have to agree with other review.Rather watch paint dry than watch that movie.. This is the first review of any movie I have watched, just thought I had to say something...

A wonderful, slow little film
josh_flanders9 September 2018
This film is very slow, but the pace is not detracting. The pacing is the film. It is relaxing and entrancing and gives us the chance to really take a good hard look of the lives of the characters in this story.

Some may argue that there really is no plot here, no story to follow. But whoever thinks that just isn't looking hard enough. They're likely after some quick, cheap thrill, but you won't find that here. Withdrawn instead offers something far greater: an entertaining yet meaningful glimpse into the existence and routines, as well as the internal struggles and motivations, of a young man and his acquaintances, separate from any big convoluted plot.

It feels real and it feels fresh. It's all in the subtext. And best of all, it's easily available right now at the click of a button, streaming on Netflix. So what are you waiting for? Go watch it!

The 11th Greatest Film of All Time
aprilzh28 January 2020
I've watched this movie several times and it gets better with every viewing. There is so much just below the surface. I've heard it said that films aren't always meant to entertain, that instead they're meant to make us think or to teach us something. I disagree. Despite the slow pace of this film, I found it wildly entertaining, even if I derived that entertainment from being made to think. Some will say nothing happens in the film, but there is actually so much happening, so much subtext and so much going on in the mind of the lead character that's left unsaid, left for the audience to figure out. You just have to look for it, and you don't even have to look that hard. This is sheer realism like it's never been done before, though this form should be obvious in hindsight. It's subtle and complex and genius. There is a lot going on that I'm sure the filmmakers didn't even intend, which makes it even better and adds more levels to the characters. Stylistically, it borrows heavily from Stranger Than Paradise, though this one has more truth to it. It deserves to be discovered and loved by a much wider audience, but part of me hopes that never happens; it's too good for that, and I want to keep it all to myself.

Amazing
This movie is so much more than the little synopsis provided, "Short on funds, a guy hatches a plot to scam the owner of a lost credit card." That's a small portion of the big picture, which is truly about the main character and his utter slackerness. There are some scenes that feel a tad slow, but it's all to build the hilarity and pure genius of the film. I burst out laughing several times. Will watch again!

Understated Indie Gem
klutch_krusch2 March 2020
This film was recommended to me by my brother a few years ago, and we have similar tastes in movies, so I gave it a shot, but turned it off after only a few minutes as I just couldn't get into it. I found myself giving it another chance a few nights ago when I couldn't sleep so pulled this up on Netflix to fall asleep to, but I watched the whole thing... twice! Many will find this movie boring, but that's what is good about it! The film draws the viewer into the day to day monotony of our hero--err, antihero--and gives you an almost first person glimpse into the life of this awkward deadbeat Canadian slacker. True, the plot meanders, the acting is a bit sub par at times (particularly from our lead actor), it doesn't follow the traditional structure and therefore hard to predict, and our lead character has no redeeming qualities to speak of and therefore is difficult to sympathize with, but the film still succeeds despite all of these seemingly shortcomings... you don't sympathize with the guy because you're not meant to! Besides story, the sparse cinematography and interesting shot compositions, consisting of mostly static shots and long takes, were a high point that showcased the filmmakers' skill working with an ultra low budget, and was reminiscent of early Jim Jarmusch. The film is also very short, so even if you're one of those who hate it, you'll only have wasted about 70 minutes.
