Cymraeg Noir?

I can't believe some of the reviews here. 'Too slow'? Really? Oh well, I guess it's all a matter of taste, but I would've thought everyone would welcome such originality. Personally, I wouldn't miss a minute of it. Great script, wonderfully acted, excellent direction - oh, and a special word for the cinematographer: also outstanding. As for Eve Myles: well, she has an advantage over every other actor I know as she seems to have twice as many expressions as they do. More than that, I love the way she takes risks; the times when she starts something that leaves you hanging for a split-second, wondering if she'll be able to see it through. But she does. Every time. For me, rather special, and I hope it's not the only series.

Not your typical crime drama
M0vieL0ver28 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Keeping Faith is deeper and more complicated than your normal run of the mill drunk or dysfunctional detective stories.

Some interesting twists, and good acting.

There were some silly or unbelievable parts, but there were also some true and moving displays of the bonds between mother and child.

Enjoyable until the end. Then there was that ending...

Emotional!
helenthebanker4 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting that some have accused Eve Miles of over acting. She is playing an individual whose world is falling apart. How can this be OVER acted? If you have the emotional sensitivity of a plank and the control if a jedi master, I suppose her displays if actual emotion may seam over the top. I, personally thought she was incredible. She shows the ups and downs, the mixture of emotions involved in wanting to believe the best of her husband but finding the worst coupled with the desperation if wanting to protect her family. The storyline, but mainly Eve Myles and her the way she plays 'Faith' kept me gripped until the end. Some of the Swansea police characters were a little odd, however and felt a little like an after thought. The ending was also a bit bland after the build up, but all in all a gripping drama that I thoroughly enjoyed!

Terribly amazing

While I agree with many of the bad reviews on this site (particularly about the cheesy music, overly long panning shots, over the top acting and far fetched story lines) I have to say that this is possibly one of my favourite shows of the year for those very reasons.

I'll even find that sometimes I'll just be going about my day to day life and without realising I'll be humming the main song. This show is amazing... if taken with a bit of good humour.

Things to look out each episode: Faith taking off or putting on her heels multiple times. Faith leaving the kids with family or giving the kids to strangers. Faith going from hysterically crying to maniacally laughing in seconds. The music.

An absolute gem!
janetaylor-085809 April 2018
Utterly brilliant from start to finish. Is it the finish?!!!! I want more. Eve is just mesmerising. She is such a great actress and so original. I believed every second of her portrail of poor Mrs Howells. So very very glad she agreed to be in this role. It would have been a travesty to have lost her to another career! She was born to act. Anfmf so lovely to hear Amy Wadges gorgeous track 'Faith's song'. Cant believe its over!

TERRIBLE SOUNDTRACK

Good story. Well acted but I almost could not watch it because of the painful whining sound played.

It's compulsive, gripping, engaging viewing.

Keeping Faith is another gem of a drama to come from BBC Wales, and I'm so glad to see it's finally getting a full BBC1 transmission, as people need to see this.

The story is brilliant, and the eight part format allows it to develop, and develop it does, the middle episodes are so different to the opener, with the final two parts even more dramatic and intriguing.

The acting is fantastic throughout, with Eve Myles showing what a superb talent she is. Mark Lewis Jones, Eiry Thomas and Matthew Gravelle all impress also, in fairness the whole cast do an incredible job.

Superb production values, it looks and sounds fantastic throughout, Amy Wadge provides some superb vocals. The Welsh setting looks incredible, so picturesque.

All in all I'd say it's quite easy to follow, at no time did it being confusing or too deep, they've left plenty of questions that need answering, and I'm delighted to hear that a second series is in the pipeline.

Bravo all involved. 10/10

So slow!
patz-426012 August 2019
In intriguing drama but so slow! Infuriatingly, I watched it on IPlayer because the BBC won't do subtitles for AppleTV and iPlayer is horrible for fast forwarding. So I had to watch all the poignant (draggy?) bits and even the musical interludes (yes, it has musical interludes!) I'd advise you not to watch it unless you can easily fast forward or you have a LOT more patience than me. Sorry for the actors, they did their bit well but whoever edited it really let them down. Irritating!

