  Eshiria Portman : We've lost contact with North America's Fourth Air Force and 8th Infantry Regiment. Are there any survivors from the 3rd Infantry Division and 11th Regiment? Please respond. They're engaged in battle with the enemy's 18th mechanized battalion. They're requesting reinforcements. The 2nd and 4th Armored Divisions are in retreat. More than half of both divisions are reported to be dead or injured.

  Narration : There is no end to the reports that makes their way to the bridge.

  Richard Maxwell : How long must we wait in the shadows? Why won't they launch the Fighting Thunders?

  Narration : The man mutters in an irritated voice. The colossal enemy had suddenly appeared in the heart of North America. This is nothing like the smaller contaminated weapons of the past. During the test flight of the latest, state-of-the-art colossal airship that the army had been developing, it had been contaminated by the crystals. Not only is this a blow to the army's pride, but it is enough to threaten the army's tradition of handling everything on their own. Under normal circumstances, when a contamination occurs that cannot be handled by regular forces, a request for an attack using the Vanquish Crystal Defense V.C.D. is placed, but they have been left with the order to standby in the background.

  Eshiria Portman : Emergency contact from the army. "Immediately carry an attack by Fighting Thunder, assist the North American army, and completely destroy targeted weapons of destruction." Those are their orders.

  Narration : Finally, the attack order to rescue the lives of thousands of soldiers has been placed.

  Richard Maxwell : Fighting Thunder. Why even bother with that name. Hey, "Raiden", did you hear that? It's a little late, but hurry and make your way to the battleground. I'll transfer each of you the info. Too much blood has already been shed, but we'll do what we can to stem the flow.

  Narration : In order to speed up their attack by even a little, the ultimate anti-crystal weapons, the treasures of mankind, the Fighting Thunders, have been waiting spread out next to the warship. Like a war cry for the battle awaiting them, their red wings gleam in the sunlight. Like a requiem for the lost souls, their engines roar as they fly off into the sky.

• Richard Maxwell : It took a while, but finally we've received the attack order. We must reduce as much damage as possible. Good luck, Raiden!

  Eshiria Portman : I'm forwarding you the information. Please confirm before beginning your mission. Do you hear me, Raiden? We're still surveying the enemies so please head straight to the scene.

  Richard Maxwell : There doesn't appear to be as many enemies coming to the suburbs but you can't be negligent. Remember, shoot 'em before they shoot you.

• Eshiria Portman : [at the start of the first boss battle]  Enemy flight battleships are approaching! Good luck!

• Eshiria Portman : [after the first boss is defeated]  Check that the enemy has suspended action and fallen.

• Richard Maxwell : [upon clearing the first stage]  I can't believe that something so huge is being contaminated. But I gotta say that the mission was well accomplished!

  Eshiria Portman : Excellent job! I will check the measuring instruments so please standby at cruising speed.

• Richard Maxwell : [at the start of Stage 2]  Well, I'd like to relax over a coffee right now but it seems that's not possible. What's the report, Eshiria?

  Eshiria Portman : We have received contact from the Middle East branch. It appears to be a high crystal response within the vicinity of latitude 18 degrees North and longitude 42 degrees East, it seems to have the same energy response as the previous flight battleship.

  Richard Maxwell : In other words, there's been another annoying contamination. Unfortunately, you'll have to refuse the invitation to tonight's party.

• Eshiria Portman : There is a town around the oasis ahead of us but it appears that there has been much weapon response and it's been completely subdued.

  Richard Maxwell : Their attacks seem pretty efficient. Can it be that there's some sort of unified strategy? No, that can't be.

  Eshiria Portman : There are no SOS calls from the town. Was everyone able to evacuate?

  Richard Maxwell : Don't know. But all I know is that I have permission to attack them without hesitation.

  Eshiria Portman : Why are you always so aggressive, Captain? Is that because you're a military man?

  Richard Maxwell : Well, I'm not so sure myself. What do you think, Eshiria? You're a military woman, right?

  Eshiria Portman : You're so mean...

• Eshiria Portman : Raid the valley by proceeding without going over the cliff tops. Why have you chosen to raid them as if they were humans, Captain?

  Richard Maxwell : I won't jump to conclusions yet. But I sense that those crystals have advanced intelligence.

