Quotes

  • Himself - Host : you had a fascinating interview just a couple of days ago that got a lot of attention with Kellyanne Conway and many of us who have watched her and I'm trying to take politics out of this...

Himself - Guest : [politely interrupts him]  can I just say you don't have to, I mean facts and truth are not partisan

    Himself - Host : right

Himself - Guest : Republicans and Democrats, and Independents, they're just empirical facts and we want Presidents to tell the truth

Himself - Host : [after applause from the audience, nods]  here's the interesting thing: I agree when I say I want to take politics out of it which is I'm trying to think of there must be some way we can agree on something as a nation and what you brought up is there should be "this is true and this is not true," once we've gotten through it but if you look at someone like Kellyanne Conway and when your interviewing her it's called "pivoting", she "pivots, "it's like if you hold up an orange and ask her isn't this an orange? And she says "that's not the issue, we're talking about apples" and it's this way to get someone to never to say whether something is true or false. To the viewer it's "maddening," I think you did a very good job of trying to pin her down and it got to a very bizarre point where she kind of admitted it didn't she?

Himself - Guest : it was definitely odd and it was an interesting interview and to my boss's credit, he just said keep going blow out the commercials, let's just keep going with this interview, it was a day where the President said that the murder rate has been the highest it's ever been in forty-seven years and that's just not true. It's just false, the murder rate was higher in the 80's and 90's. There's no data to support what he said. But there had been other things he said, the day before he said the media doesn't cover terrorism anymore, I spent two weeks in Paris covering terrorism, two different times, so they were empirical lies that the President was telling and I was challenging her on them, she wasn't really disputing them. Then at one point she said something to the effect of "ok but those things he says that aren't true, are they more important things that he says that are true?

Himself - Host : yeah that was a moment where I really felt we went through a time warp, where she was conceding yes, he does lie but you're not paying enough attention to the things he says that are true and you felt that was a massive admission, where we crossed some weird "line," where we've never crossed before

Himself - Guest : first of all, I've never heard anyone in the administration "admit" that he'd been saying all these things that aren't true where Sean Spicer's entire career in the press room is there just to tell people that "black is white, night is day, and Trump is the best President that ever lived", and that's what the daily briefings are like but yes she conceded but it's such a bizarre formulation

Himself - Host : right, right

Himself - Guest : [impersonating Conway's formulation with other examples]  what about all the lies Nixon didn't tell?

Himself - Guest : [implying what he was thinking about at the time he was interviewing her]  what? What're you talking about?

Himself - Host : yeah, yeah

Himself - Guest : [impersonating Conway's formulation with more examples]  what about all the Presidents John Wilkes Booth didn't kill?
