A cute fun film
james-jones18017 January 2020
Abominable is a cute, safe playing animation. It has a good message and themes but keeps it at surface level. The animation is fluffy but there are a few beautiful visuals. The adventure is exciting without getting too harrowing and the characters are likeable enough with one or two being a tad grating. Definitely geared towards kids, but there is a bit adults can get out of it as well.

Cute Movie

Abominable Review:

Abominable is the story of three teenagers as they help a Yeti return to his family while avoiding a wealthy man and a zoologist who want it for their own needs. The trailer for this looked just adorable to me when I saw it. The story to me seemed as if it would be pretty touching and just overall enjoyable. Based on the trailer I was exactly right. I found myself enjoying Abominable. As an overall story I think it worked for most of the duration of the movie. A teenage girl, Yi, finds a Yeti on her roof and with discovering him, she finds out stuff about herself. I loved the incorporation of Yi's violin playing. The animation was actually correct on home one should play. Like in some animated movies they'll have people play instruments similar to how they're played, but not exactly. The vibrato, bow hold, and everything was correct. Later there's a cool thing with the violin where the animation was beautiful. The animation was pretty good in this. The backgrounds were simplified, sort of like a comic, and the characters had more detail, but not a lot. Some parts I think needed some work with the animation. To continue on with the story, it was still enjoyable. Predictable, but that's to be expected. Dreamworks made one of the best animated films of all time, How to Train Your Dragon. Abominable has similarities to that film and I could help but see parallels throughout. Basically what I'm saying is it's not the most original idea. I liked the family aspect of the movie. The three main characters are all related and there's just some family stuff to it that worked for me. One of the three, Peng, had a very annoying voice. It's not his fault but wow did that get annoying after a long time. Overall I think this is just an enjoyable movie. It may be because I saw this a week ago or this is all I got out of the movie, but this is a shorter review. I'd recommend this movie. I could probably see this being nominated in the awards season just because this one had messages throughout and critics did like it.

My Grade: B

Breathtakingly Beautiful

Lacked in depth and not the most original story, but scenes are masterfully crafted and absolutely stunning, to the point that you can overlook other minor flaws.

Really disappointing
LoveofLegacy29 September 2019
There were some beautiful color choices and effects, but the plot overall was super flat. The pacing was all over the place and I really felt very little connection to these characters. The trailers really made it seem like it could've been something great and it just didn't follow through.

Awhhhh!

Awhhhh, so cute. Big round (sort of) eyes; quirky smiles; a fantasy of magical powers to make beautiful flowers & the bonus to fly. But, of course there are evil corporations & scientists to watch out for. Morality message: Recognize individuality & be kind to everyone, even Yetis. Animation, modeling, surfacing, layout - all good, but not great. Basic story framework has been done many times before. A very safe iteration. English voicing good. Very good special features in DVD. A script that seemed almost as if the Chinese government censors were overseeing it for political correctness.

Cute and well animated

The yeti was a very cute and sweet creature with some interesting abilities. I liked the main characters and you get an insight in their lives. It is let down by the sheer incompetence of the villains who didn't pose much of a threat.

Breathtaking
soulofakuma8 January 2020
While the movie may need a while to get going it is even more stunning later on. Rewatching it now, the film touched me even more than it did in the cinema. Abominable tells the story of an unusual friendship between a yeti and a girl while brilliantly presenting what family actually means and what every one can do for each other. The beautiful violin pieces create such a thrilling flow which makes you wish the movie would go on forever. The scenery is a diverse illustration of China especially showing off the beautiful nature the country has to offer. The animation looks awesome and visuals get even better when you let yourself be enchanted by the wonderful things Abominable illustrates. As always, DreamWorks did a fantastic job with this movie and you won't regret watching it.

Magical and beautiful
paulclaassen8 December 2019
After animated films like 'Son of Bigfoot', 'Smallfoot', and 'Missing Link', I suppose it was inevitable to do a movie like 'Abominable'.

I really enjoyed the Yi character. She is strong-minded, and working towards fulfilling her dream. Peng is equally likable as the comic-relief character, and this is a comic-relief character I actually cared about. Jin is a very modern character teenagers will relate to. Initially, I didn't particularly like the design of the Yeti character, Everest, but he soon grew on me until I found him cute and utterly adorable.

