As usual, the book was better but the movie adaptation was better than Hollywood blockbusters.
vshukri-8374023 September 2017
6.5 out of 10.

I read the book a few years ago and only had some minor issues and overall thought it was a decent read. That being said, there were some great things about this movie and some not so great and rather stiff and uncomfortable moments that should have been executed better.

I'll start with the things that I liked.

The length was good. Hollywood blockbuster films are rather short these days and in that we lose characterization. Although we did lose some important scenes from the book, I thought they did a good job at giving us the overall essence of the film and stayed true.

Casting for the role of Summer was spot on, although at times her excessive facial expressions and delivery of lines was a little off. Same goes for the actor who played Cole.

One thing the two actors did have together, though was chemistry.

Which brings me to another highlight of the film. The love scenes were the perfect combination of tasteful and raunchy and overall I thought it was well done. The two actors clearly have chemistry together, so nothing felt forced.

The setting for the film was spot on, although at times it was clear there was use of a green screen. Then again, this wasn't a big Hollywood blockbuster so it was understandable.

Another thing I liked was the casting for the role of Brad DeLuca. I actually thought he was the most talented in the film.

Things I had issues with:

-The casting of the role for Ben. In the book, he was one of my favorite characters, so I might be biased. Unfortunately, in the film the charisma aspect was missing from the character and he and Summer's relationship felt off and forced, which was a shame because it was amazing in the book.

-The acting for The Fortune Bottle. Obviously, we know from the book and the synopsis that the main characters are involved in making and acting in a film within a film. I understand that there had to be a distinct difference in regards to the acting of the main characters Summer and Cole vs the actors they were playing on screen in the Fortune Bottle, however, it was bad. The Fortune bottle scenes were so bad and uncomfortable, both me and the friends I watched it with visibly cringed. And given that a large portion of the film was based around them acting in the movie, it goes without saying that it ruined a good portion of my enjoyment for the movie.

  • Cocky. In the book, he had a bigger role and was used for more endearing comedic relief and character growth. Even in the trailer for the movie they made cocky out to be a major character like he was in the books and I for one was very excited about that. As strange as it seems, the rooster helped Cole's growth in the book and it's so sad that aside from a few remarks that the relationship with Cocky didn't really happen. I know it sounds silly if you haven't read the book, and you probably think I'm crazy, but it could have been so much more.

-There were a few stiff moments (the scene where Cole takes over building the fence come to mind) and a few others which didn't flow as well.

Overall, it wasn't a bad movie. The book was better. But the film was better than a lifetime movie, but NOT nearly as good as a showtime, HBO,or Netflix original series or movie.

Passionflix has some work to do and an uphill battle and I'd urge them to go for some indie romance books with real character dynamic and maybe even controversial reads to make some real gripping romance movies that will get people talking in the future. Otherwise I foresee it being a big flop.

Dragged but still cute

Emma Rigby's mumbling of the southern drawl isn't her fault since the dialect coach and director failed to teach her how to enunciate. It was a laughable attempt at a Georgian accent since she was taught a Charleston accent. Many times it's impossible to understand a word she says. That's the only negative along with the lulls and pacing. It's a cute watch though and the leads definitely have a great chemistry. The supporting cast is great too. Shot on location in Madison, GA made it authentic. Also has a key vomit scene which is 100% inspired from the Stand By Me pie eating contest scene.

Hollywood Dirt

Warning: Spoilers
I read the book Hollywood Dirt by Alessandra Torre, so of course I couldn't wait to watch the movie on the new site Passionflix. There were some things they did right and some things that were not so right in the making of this movie.

The actress playing Summer came off as more of a porn star than a simple sexy unassuming girl next door. Her facial expressions and duck face pout was off putting. The actor playing Cole had no variations in his speech, so his lines came off flat and inanimate when he was talking. Their chemistry felt forced, and it seemed they couldn't ever just kiss.

That being said, they got the feel of the town right. With just a few characters they put you in Quincy as if you were there. The actresses playing Summer and her mom looked close enough alike to appear related. The mom was a very warm and caring character.

I wish the relationship between Ben and Summer was played up a little better, and I wish Cocky received more screen time. I also think the Walmart scene was an important one for developing the relationship between Cole and Summer from sexual to romantic, so I was disappointed it was left out, but at two hours there was a lot included and I understand due to time constraints why it was left out.

Overall I felt there was a lot of over acting, but also a lot of heart . Better than a Hallmark or Lifetime movie adaptation, makes I'm hopeful for future Passionflix book to movie translations.

