- Cathy phones a hotel in a desperate attempt to find another room for the night, but doesn't have any luck. She knows that she and Stephanie can't stay now that Duane has noticed the resemblance to the kidnapped Aldrich baby. At the TV station, Carolee explains to Matt that Cathy doesn't know how to care for a baby, so she's got to go on television and tell her how to take care of Stephanie. Althea informs Dave that she's taking Penny back east with her. She wants Penny to be examined by a Dr. Rosenthal in New York, and she needs her mother. Dave wonders if Althea can devote her full attention to Penny since she has another emotional attachment, meaning John. Althea reveals that her relationship with John is over, and she has asked him to move out. Dave thinks it's a lot to take on: a broken marriage and a broken daughter. Duane returns to Cathy's apartment with a gift for the baby. He offers to get a maid to babysit for Nicky while he takes Cathy out for a steak, but she says she's uncomfortable leaving him alone with a stranger. Duane turns on the television to watch Carolee's appeal. On camera, Carolee begs Cathy to protect Stephanie. She suggests that Cathy not force Stephanie to eat cereal, because she doesn't like it. Duane notes the coincidence of Nicky crying earlier because he doesn't like cereal either. After the broadcast, Carolee wants to stay at the station in case Cathy phones the hot-line that has been set up. Duane answers Cathy's phone and talks to the Hotel Rutherford, which doesn't have a room for her. He becomes suspicious of her sudden desire to move out tonight. When Cathy runs to the kitchen to check on her dinner, Duane begins to change the crying baby and is stunned to find she's a girl.—Skip Eastport