The film takes us on a wonderful journey with beautiful scenery and great cinematography. This is an action-packed adventure that is funny, thrilling, and emotional. 'Abominable' is a wonderful and beautiful film young and old will enjoy. The animation is really great and it has a great score, too. I loved the inclusion of 'Fix You' by Coldplay, which was a very appropriate song choice. The film is magical with some really beautiful scenes. It also sends out a very positive message to be kind to animals. I loved it!

Touching and beautiful

This is a heart felt movie. I loved it. Ignore the technical criticism. Ignore the reference to political overtones. All criticism seemed superficial...perhaps they were fake. It is obviously a kids movie, but as an adult I left with good feelings. Very few movies or television shows do that for me. Children in the theater cheered at the end.

Good animated film

Warning: Spoilers
Abominable is a 2019 animated film from DreamWorks and tells the tale of a young girl and her 2 friends who befriend a yeti and must protect him from a wealthy man and an evil zoologist.

The animation is lovely and I like how you dont know who the voice actors are,as in a lot of animated film you know straight away who they are eg. Shrek,Tangled,Pocahontas,Frozen etc all have well known actors that I knew the minute the characters spoke who the actor was. If you love Big Hero 6 then check it out.

It's not bad
brookenichole-980548 April 2020
Abominable is good. It's not the best animated movie I have ever seen but it is still cute. The voice acting is great and the animation is breathtaking. The violin playing is beautiful as the movie goes on. The story can get boring at some points but the concept is great. The whole aspect of the movie was something I enjoyed. I wouldn't expect much though. It didn't blow my mind like others have. I would say watch this movie because of how stunning it is.

Bland
chijaru26 November 2019
First of all this is the first review I'm doing ever on here...and I just need to put my thoughts down because I went to see this movie for it's critic's score. I'm a sucker for animated movies, and Abominable looked really cute and heartwarming. But little did I know that I was getting no more than that. I went with a 6 year old and she laughed many times, so I guess it works for children. But for adults, if you've ever seen anything else by Dreamworks, this is very lame and bland. There isn't anything original, clever, or interesting. The creature's powers don't make sense and are just convenient, and the plot is as boring as it's execution. I really liked having an almost-all-Chinese characters, but that in itself is not why a movie should be good. Actually the best part for me were the snakes, and thought that maybe the would expand on the other special endangered species, which got me excited for a moment, but just left it at the one (adorable) example.

Great Animated Film From Pearl
swansondrew28 September 2019
As a fan of anime, this is an amazingly looking film from an Chinese company. Obviously DreamWorks distributed it, but this is an great start for the studio.

When I saw the trailer attached to the 'live-action' Dumbo remake and had no interest in seeing it. But I went to watch it with a group of friends, and we really liked it. I tend to disagree with some things my friends would say, although I will say this: it is a better looking DreamWorks film since, How To Train Your Dragon. If Pixar has gotten better with CGI, than this proves that DreamWorks can improve on their art. Whether it's made to look cartoony or realistic, this studio will still make some good material with great messages for kids. Even if some are hit and mess.

If you are Asian, or not (not being racist) this a recommendation for all.

P.S. when I say an anime, I mean it looks right out of a Miyazaki film.

East meets West
SnoopyStyle7 December 2019
Teenager Yi (Chloe Bennet) works odd jobs to save for travel across China. One night, she finds a Yeti on the roof of her apartment building. It's a mythical creature from the Himalayas who escaped from obsessed collector Mr. Burnish (Eddie Izzard) and his underling Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson). Yi and her friends, Peng and cousin Jin, name the Yeti, Everest. They help Everest escape from Burnish back to its home on top of Mount Everest.

