Melanie wears two necklaces throughout the film that are symbolic. One is the symbol for dopamine and the other is the "best" half of her best friend's necklace. Her dopamine necklace is above her friendship necklace during a later more emotional scene as she ruminates, symbolizing her inability to let go of a time where she was once happy and her best self.
The drawings on the back of Melanie's room feature butterflies flying in a shot of Melanie's stomach and "physiognomy" drawings detailing the eyes, nose, and mouth: common traits that signify status and used to be indicative of one's treatment in society in the late 19th century.
All of the drawings are all hand drawn, original pieces by the young lead actress who plays Melanie, Carlotta Summers.
Each lead character has a corresponding butterfly and color to go along with that butterfly. Melanie is the yellow Colias Alexandra butterfly, a species that doesn't sequester toxins and is easily eaten by its prey. Paris is the Morpho Peleides butterfly whose wings are a bright iridescent blue and is the only butterfly of her class whose wings are bigger then that of the male. Charlotte is the Greta Oto or "Glasswinged" butterfly, who easily adapts into it's surroundings. Katrina is a bright red and brown, like the Vanessa Atlanta aka "Red Admiral" butterfly, whose name is after a figure in Greek mythology, a strong yet feminine woman who faces obstacles and backlash for refusing to follow gender norms.