Really good

Okay, if you can get past the over the top, quite awfully attempted southern accents, you'll really get a great story.

I really loved the plot, and it was easy to get into.

The actors had boatloads of chemistry and bounced off each other well. I thoroughly enjoyed this and will watch again.

After reading the book and enjoying it, I thought I would watch the film. I wish I had not bothered. Very bad acting and poor accents.

It is official, this is the worst movie I've ever seen
c-doa28726 January 2021
Oh man where to begin, this movie honestly has absolutely nothing good besides the leads' looks, but the bad are countless:

1. Terrible fake Southern accent, the actress sounds like my drunk self trying to sound like I'm from Texas (I'm not even from the States nor English is my first language). I cringe each time the actress says her lines.

2. Cringe worthy scenes, not because I'm new to the romance genre, I actually read the book.

3. There is absolutely no chemistry between the two leads, simply due to terrible writing and awful acting.

4. The town looks like it's consisted of 2 houses, a church and a park. The cheap production obviously shows.

And there are more, but I need to go watch something else immediately to erase this movie from my memory asap.

First film by Passionflix
FSMeurinne29 May 2020
This movie is the first for the new Passionflix platform, they started this company to bring the best adaptations possible from the books to the screen, based on what the fans wants to see with a director that loves book, so yes this is a very good adaptation from the book, I truly enjoyed it more than the book itself and that is difficult for me to achieve. Casting was spot-on and their good work with the director showed up on screen. Keep an eye on Passionflix films.

Who the hell is Minka?
katymelba24 November 2018
This movie has all of my favorite tropes of a bad rom com. Topless hunk for no apparent reason, down on her luck but beautiful girl next door, and a sassy best friend. The acting is stilted at best, the story is at times hard to follow, but everyone is gorgeous. With all of that said, I freaking love it. I've watched it like six times now. I'm just really confused as to who Minka is. She gets a few mentions early on in the movie, and I'm not sure if it's another name for Nadia, or if there's a mysterious actress never shown who is named Minka.

What the hell did I just watch?
officialfanatirex5 February 2022
It's not just the worst book adaptation, it's the worst movie I've ever seen. The two leading actors were horrible, no chemistry between them, the erotic scenes were so cringe I barely could watch, and the woman's southern accent was the most irritating I've ever heard in a movie. The scenes made no sense after each other, the dialogues were lame and felt like a 7 year old wrote them and I think even the actors felt embarassing during shooting, because they looked like they were forced to do this movie. If you liked the book, then don't ruin the memories of it, and just ignore the fact that this movie exists.

The movie is freaking amazing. I haven't finish reading the book yet but I already watch the film so I can't really tell by now if the movie gives justice to the book butttttt I FREAKIN LOVE THE MOVIE ITSELF. The movie is so romantic and I definitely swoon over Cole's sweetness and I looooovvvveee Summer's sass and southern accent hahaha. This movie is utterly sweet and Im feeling inlove by just watching this film. The love scenes are so romantic and intimate. Love really works in mysterious and unpredictable ways and this movie is proof of it. Its definitely my favorite Passionflix movie.

Sexy and fun!
swhitewrites16 December 2017
I was so excited to find out about Passionflix and they are adapting my favorite romance books into movies! I thought Hollywood Dirt was really fun and sexier than I thought it would be. I've read the book and felt this was a pretty true adaptation. I think it's hard to create something that lives up to exactly how the readers pictured it in the book, and I think they did a good job. I hope people support the movie and the network because I'd like to see more from this network!

SO GOOD

Don't pay attention to the negative reviews. I think they are jealous. This film is so refreshing from the blood and guts violence seen on almost every other show. Have you ever been in love? You will enjoy.

Hollywood Dirt makes Georgia Hot
druatlax15 May 2022
Tosca nailed this one. All perfectly cast, all matched perfectly for sparks to fly from the hottest of chemistry between Emma Rigby and Johann Urb. Rigby is not only beautiful, but a really, really good actress. Johann is a handsome, talented, excellent actor as well. These two were believable, never doubted their characters could have existed.

A story seemingly as old as Hollywood itself, is given a new twist, with a reality that blends well with the work.

I highly recommend this movie to all adults. It contains some very hot scenes, some very enjoyable laughs, and a very real look into the world of movie making.

This is my favorite film on Passionflix. I wish it was longer, but I think it did the book justice. The acting was wonderful and the chemistry between the two leads was off the charts.
