Ryan Green: Self - Fireman

Quotes

  • [Ryan the fireman looks at the steam pressure gauge, then taps Roger the driver on the shoulder to get his attention]

Ryan Green - Fireman : It's going to get noisy! Going to make a bit of noise, I'm afraid, Roger.

Roger Norfolk - Engine Driver : Oh dear.

Ryan Green - Fireman : [voiceover]  I was looking at the water level in the boiler, which is a little bit higher than I anticipated it would be at this point, so I'm just going to turn off the injector, which feeds the water into the boiler. Unfortunately, going to have to vent some steam out of the safety valves.

[shot of steam jet from safety valve, accompanied by loud hissing]

Roger Norfolk - Engine Driver : [voiceover]  Ryan's overcooked the fire a little bit here. He's put a little bit too much coal on, perhaps I haven't used as much steam as he thought I was going to use, and the safety valve flows at 220 pounds per square inch on this locomotive, and we've just got a little bit more than that, so it's blowing the steam off to atmosphere.

Ryan Green - Fireman : [voiceover]  Being a fireman, you take pride in doing the job well, but sometimes it doesn't always go to plan. Having something like the safety valves lift is a little bit embarrassing, but it's one of those things that happens from time to time, especially on an engine that you're not massively familiar with.