Excellent
ManofClay6417 September 2018
I really enjoyed this when I watched a few months ago. I've revisited it recently and if anything have found it even better. Some have said it was slow, but I think this isn't justified. What is true is that the plot and characters are given time to develop and if one is looking for more action and less depth then this may not be for you. I'm a big fan of Hinterland (which is more dark & brooding) and there are similarities, though Keeping Faith is full of lighter we'll-observed family intimacy and the moments of madness which are natural in a busy working life with young children! I felt the way the plot is developed works well - by the end of the series one is left punch-drunk with all the twists and turns but, remarkably, I felt that it was quite believable. I hope (provided it's as good as the first) that we may hear more from Faith...?

First Season 10/Second Season 3
mark-ruddle4 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The first season was great, really interesting story and hooks you in.

The second season was annoying, a bit ridiculous and poorly played out. Switching a lead villains actress was a bad call, and if unavoidable it should have been for someone like the original.

That first season though...awesome and a must see.

Worthy of skipping if you're looking to binge-watch this series
webfoley-117 July 2021
Season one was okay , some interesting potential, well acted, but slow. It's 8 episodes that should be 6.

Season 2 and 3 are six episodes each. However, they are essentially each 30 minute episodes of content that have the same song montage every 6 minutes to stretch it out to 58 minutes. There is no real story. Think of a quiet Hallmark Movie that is requited to play the same song over the same tired visuals every 6 minutes. In the end, as each episode aired I felt less compassion for the characters and their awful and unrealistic life decisions.

People that have given this show negative feedback have clearly never been in a situation that makes common sense fly out the window.

Overacting!? The woman's life has crumbled in the space of a week. Superb acting throughout.

Great show

Great until season 3
gwilsont-7322721 May 2021
I was really enjoying this series especially after the first season. Season 2 slipped a bit and season 3 was ridiculous. Law enforcement appeared utterly moronic and the writing suffered. The third season also had a secondary story line that was unrelated to the general feel of the series and was out of place. I started with Keeping Faith and by time I watched the final episode it had become Losing Faith.

A fantastic production
paulsdpsd15 February 2018
In a world where people are looking for instant gratification and sound-bites, it is refreshing to see a production that is allowed to develop the storyline and characters and to enable the audience to want more at the end of each episode: I would use the analogy of reading a book that you don't want to put down "just one more chapter"! I appreciate that others have commented on this is as a negative, but I would strongly disagree.

The locations are stunning and the whole thing, from location through actors & production showcases Welsh creativity and television at its best.

I look forward to seeing further productions of such depth and quality.

Seriously???
gazzakazza19 September 2019
I can't believe how bad this is, all the 10 stars are obviously from Welsh people, if all the scenery spanning, the single person shots accompanied by music were taken out it could have been a 4 episode series. Storyline is laughable, with all the evidence a solicitor has collected on her husband and said nothing to the police...really!!!.....All in all it's a bad copy of Dr.Foster

Good

Warning: Spoilers
Whilst i am enjoying this drama...i knew it had to be written by a man. Some of the things Faith does are simply not what any regular woman/Wife/Mum would do! Going off in the middle of the night leaving your children alone is ridiculous. Yes her husbands missing but im sorry you just wdnt do that! And finding his disguise and fake licence...why wouldn't you tell the police (or at least someone you trust)... Dropping her kids left right and centre to go off investigating is simply not true life. You've worked put your husband has clearly got involved with bad people...so your priority would be to keep the kids safe. Going off in that car with those gangsters...really? Silly nonsense. Dramas get spoilt with silly unreal situations...maybe ask real life woman what they would do and take inspiratiion from that!

Amazing
sophiegudgeon15 February 2018
Absolutely loved this show, from the high calibre of actors and crew to the idylic setting of Laugharne, this show's wales at its best. It includes actors whom have won countless Bafta Cymru awards, and have appeared in successful shows such as Hinterland/Y Gwyll.

As I have watched this show in English and Welsh, I can see how dedicated Eve is to this role, having learnt welsh specifically for it. I was supprised to see how well her lines flowed and felt so natural, like she had known this language for years. As the show progresses through the show actors such as Aneirin Hughes (Tom Howells) who, personally made the last few episodes for me. The emotion convayed by himself was spectacular.