  Eshiria Portman : Intelligence? No way. Even if they had any, it could only be simple behavioural patterns like that of insects, right?

  Richard Maxwell : You can't rely on the words of scholars. Well, let's just be cautious for now.

• Eshiria Portman : [if the player gets through the first few scenes of Stage 2 without taking damage]  Successful entry into the ruins! Raiden is unscathed. It's perfect up to here.

• Eshiria Portman : The data analysis from Raiden is complete. Huh, what? What are these numbers?

  Richard Maxwell : What are you mumbling on about? Hurry up and report.

  Eshiria Portman : There's crystal reaction from the cave but no contamination has been detected from other than the weapons.

  Richard Maxwell : So it's a cave surrounded by crystals? Isn't that a promising cave for the future? Man, give me a break.

  Eshiria Portman : But to have contamination in a cave... What could this mean?

  Richard Maxwell : I guess the cave's being a bit shy.

• Eshiria Portman : [as the player reaches the Stage 2 boss]  A high energy response! It's deep inside!

  Richard Maxwell : Well, we'll have to ask it to come out and play.

• Eshiria Portman : [upon defeating the Stage 2 boss]  Enemy deactivated. Watch out for explosions!

  Eshiria Portman : I found a path to exit out into the sky. Please make a vertical ascent and evacuate at once.

  Richard Maxwell : Excavating for crystals, huh? I think we can assume now that they have some kind of intelligence. We'll join you after inspecting the cave, so standby.

• Richard Maxwell : [at the start of Stage 3]  Sorry for keeping you waiting. I'm heading for the Wins Shipping Port. It's a private port but it also carries out repairs and maintenance for VCD.

  Eshiria Portman : Bellwether will head later but please control and secure the surrounding airspace before heading towards the scene.

• Eshiria Portman : A transmission is coming from the council. I'm connecting you.

  Helga Lindenbaum : It's been a long time, Captain Maxwell. Why is Bellwether heading towards Wins Port?

  Richard Maxwell : Ah, Ms. Helga Lindenbaum. What a pleasure to hear from a woman who must be so busy working for the council.

  Helga Lindenbaum : Thanks for being so considerate. Although I'd be even happier if you didn't increase my workload. Why did you change the course of Bellwether? I'd also like an explanation for the SOS call to the port in the name of VCD.

  Richard Maxwell : Well, that's...

  Eshiria Portman : Captain, I've confirmed multiple contaminated weapons here at Wins Port! How could it happen at this timing?

  Richard Maxwell : This is not good. Quickly mop up the port enemies, Raiden! Well, I guess duty calls, so...

  Helga Lindenbaum : Yes, do tell me all about it when you have time later.

• Eshiria Portman : We will be entering a metropolitan area very soon. The enemy in that area are being mopped up by the 2nd and 4th panzer divisions. Please quickly pass through it and aim for the target point.

  Richard Maxwell : Hold on, this is too much for the defense corps to handle on their own. Descend and pursue the destruction of the target.

  Eshiria Portman : Captain, is that really necessary? The citizens have all been evacuated and most of the enemy weapons have been destroyed.

  Richard Maxwell : That may be so, but I'm sure the retreating people could do with a coffee break. It won't hurt to help out a little.

  Eshiria Portman : I'm getting a response on my radar. Numerous enemies have crossed the defense lines and invaded the metropolitan area.

  Richard Maxwell : You heard it. Sorry, but I'm gonna have to ask you to respond appropriately on site.

• Eshiria Portman : I'm sorry for ruining your coffee time, Captain, but there is a transmission.

  Richard Maxwell : Oh? Madam Lindenbaum from the council? I'm surprised you've already caught on.

  Eshiria Portman : It's not the council. It's from the weapons development division. I will connect you.

  Walter Erick Campbell : It's Lieutenant Campbell... Did you forget that we're at war while you're carefree with your coffee? How about paying attention to your role as the captain of Bellwether, a cutting edge aircraft carrier.

  Richard Maxwell : I apologize for worrying you. Bellwether of the weapons development division performs wonderfully. It would really be helpful if you could improve the feel of the seat and the coffee maker as well.

  Walter Erick Campbell : And... Where do you plan to go on a walk with VCD's precious aircraft carrier?

  Richard Maxwell : I'm not obliged to inform you, technical officer.

