And another year in the books. If you count Barry Allen's first ever appearance on Arrow all the way back in 2013, this would be the 5th crossover for the DC TV Universe. And now that it's all finished, I think this very well could be my favorite. Combining almost every character these shows have ever put to screen with the incredibly talented crew behind the screen, this two night event was nearly perfect. As I said last night, these events make sitting through hours of television every week worth it. I'll be forever grateful for that.
Now that we get that emotional statement out of the way, I guess I should jump right into the unexpectedly moving death of Dr. Martin Stein. Stein has been one of the elder statesman of this universe, being a prominent part of The Flash since season 1 and of course Legends since the very beginning. One would never have expected someone like Victor Garber to even consider being a part of one of these shows, and I think I speak for everyone in saying thank you for what he has provided. In terms of the execution, I was quite impressed with how well it was handled. I don't even consider myself a big fan of Legends, but the Jax-Stein bond has been special, and it was heartbreaking to see it go down the way it did. All Stein wanted to do was go home to his family.
Stein's death gave a weight to these episodes that I certainly wasn't expecting, and in that way made it even more satisfying when the team did eventually end up on top. But taking it back a notch here, the Legends finally appeared! Ray, Nate, Amaya, and Zari swooped in to help the team (probably a little too late) but it was nonetheless a needed time. Ray's intro stopping the Reverse Flash's knife? Come on, that's straight out of a comic-book strip.
That wouldn't be the last comic-booky thing to happen as we did get several big shots of the entire cast of the crossover lined up at the Waverider and the inevitable shot of them walking down a street towards their Nazi foes. Which also brings me to the incredible long take of Ollie fighting Nazi Oliver, Barry slow-motion (really fast motion) fighting Reverse Flash, Supergirl taking on Overgirl, Alex and Sara kicking a**, Heatwave and Cold teaming up, and everything else happening at once. That is a nerd's dream and it was executed so incredibly well. Oh, and Killer Frost bringing her Amaya and Zari up to the Waverider on an ice slide? Amazing.
After all the fighting and the Nazi's were removed from existence, it was time to finally take a second and get back to those vows from Barry and Iris. Only, they needed someone who is ordained to marry them. None other than John Diggle, who has been missing for an entire two nights, helped solidify their marriage, along with Oliver and Felicity's as well. Wow, I did not see that coming. Hopefully, this won't be retconned within the next few episodes of Arrow for some god forsaken reason. This relationship has had its serious issues, but at this point, let's just see where the marriage goes. And there was something so poetic about having (essentially) the 5 people who make this universe work, all in one scene together and in that way. Like it or not, the marriages are a huge moment for the Arrowverse. We'll see how that shakes out.
As a side note, I laughed audibly and loud when Diggle puked (again) from Barry's super speed. That will never get old.