Writing by Matthew Hall is Whitty and Emotional, the comedy relief which is needed is delivered beautifully by Catherine Ayers who plays Lisa, which is what you need as the shocking drama unfolds.

If this show were to get a series 2, I would love for them to explore Bethan and Terry's relationship, In a lot more detail as I feel if they had time, this could have been explored in more depth and made a very interesting sub-plot.

Progressively more disappointing
cjbarrett26 December 2020
What started out as an interesting, well acted series devolved into a pretentious, overly complicated, poorly executed, tediously directed mess. By the sixth episode I was actively swearing at the television. The writing and directing choices were seemingly made for no other reason than to stretch out the story for extra time and money. Made me crazy.

Brilliant production
marilla-miles31 March 2018
I disagree with other reviewers, saying it drags on too long. It is building the characters and creating atmosphere. Eve Myles is phenomenal actress and she is beautifully directed in this breathtaking series. However, I'm surprised to note that no reviews either on IMDb or in general on the internet have picked up on the fact that her on-screen husband Evan (Bradley Freegard) is her hubby in real life!!

Worst music score EVER
barryjames-mc11 May 2018
A fairly decent drama with very good actors, ruined by some of the most horrendous incidental music I have EVER heard, like something from bad 80's dramas. The actual songs are worse, excruciatingly bad, and are ubiquitous and extremely annoying. I had to fast forward whole segments of the show just to skip these appallingly irritating songs. Who ever okayed the music is responsible for ruining a good drama. I believe that if all the awful songs were removed, you would have had, maybe a 6 episode drama that could have been enjoyed. Well written with respect to the story, great acting and fairly original. Even at the dramatic conclusion the bilious Enya like dirges return.

Great show for shoe fetishists
davidjwilletts15 March 2021
Convoluted, nonsensical, over acted by the lead. The producer must have a shoe fetish. The lead player's ridiculous behaviour with purple suede four inch heels - shoes on, shoes off, shoes on table, continual super closeups of them and the backs of her legs is a metaphor for this ridiculous self-indulgent mess of a show.

Incredible acting and cinematography
avril_rocks3718 March 2018
The series hasn't finished airing yet but it's been a pleasure to watch. One of those shows that has you questioning everyone's motive and character. The acting is top notch all round and really showcases Eve Myles as a performer. Lastly, the cinematography is outstanding. Never has Wales looked so gorgeous on a scripted tv series.

Strong story, some problems with execution
lauramiller-5915131 May 2018
This is a well-plotted thriller about a vanished spouse, with the twist that the main character has to try to figure out what happened to her missing husband while caring for three small children, one of them an infant. It does get a bit preposterous toward the end when her parental rights are challenged, but by that point the story is full of melodramatic baddies and other fun if unrealistic elements and I was all in. I stayed up late to see what happened.

As several reviewers have pointed out, the main actress has some difficulty with the part. Her performance is so exaggerated that for all her stomping and hair-swishing and outbursts, it's not always easy to figure out what Faith is really thinking. She overacts, and as a result, there is no proportion to Faith's display of emotions. Is she frightened or impatient or furious or what? All of her feelings, even the trivial ones, are turned up to 11 and so you never know what the stakes really are for her, whether she is seriously considering abandoning her loyalty to her husband or on the verge of a nervous breakdown or just in a snit.

Lastly, the music really is horrible and maudlin, with same very bad singer-songwriter tune played over and over again so that I actually began muting it until it was over. The regular, more ambient music, on the soundtrack was intrusive as well. Overall, the series is just trying too hard to amp up the emotions of dramatic situations that should be able (and I think are able) to generate those emotions organically.

Slow and way too long!!
mark-26621 May 2018
Agree with most other reviews; * Interesting story with promise which would have benefited from 4-6 eps max! * Far too many contemplative moments with the same song over and over in each episode. Appreciate using the music to create emotional depth but way overused to the point of distracting and annoying * Story became convoluted and confusing * Police became cartoon villains by the end which was unbelievable * Some of Faith's decisions were ridiculous

Overall, ok but poorly executed and way way too long!