  Walter Erick Campbell : You think I'm some kind of normal technical officer? Without me, Raiden and Bellwether wouldn't be around! This whole war with the crystals depends on me! I guess it's difficult for someone like you who judges people on ranks to understand!

  Eshiria Portman : Oh, I apologize. The transmissions will be temporarily shut off since the ship will be entering a magnetic storm. I will contact you when the line recovers.

  Richard Maxwell : Lieutenant Campbell of the weapons development division, huh? I heard the name, but didn't know how annoying he would be.

• Richard Maxwell : Nothing will come by carrying away the crystals... It must have been planned since they penetrated the Bellwether and carried them away, right?

  Eshiria Portman : A transmission from an unregistered identification code came in. Captain, how should I proceed?

  Richard Maxwell : It will cut into the VCD military line so it may not be unrelated to this matter, you know? Why don't you connect to them?

  Valbarossa Hawkeye : Hmm... I am honored that the trump card of mankind has chased us this far. This is Valbarossa Hawkeye. You've heard of me, right?

  Eshiria Portman : What, VH? The pirate Valbarossa was the one who stole the crystals?

  Richard Maxwell : I heard that attacking the army has been a hobby of yours but I never knew you were a thief. Are you having trouble making a living?

  Valbarossa Hawkeye : An incompetent bastard who can't even take care of contaminated weapons is gonna treat me like a thief? Just remember that I'm getting paid a ton of money to annoy the hell out of you!

  Richard Maxwell : A ton of money? Oh, I guess you can get money for those crystals.

  Valbarossa Hawkeye : I'm giving you way too much information. You sound pretty innocent but I guess I shouldn't underestimate you. I'm in a contract and can't say much, so let's just put it this way: "The more disputes, the merrier".

  Eshiria Portman : What's this? You're involved in crystals? You've been attacking the army for the last few years but now you're looting crystals?

  Richard Maxwell : I don't know. I don't understand what a pirate would be thinking but it appears that there's somebody behind that.

• Eshiria Portman : Another external transmission this time? Ah... Captain. It's from the weapons development division.

  Walter Erick Campbell : It appears that the crystals have been taken by someone. This is an inexcusable mistake, Captain.

  Richard Maxwell : You have sharp ears as usual. We are doing all we can to recover them. If they are hard to regain, we are considering sinking the thieves and the crystals deep into the sea.

  Walter Erick Campbell : Sink? There's no way that can be allowed! Those are valuable... Well, more importantly, Bellwether's mission is not to play tag with bandits. You should leave the recovery mission to the other squadrons and prepare for battle with the contaminated weapons.

  Richard Maxwell : Unfortunately, we don't turn the other cheek. So don't listen to the rumors, Captain, and please return to your important research tasks.

  Richard Maxwell : The people doing the desk work are so carefree even though we're in a battle.

• Valbarossa Hawkeye : All right, we're ready! Be it the cherished treasure of mankind or whatever, you come at me and you're my enemy. Sorry, but we're going to destroy you!

  Eshiria Portman : It's like the strength of an army. Amazing! The army won't be able to handle VH.

  Richard Maxwell : This isn't the time to be moved. It's not the contaminated weapons but we also have to be seriously engaged. I'm sure you understand, but don't be careless, Raiden.

• Valbarossa Hawkeye : [after defeating the Stage 5 boss]  Damn, that moron said he wouldn't contaminate it, but look at this! I suspected something the moment I heard that obnoxious name "SHIFT".

  Eshiria Portman : The enemy battleship and gigantic weapons have been completely sunken.

  Richard Maxwell : You know, I would like to talk to you about various things so can you come to our ship, Sir Valbarossa?

  Valbarossa Hawkeye : [revealing herself]  You'll abide by the proper etiquette if you're going to invite a lady.

  Eshiria Portman : Wha? You're a lady, Valbarossa?

• Eshiria Portman : [at the start of Stage 6]  Raiden, can you hear me? We shall commence the attack on the enemy facility based on the information we got from V.H.

  Richard Maxwell : A facility that was supposed to be closed by the weapons development division... This is becoming a real nuisance.

  Valbarossa Hawkeye : Look, I've told you many times that I was only hired and don't know the details. But I did do my research on my client because stuff like that is important for a pirate.

