Gkids has acquired North American rights to Mars Express, the French animated feature from first-timer Jérémie Perin, which was an official selection this year of both Cannes and Annecy.
The acquisition comes following Gkids’ local distribution of the film The Rabbi’s Cat, which Perin helped develop. His sci-fi noir will hit theaters in its original French language and a new English dub in 2024, following a domestic release in France this November.

The network has picked up an untitled multicamera comedy set to star Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. The project will be co-written by former Last Man Standing showrunner Kevin Hency as well as the senior of the Wayans duo.

The French market for anime has proven to be a healthy one for decades already, with many series and films getting decent releases there while English speaking territories still had to wait for years. Check how fast the French were onto Studio Ghibli, for example. You'd almost forget that the French also have their Own animation industry, one which also makes the occasional foray into adult entertainment. In 2016, a 26-episode French series called Lastman aired, based on a popular series of graphic novels (themselves heavily influenced by 80s and 90s anime, so the circle is round).
