A SUPERB SHORT
mayyourgodgowithyou6 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate the angst that Jewish parents and their soon to be 13 year old boys have to go through when the time approaches for the formal synagogue service to allow the child to become truly one of the children of Israel. Writer and Director Alexei Slater captures in just a few minutes running time what many others with limitless assets fail to do:- enter the world of this central character with nuances and gestures from his cast and script that surely must be a prelude to future success. Tracy Ann Oberman is that Jewish mother beloved of film makers but with her performance we the viewer can truly feel her anguish. Kevin Eldon as the trying to understand family doctor is a round peg in a round hole. In his first film role Adam Bergman is a young man going places. Having myself watched the movie with an audience of 50 the only caveat I would suggest is that more could have been made of the final scene. It was over all too quickly and there was room for a couple of minutes of more Woody Alanisms. But that doesn't detract from wonderful entertainment from such a simple premise; the work of a gifted filmmaker.