This animated movie is a co-production between DreamWorks and the Chinese Pearl Studio. It's one of the best marriage of west and east. It has the story telling styles of the west with its animation skills plus the story elements of the new China. Yi is a classic Disney heroine. Peng and Jin are classic sidekicks. The Yeti is basically E.T. It's a rock solid animated family film. I do have a few minor issues. Not in any order, the title is a bit clunky. Abominable is a mouthful. I always liked Yeti. Yeti is a fun word and it rolls off the tongue. Second, I didn't realize that Yi's home is Shanghai. I'm no expert but I do know a few landmarks. It's helpful to give a name to her home and the start of the movie. It helps to ground the movie in more solid footing. Next, Everest's powers are nebulous. I like the explanation that he talks to nature but it is so vast that he seems to be able to do anything which makes one wonder why he doesn't do everything right from the start. My solution would be that he is too weak at the beginning due to the warmer weather. He does seem to grow his powers after getting out of Shanghai. Some of the explanation can be inferred but it would be better to be more specific. Finally, Burnish's redemption arc is a little problematic. He starts out too much like a supervillain. I think a greedy Ebenezer would work better for this character arc. Most of these are minor issues. The main takeaway is that this is a good movie.

Noteworthy, familiar take on old premise.
johnhandsome-3265830 September 2019
Abominable, directed by Jill Culton, tells the story of a young Chinese girl, YI, who discovers a mythological creature, a magical yeti, who is hiding from... well, what else, people who want the yeti for their own gain.

Now, what makes Abominable noteworthy isn't the premise or ideology behind the story. However, a female director doing a film about under represented characters, (the family is Chinese), is a nice move by Dream Works. And it's not a bad movie, either.

Dreamworks for me, is a studio who often lobs and piggybacks off of Disney. For example, Pets isn't really that interesting of a movie and what I mean is, it lacks the heart of its predecessor, Zootopia, but to it's credit Pets actually made more at the box office. (Pets 2 was actually more ambitious but made a lot less money, but that's a topic for another day).

So let's get back to Abominable... Will you enjoy it? Yes. Will your kids enjoy it? Absolutely. Will your kids be asking for the sequel? I'm not sure.

Now is it an original movie? Absolutely not... You have to go back two thousand years of similar stories before you even get to E.T. But let's not be callous... Abominable wins in that the story itself doesn't carry much pretense about being much else. It executes in story and the Yeti being adorable. (Brace yourself for Sonic).

The Yeti himself, who Yi names Everest, is nice to look at and is able to carry out his basic function of propelling its characters to where they need to go. However, unlike E.T. he lacks his own trajectory and development. His magic becomes inexplicable.... Some other characters just don't quite work, others do.

That said, there is some genuine laughter here, decent plot twists, great CGI... While I skipped Little Foot this time last year, I managed to show up this time and wasn't disappointed.

In a summer of sub par Disney, (Toy Story 4 a 7, Lion King an 8) and I won't mention the the other two... Dream Works has started the fall with a whoop.

This is such a cute, colorful movie. The animation is beautiful and the story is simple but sweet. Better than any Disney movie I have seen in a long time. Makes you what a yeti :)

The animation was beautiful, the voice acting was amazing but the story has some issues. I feel like it went to fast it's like they wanted to get it over with. Other than that the movie was good.

Funny, heart-warming and magical
blessedlaureen9 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This animation is so much better than Toy Story 4: it's heart-warming, hilarious, visually stunning, and magical. The Yeti is so adorable and he has magical powers to heal the nature, and even repair the violin! The girl protagonist, Yi, is kind hearted and loving, and she is just so so cool playing the violin on top of the building and the high mountain. Love the characters, stunning visuals, and also the values this animation is imparting to children: family, friendship, animals and nature.

Happy, colourful and full of feelings
miladed4 January 2020
I loved this movie. It was simple, straightforward, but happy and full of feelings. Like the main character Yi, I have also lost my dad recently, and so the story resonated with me a lot.

The story is relatively simple, they need help the beast get home, and it is not like such films aren't done before. But what makes it stand out more, is the happy and emotional nature of the film.

Solid 8, recommended.

Hollow
drmcwasson17 October 2019
This movie had no more substance than its admittedly appealing visuals. The story is as unoriginal as it comes. Its setting in China is transparent: no more than a coat of Chinese paint over a western culture (and an advertisement for western tourism in China).

Good kids film

Ignoring the controversy surrounding the map allowing for this to be an error rather than purposeful this was an extremely enjoyable and charming kids film with enough to keep us adults more than content and engaged throughout also. Well worth the watch.