  Eshiria Portman : But I can't believe that it's a weapons development facility that was supposed to be shut down.

  Richard Maxwell : There's no time for thinking. It seems they're ready for battle.

• Eshiria Portman : An incoming transmission from inside the facility. What on earth is it... I'll put you through.

  Walter Erick Campbell : What is it? There are no contaminated weapons around this area.

  Eshiria Portman : Why are you here, Lieutenant Campbell?

  Richard Maxwell : What are you doing in a facility that should have been to be torn down? It appears to be operating from what I can see but this is different from the official record, isn't it?

  Walter Erick Campbell : It was necessary to avoid the eyes of the idiots from the council, you know. They're a bunch of imbeciles who don't understand the importance of crystal energy research.

  Richard Maxwell : I see... So you are breaking the Montevideo Agreement, right?

  Walter Erick Campbell : That agreement is ridiculous. The weapons division has actually already been successful. What do you think provides the energy for Fighting Thunder and Bellwether?

  Richard Maxwell : That's an intriguing remark...

  Walter Erick Campbell : We needed to break from our bondage from the council for the future of mankind. SHIFT is an organization formed by scientists with the same ideas. You guys on the front lines know well what it would be like if Raiden weren't here during the battle with the crystals, right?

  Richard Maxwell : It would have been tough for sure but the pirate ship hired by the captain has also been contaminated. Crystals aren't something we humans can treat lightly. They're too dangerous.

  Walter Erick Campbell : I thought that the army would be more useful but you're being rash as I imagined...

• Eshiria Portman : [after defeating the Stage 6 boss]  All the weapons have been destroyed. It was definitely formidable.

  Richard Maxwell : This is an internal squabble and I'd like to make it the last one at that.

  Eshiria Portman : What will happen to Captain Campbell?

  Richard Maxwell : That's something for the council to judge. Let's just focus on the battle that awaits us.

• Eshiria Portman : [start of Stage 7]  We have entered Arduenna Silva as planned. We will head toward the Esrange Space Center after passing through the forest.

  Richard Maxwell : Go ahead, Raiden, but watch out for contaminated weapons.

  Helga Lindenbaum : You seem to have safely entered the forest.

  Richard Maxwell : I know that it's a secret mission, but can you tell me the target already? I'm just not used to carrying out a mission without knowing what the target is.

  Helga Lindenbaum : All right. I told you that we were able to retrieve a lot of information from the SHIFT facility that you guys destroyed, right? Well, it seems that any information stored on an individual crystal gets collectively shared by all the other crystals.

  Eshiria Portman : Is that really possible? How do they do that?

  Helga Lindenbaum : I've heard that even among terrestrial lifeforms, if an individual learns a new way to hunt, the same method of hunting was suddenly acquired by other individuals all around the world. This may be like the collective unconscious that Jung talked about.

  Richard Maxwell : It's hard for me to understand important things so can you explain it more in layman's terms?

  Helga Lindenbaum : Simply said, the information that comes into contact with crystals is being leaked to all the contaminated weapons.

  Richard Maxwell : I see. So they're making it as unclear as to where they're heading.

  Helga Lindenbaum : That's correct.

• Richard Maxwell : All right. Can you possibly tell us the reason for aiming for the Esrange Space Center?

  Helga Lindenbaum : Well, I'm sorry about this sudden topic, but you'll have to go to outer space.

  Richard Maxwell : I see... Excuse me, what did you just say?

  Helga Lindenbaum : I will officially relay the council mission. Both Bellwether and Fighting Thunder will head towards the planet where the crystals exist and destroy the source of the crystals flying into the earth. That's it.

  Eshiria Portman : Are we heading towards the enemy planet? How did that utterly reckless strategy come about?

  Helga Lindenbaum : Don't worry. Bellwether and Raiden were both created to be active in outer space. You learned that during the training, right?

  Eshiria Portman : That's not the problem... The sudden mission... Will we be able to come back?

  Richard Maxwell : This is the official mission to us from the council, right?

  Helga Lindenbaum : Yes... I'm sorry, Max, about asking you to do this reckless mission. It is the kind of "lousy" mission that you despise.

  Richard Maxwell : That's all right. We are soldiers. You tell us to go somewhere, and whether it is the end of the universe or otherwise, we will accomplish that mission.
